Open Thread: Redskins @ Ravens

via frmarkdwhite.files.wordpress.com

Continung the fun from last year, we'll be live commenting from this thread for tonight's action just before game-time. OverlordMarshall, I sincerely hope you can make this chat thread (no censorship)...it will make for a good time.

Game Time: 7:30PM EST
TV: NBC-4/Comcast HD (Mike Patrick, Joe Theismann, Kelli Johnson, and Lindsay Czarniak)
Radio: ESPN Radio WTEM 980 AM (full radio list) - Larry Michael, Sonny Jurgensen, Sam Huff, and Doc Walker (sidelines)

Thoughts:

This is the perfect game for the Redskins to have a pre-season game against. They'll face a tier-1 defense for a few series, and the Skins defense will get to see multiple types of QBs: Flacco (strong QB with size) and Troy Smith (small QB with lots of quickness and mobility). Flacco has struggled in camp thus far with accuracy, and he won't be getting much help since the WRs he is throwing to are mostly inexperienced: Demetrius Williams, Marcus Smith, Kelley Washington, Yamon Figurs, Eron Riley, Thomas White, Biren Ealy, Justin Harper, and Ernie Wheelwright

I predict a sloppy game for the Ravens offense with some ferocious hits from the Skins defense, specifically Kareem Moore. Jeremy Jarmon I also expect will stand out with a sack or two. As for the Redskins offensive line, I expect to laugh a few times tonight. They're still a work in progress and now they will be facing players they haven't seen before. Add in the crowd noise and that puts the false starts over/under at 3.5.

A win tonight is zero injuries.

wrong, think about your team after tonight’s performance.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

it's pre-season dude...

doesn’t mean squat. Open the windows in your trailer when you’re painting the walls…especially in this heat. Fumes can be vicious.

Trailer?

Lol. I live on a golf course at home and an apartment at school. If you are basing that off my picture and the trailer in the background, I was on a fishing trip and that is right next to the dock.

Trailer, lol. You are too funny.

i was just playing

at the Ravens game last year I must have screamed “go back to Dundalk” at least 15×...that and “it must be convenient that you can drive your house to the games.”

Now Dundalk

That is the largest trailer park in the world for sure. How do they say it, “Dundock”?

Cool Big W for the Ravens!

I just think you are in for a rough year. You have no offensive weapons that scare anyone and I don’t think your defense is going to be as good as it usually is.

I think it would of been a different story tonight if A) it was regular season and B) we had played Portis, Haynesworth, Rogers (Remember those guys?)

by Parks Smith on Aug 14, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Yup

We have no offensive weapons. Just 3 RB’s that got us to the 4th best rushing attack in the league last year. We also have the same group of WR that has taken us to 13-3 and 11-5 with an appearence in the AFCC last year.

No weapons, you are 100% right mr Randel el. Lol, talk about not weapons, look at your group!

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

I wanted to bring this up in a previous post but I was a little late to the game...

Does anyone think picking Orakpo over Michael Oher was a mistake? I love the kid and I have no doubt he’ll this season and for many seasons to come but doesn’t the offensive line have more positional value in a draft than an outside linebacker? If anything I would have loved to see them trade into the late teens and pick up both players but I guess they wanted to leave their options open for next year in case JC doesn’t play as expected. I’m also convinced that Shawne Merriman will be a redskins next year without a salary cap so that makes me wish we had bolstered the o-line more this year.

My brain says your right, but my heart says Orakpo.

by Parks Smith on Aug 13, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...

When Oher becomes a free agent, then the Skins can acquire overpay for him then.

by Roastbeef on Aug 13, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I think adding someone like Orakpo to take advantage of Haynesworth being double teamed was mandatory. I like Carter, but he is 30 now so he could be slowing down. I don’t see anyone else that will supply a sick pass rush without drafting him. As for our RT issue, I suspect they will sign someone to compete for the job or supply some depth. Levi Jones is out there.

by liger99 on Aug 13, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't agree with any of it.

Orakpo was considered top 5 talent in the draft. He’s a monster with a full trophy case to prove it.
No way were both players going to be there in the late teens.
Shawne’s not going anywhere; he’s a fan favorite, brings in revenue, and is the key producer in their defense.

by SSBlitz on Aug 13, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m interested to see how Shawne comes back from injury and post steriods.

by Parks Smith on Aug 13, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I do think

Merriman will end up back in San Diego. But if it comes down to him or Rivers, Shawne is out. And why does everyone think Orakpo will stay at LB? As I said in another post, I heard an interview with Blache yesterday where he said Orakpo needs to learn how to play the run in the NFC East before he lines up at DE full time. I think they’re putting him at SLB just to make sure he gets on the field, while staying with Blache’s mandate of stopping the run first and foremost.

As for Oher, he is playing RT for Baltimore. And that’s where a lot of people had him projected. He may have been a good pick up at 13 if BO wasn’t there, but we got a top 5 talent and probably the best pass rusher in the draft at 13. I would have been sick to my stomach if we had passed that up.

by CJHutch on Aug 13, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

funny

Shawne’s not going anywhere; he’s a fan favorite, brings in revenue, and is the key producer in their defense.

You could have made the same statement about Lavar before we dumped him.

by CJHutch on Aug 13, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I think a lot of people forget that he hasn’t played in a year. No one really knows how good he is going to be.

by Parks Smith on Aug 13, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

However

We do know that the Chargers D took a serious step back last season. They NEED Merriman.

RAK EM UP!

by VA_Skin on Aug 13, 2009 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

RT and DE were both positions of great need

Orapko might be getting reps at OLB now but he was the best 4-3 DE in the draft and nothing has happened since traning camp to change that. Would I have burnt all my skins jerseys if they drafted Oher? Heck no, but I don’t think we should question the FO when they are finally realizing they need to stockpile young talent on both lines. In my mind it’s arguable that DE was an even bigger position of need than RT just cuz we’re relying on Carter(not much of a threat most of his skins career), Daniels( who is always hurt), and Wynn(who isn’t much). I wouldn’t argue it that hard but I’m just glad we are focusing on the line and I don’t think Haynesworth would be as effective without good players around him. Plus in my mind there are guys like Oher and Joe Staley available at the end of the first round every year but not guys like Orapko.

Find a bar with directTv that has the NFL ticket

I’m pretty sure it carries all the pre-season games too. I’d call ahead and make sure.

by Roastbeef on Aug 13, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

If a bar has DirecTV/satellite

They should have an east coast Comcast feed, right? It is worth a call to a sports bar in your hood. I know Comcast has some rights but not sure about broadcasting live nationally.

by Ken Meringolo on Aug 13, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

DirecTV does offer regional sports channel packages but they’re separate from the Sunday Ticket so there’s no relationship between the two. Definitely worth a call.

I’m getting giddy over here. Redskins football AND a reason to drink beers at 4:30 (pacific). Excellent.

Not sure where in CA you are, but if you’re near Venice beach, there is a Redskin’s bar. Go to Joxer Daly. Its near the intersection of Washington and Venice. Some cool dudes there too.

I know I read about it somewhere...

But can someone please explain to me why Comcast got the HD rights? NBC HD channel is not in HD. I love how everything is for sale.

Yeah, there you go TV Director!

You can have the interview as a voice over instead of using the split screen with the furthest camera angle possible of the action on the field.

I love how the Vick highlights don’t have a single pass in them.

If you're in prison for two years.

You have nothing to do other than work out. I don’t see a big dropoff in Vick’s athletic ability.

Peyton Manning

said that Vick won’t be able to jump right back in. He’ll be like a rookie again. Getting use to the speed of the game, taking hits, etc.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Aug 13, 2009 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe at a starting QB position.

He’ll still be good in a Wildcat formation though.

by SSBlitz on Aug 13, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

I’m sure running away from the Shawshank rapists is a good work out, but it’s probably nothing like an NFL game.

He still has 4 seasons worth of experience.

Running against the nfl. This is like an extra-long, workout-focused, off season for him.

I can't watch the game

but looking online… Is Marcus Mason playing some defense? Because he’s got two tackles… Explanation? Position? Or, should I just say… HUH?

Not so sure

I’m watching the NFL gamecast… First of all, I’m almost positive that those tackle stats are only defensive tackles. Second, on that Beck deep pass that got called back for holding, Mason was the tackler on the play… Like I said, I can’t watch it here in New Orleans… But it seems to me that they’re putting him in on D. Probably not a big deal though.

Good... Although I could see it now

A punter for a bad team calls his agent after game 6 of the regular season:
“But Jimmy, I have to punt soooo much!! Do they think I’m some kind of machine? I think I had to punt the ball nine times yesterday! And they made me hold for a field goal once. Why can’t they get me a backup? The quarterback has a backup, and I’m like the quarterback of special teams, right? … Right? Jimmy, answer me!!”

by BayAreaBullet on Aug 14, 2009 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

True but...

Right, but why do all the teams that are actually good look like it in preseason. Somehow the Ravens could at least get out of their own way and look fairly good even with their backups – I guess that is what depth looks like. Its just hard to get happy after that display. Very very few bright spots.

by skins76 on Aug 14, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Listening to the interviews with Blache, it seemed like he wasn’t calling plays or making assignments to win a game, he was doing it to test his young players.

I don’t think he’d put Tryon one-on-one so many times in a row during a normal game (ever at this point) after he got burned so many times. Same with Barnes.

I’m not happy with it at all, I think that our depth right now is filler or extreme raw talent that needs experience. The Redskins called the game like an experiment, the Ravens played it like a team trying move the ball.

I’m not going to get worried unless they look like this a game or two into the season…It would be nice to see some polish before the season starts, for sure, but I’m going to temper my preseason expectations with an understanding that this is still the preseason.

by snowburnt on Aug 14, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Zorn press conference

500 total yards vs Skins 196. wow….abysmal.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Aug 13, 2009 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

I like this statement guys
I predict a sloppy game for the Ravens offense with some ferocious hits from the Skins defense

You were so close to holding us under 500 total yards and you were so close to getting 200 total yards. Maybe next year….

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

ty for your insight

mr hindsight.

by piratedan7 on Aug 14, 2009 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

First off

I never predicted anything for the Skins offense…so the 200 yards comment doesn’t apply. The Skins defense actually did lay some nice hits…and if it wasnt for the 15 blatant holds the Ravens offense commited (half of which were called), who knows what would have happened. I’m not saying the refs were a factor in the loss…I’m just saying they completely sucked over all. Receivers were catching balls with one foot out of bounds, missed calls…pathetic refeering on both sides.

As for the Ravens offense, the Skins D held them to field goals the early part of the game…Troy Smith played A LOT more than I thought he would. Beck still threw for over 100 yards, was embarrassing in itself.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Aug 14, 2009 2:23 AM EDT up reply actions

didn’t get many penalties against them…that said they couldn’t stop the ravens O that was stopping themselves.
