Vinny Cerrato: Punt Returner Position Wide Open

Frank Hanrahan just dropped a tweet that Cerrato said the PR position is wide open. Looks like Randle-El's days are done, which he can't be that upset about. DeAngelo Hall was on the Sports Reporters yesterday:

When we go down to Atlanta, I've already made my request to touch the ball then. If they choose to put me out there any other time then that's on them. But I'm BEGGING to touch the ball November 8th.

I think Hall should be returning all punts except in the red zone, which Randle-El could continue to do given his good hands. As for the kickoff, if one of the scrappy guys such as Alridge or Dorsey makes the team, he should get it. Otherwise, continue with Rock. Thoughts?

The Speedsters

AA and Dorsey. I personally wouldn’t mind seeing DeAngelo (that’s who i voted for), but I worry about putting our starting CB out there, so Alridge or Dorsey would do as well

Great quote.

I really like Hall’s attitude. Fits right in with the rest of the Skins.

ARE shouldn't even be a choice

Devin Thomas seems the obvious choice to me. Moss & Hall are too valuable, IMO.

Thomas has the talent, and did it in college. Seems like a no-brainer.

I voted Moss

but that’s only because you asked who I would like to see returning punts. I know, though, that that’s not actually going to happen, and I know it’s too much of a risk. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to see it happen, though.

Also, if Hall wants his hands on the ball in Atlanta, he knows his best chance of doing that is to get that pick 6. Don’t worry about getting the coaches to let you return a punt. Just go out there on Atlanta’s first offensive series and embarrass Matt Ryan and your former team.

Constant passenger of the Jason Campbell Bandwagon since 2007. Keep on driving, brother.

RAK EM UP!

I like the idea of mixing it up right now

until someone steps up and clearly outshines the competition. AA (or Dorsey) might be able to do both. PR is a lot more dangerous than KR as far as turnovers go. I agree with this:

I think Hall should be returning all punts except in the red zone, which Randle-El could continue to do given his good hands.
Maybe sprinkle in a little Moss and Alridge, too.

I think we still see ARE taking the punt returns unless Dorsey or Alridge step up. Moss and Hall could be used when we need a big play or are in a tight contest. If we are ahead and playing a ball control game (like we did in the first half of last year), then ARE is a safe choice to send out there. Thomas had 8 punt returns in college, so I’m a little unsure about sending him out there for punts, but I would love to see his speed on kick returns. Did we use a two deep formation on kickoffs last year? Seems like Rock returned the kickoff every time. Anyhow, Thomas/DD/AA on one side and Rock on the other for kickoffs this year. We were 4th in kr avg last year, so I don’t see us messing with that too much even with the new wedge rule.

Unfortunately, I agree

I hope the reason for ARE getting more punt returns though is that he will have little responsibility in the passing game because Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly are knocking it out of the park.
