Pittsburgh Steelers @ Washington Redskins

Saturday, August 22nd, 7:30PM

Fedex Field

Weather: 2PM-5PM (70% chance rain - 84 degrees)
8PM-11PM (50% chance rain - 75 degrees)

Not expected to play: Ben Roethlisberger, Mike Williams

What I am watching for:

1.) ANYONE on offense to make a play. Seriously. I'm tired of reading and seeing who looks good in practice. It's time for one of the red shirt WRs to make a play....and I mean 30+ yard play and/or TD.

2.) 1st defense vs Charlie Batch: WIth Big Ben sitting out, I expect Charlie Batch to spend more time on his back than Paris Hilton.

3.) 3 and outs. I want to see the Redskins outnumber the Steelers in this 2-1.

Of course consistent O-line protection and same flashes from the back up RBs will be nice. What will you be looking for?

Sugar and I are on our way to Fedex Field shortly. We'll be online then and will be able to contribute some sights and sounds from the parking lot.

Being a Skins fan living in PA I...

grow tired of constantly hearing how great the Steelers/Pens are. So a domination of said team from kickoff to close would be fantastic.

If Big Ben is out, then I demand a great day for our defense. I will not stand for another day where a QB like Troy Smith from the Ravens is made to look like he belongs on the all-Madden team. Justin Tryon better play like his job is on the line because if there’s another preformance like last week he should be cut, to make a statement at the least.

If Campbell gets time in the pocket then I also demand acurate passes and would like to see him get in a WR’s grill should they run a wrong route or something.

Not so much this game but for the rest of the season: Laron Landry needs to become a playmaker. He hasn’t lived up to his draft potential at all and needs to do something otherwise he’ll just be that guy that Brandon Jacobs trucked last year.

I'm worried about the beer supply. After this case, and the other case, there's only one case left- Barney Gumble

Laron was injured much of last year.

Like Blache said, he really came through towards the end of the season and I think he’ll be a force for us this season.

Offense

I want to see a few plays early on where the skins ACTUALLY stretch the field.
That would tell us:
a) is our O-line making progress? If we can match up against the Steelers D, we can match up against anyone
2) can we do things to open the West Coast O up, rather than watching us run 7 yard ins with 8-9 yrds to go
3) we can sustain drives and keep defenses honest to open the running game
4) a lack of complacency on behalf of Zorn, and a sense of urgency to get this thing clicking…

On D:
Not worried about pass rush —at all.
Want to see Tryon step it up and make a few plays, as well as Barnes….

by MLHOYA on Aug 22, 2009 3:01 PM EDT reply actions

I want to see

some downfield passing. Protection or no, we’ve gotta find a way to take some shots. I understand not showing all your cards, but you at least need to show you belong at the table.

On defense, I want to see our players WALK off the field. I am full bore into this ‘D’. They could allow 1000 yards/game in the preseason, and I will keep the faith. Until they show me that they can’t get it done when the bullets are real, I will believe in them. Sure, I’d like to see Tryon redeem himself. And some of the young linebackers as well. But I already know B-Rak is the real deal, and I know what Big Al can do, so I just want them to stay healthy.

Ok, didn't punch it in, but WOW

Just an outstanding first drive… but I guarentee JC wants that first pass attempt of the drive to try again.

And of course, now no team will be able to cheat on us in punting, since we picked up 15 yards on that fake punt.

Let’s see, that drive got us 62 yards, 3 points, and we picked up first downs every time except the fake punt and the final field goal…. against the #1 D. 7 minutes… just awesome

by BillWard on Aug 22, 2009 7:53 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Feels good. Now let’s get back on the right side of the refs and end these stupid penalties. The call against DHall was just terrible. But them’s the rules.

So I guess Haynesworth really is worth the $100M, since he’s making everyone else MUCH better.

Kept the D honest; looked better than his stats, though

Certainly didn’t look good in the stats block, 1 for 7, 10 yards. Two of those were the two very deep throws, and that kept the D off the line a bit, opening up the run.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Aug 22, 2009 9:26 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Zorn was a bizzarre pick for HC

I couldn’t believe it last year (and you quoted me on that, though you didn’t realize it… something about most ? in a headline or something, I was at the (now defunct) Redskin Report). He might have been a very good OC for a D minded coach, but it’s too much for him to be the HC, QB Coach, and OC.

by BillWard on Aug 22, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope, DEMOTE

Still think he would be a fine OC and QB coach… just needs someone higher to take some of the load off his shoulders. He’s not a HC, but OC…. maybe.

by BillWard on Aug 22, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

You can agree that wouldn't happen

No HC let alone human being would allow that to happen.

by ReggieBullits on Aug 22, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

But it would still be best for both the team and JZ. Especially if they bought in a certain currently retired coach who has a particularly strong relationship with Zorn as the new HC……

Ok, so you have to keep Marko and you need to find a way to keep Marcus.

How do you do it? With neither playing ST, how do you justify keeping both?

You know, he might have better hands than Carlos "Hands of Stone" Rogers....

But Rogers definitely would do a better job of getting in position to at least be cursed at for not making the play on the ball…

by BillWard on Aug 22, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Easy

Marko as the 5th WR, and Marcus a the SECOND RB. I’d take Mason over Betts any day. He’s a much better runner, faster, with superior vision. And don’t talk to me about pass protection, cuz Betts sucks there too. Besides, with a backup RB who can actually produce positive yards on 1st or 2nd down, you could have Portis play more 3rd downs. CP is the bast blocking back in the league.

by CJHutch on Aug 23, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

And now Dorsey is running like a Freight train.

But he’s got a rep for putting the ball on the ground.

by BillWard on Aug 22, 2009 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

And I think we've just found our third string QB.

CHASE is the man.

Since Colt seems to be Colorblind in the Redzone.

by BillWard on Aug 22, 2009 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

Takeaways----

1) Colt Brennan is gone.
2) We need to keep both Marcus Mason and Marko Mitchell
3) Orakpo is a BEAST.
4) Haynesworth is worth the money… the Defensive line and linebackers just look so much better when he’s in, he elevates everyone around him.
5) Special Teams SUCK…. again.
6) Todd is a fine #2 QB…. but please, lord, somehow keep Jason healthy and help him get sharper.
7) Fred Davis is officially embarrassed/POed…. and that’s a good thing, he played much better tonight.
8) We don’t need any more injuries… get well quick Betts and Sellers.
9) We can play with anyone when we play well. Conversely, we can lose to anyone when we don’t.
10) The D will ultimately be very, very good.
11) The O may ultimately be very, very mediocre.
12) We can no longer say “Great Fans” and “Washington” in the same sentence without “doesn’t have” being somewhere in there… even if this is a preseason game, it’s pitiful that the stadium was rocking for the Steelers and quiet for us. What homefield advantage? Where’s the stadium rocking and rolling like old RFK?
13) Zorn was too cautious with the first team offense, but was better in play calling as the game went on… that may be a GOOD sign of things to come, as JG the Great was famous for his half time adjustments, which won MANY games for us.
14) Jarmon needs to stop being nervous… when he did, he started taking over the game late.
15) Tryon, I’m sorry to say, sucks. There’s still room for him on the team, but ONLY if he plays Teams. He may still make the team this year (not that he’s necessarily earned it….)…. but if he’s not a world better there’s no way he makes the team next year.
16) While we aren’t getting enough sacks, yet, we are really putting pressure on the QB… once Jarmon and Rak get fully “veteraned” we should have a BEAST of a line with Haynesworth pushing up the middle.

by BillWard on Aug 22, 2009 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

I doubt they take Chase over Colt

Colt was a 5th round draft pick and the franchise will try to safe face, regardless of who is the better QB. Besides, they’re fighting for the third string quarterback position, not the QB of the future. who gives a shit about who is better? If JC and Todd go down, our season is over with anyway.

true

besides, no one is going to be overly interested in trying to steal chase off of our practice squad. we can keep him there, and if JC goes down for the season (God forbid) or one of our backups starts looking real shaky, then we have the luxury of bringing him up. in the end, no real reason to worry about it. like you said, it’s the third-string QB we’re talking about

10) The D will ultimately be very, very good.
11) The O may ultimately be very, very mediocre.

hmm...

about colt… i’m pretty sure that now, the colt fans are gonna be quiet after seeing what happened tonight. and me personally, am not really a colt fan, but i think that he at least deserves some credit for what he did tonight. he was only able to lead 1 drive, but besides the fact he was intercepted on it, he led the drive about 60 yards or so.
and i know, i know, both of these past 2 preseason games were bad, but i think we should give colt one last shot before we go crazy and calling for chase daniels as 2nd/3rd string QB.
and plus, just like colt brennan last year, he was pretty impressive. and daniels was pretty impressive tonight, let’s not get over excited about him “just yet”….

and yes, marcus and mitchell needs to stay. and fred is finally getting the hand of the game :D

whether it’s colt or chase, one of the best things to come out of this pre season will hopefully be the silencing of the Colt masses.
