Could Colt Brennan be the future?
Hey guys, just visiting from Bleeding Green Nation. I saw this article on profootballtalk and I was just curious how you guys felt about him. I was stationed in Hawaii in the Navy and love UH football. June Jones ran a crazy pass only offense that even made Timmy Chang look fantastic, but if you ever got the chance to see Colt play in college....I don't know, there just seemed to be something about the guy...kinda Joe Montana-esque.
I thought you guys STOLE him in the 6th round. Now I'll admit, I'm a bit of a homer and I was pretty high on Timmy Chang when the Eagles picked him up, but I knew he wasn't going anywhere, the kid just couldn't take a hit. I think the skins really have something in this kid. What do you guys think? If Campbell flops, would you be cool with giving Brennan a chance? Here are his college stats:
| 2005 | 350 | 515 | 4301 | 68.0 | 8.35 | 87 | 35 | 13 | 35 | 155.49 |
| 2006 | 406 | 559 | 5549 | 72.6 | 9.93 | 79 | 58 | 12 | 26 | 185.96 |
| 2007 | 359 | 510 | 4343 | 70.4 | 8.52 | 67 | 38 | 17 | 28 | 159.85 |
Just wondering.

Colt Brennan
is a very polarizing player in Redskins nation. On one side, we have the JC haters who have already formed the Cult of Colt and believe that there should be an open competition at QB in this year’s training camp. Then, we have the other extreme of doom & gloom pessimists who have already declared Colt a bust before he has even stepped on the field in a real live regular season game.
First, I would like to see Colt win the backup QB competition. If he can beat out Todd Collins, then that will show that he has impressed Zorn enough to be our starter, should JC get injured. Then, I think we should play at least 1 preseason game where JC is the starter and Devin Thomas/Malcolm Kelly are our #1/#2 WRs. And another preseason game where Colt is the starting QB and Moss/ARE or Moss/Thomas/Kelly are the starting WRs. Colt has really impressed in OTAs, training camp, general practices, and preseason against 2nd and 3rd string defenses. Now, we need to see what he can do against the faster, more experienced starting defenses.

Campbell has to prove
he can make the team better with him…if he flubs in camp..he could be gone for good..and you might get your wish..I really feel the tarp will come off the Offense and they will be out for blood this preseason from the git-go

I am tired
of hearing how many offenses Campbell has been in. You can either play or you can’t. Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan – the came out of college to play in totally new offenses and thrived. Now, all that said, I do still hold some faith in what Campbell can do. The flashed are there. Do I think he will ever be a Pro Bowl QB? No. But not every team can have a pro bowler. If anything, this fanbase should know how possible it is to win without a great QB. Theisman was the most talented of our SB winners, and he was on the team 4 years before becoming the starter.
I think Campbell is the type who can get it done as long as all the pieces are around him. That’s not a knock. There are plenty of very good to great QB’s you can say the same about, like Troy Aikman. On the flip side, you could have a Donovan McNabb dilemna – a QB with terrific skills who’s rarely had the right complements, and is forced to make something out of nothing. Basically, I think that this is the year for the receiving corps to prove that they’re more than a one man show. If that happens, I think JC’s numbers skyrocket. If not, you have to put someone in there who can pull a good result from a bad play. And Yes, I personally think Colt will be capable of that at some point.

flacco and matt ryan didn’t have to do much last year
both teams just ran ran ran ran ran, 9 men in box, play action pass
the system they played in was limited and made specifically for them so they didn’t have to do much since it was their rookie season
I agree though, campbell can do it for us with the right pieces

that's
an easy argument to make, and I agree with it for the most part. But I watched Flacco some, and the kid has it. Sure, he wasn’t asked to do too much, but neither were the 99 other QB’s the Ravens have had in there. And, neither was Roethlisberger his first year or two. That’s who I envision Flacco being like – Big Ben. He’s not going to win too many games on his own, but if you give him a legit supporting cast, he’ll take you places. Kind of like Campbell.

Campbell vs. Colt
I just outright don’t like Campbell. He has no balls. He might have character and and be polite to the media and get slapped around by our management without blowing up but he just isn’t a QB. He doesn’t make big throws, he doesn’t try to win games, he doesn’t try to sustain drives. When he’s out there, I don’t know what the hell he’s really trying to get done. Usually its not throwing an interception which is the only thing he excels at.
Doesn’t matter if it’s 3rd and 15 4th and 12 to go, he doesn’t even look at our down the field receivers he just lofts it out to ladell betts who comes up 5 yards short everytime.
Colt is the opposite of Campbell which is why he is so intriguing to anyone who watched him in the preaseason. He has all teh qualities that Campbell lacks. However, Colt may be the future but for now Campbell is our starter and should have a solid season. Of course it will include way too many checkdowns on 3rd and long but I still think we have an overall talented enough team that campbell can get the job done.

I hate to
get into this argument, because I like Colt alot, and I’m not sold on Campbell either. But I don’t buy what you’re saying. We don’t know if Campbell wasn’t throwing downfield because he chose not to, or because that’s the play the coaches called. In fact, I remember him audibling when the comms went down, and the play ended up being a touchdown. To Thrash maybe? And watch the New Orleans game last year. That play where he ducked the defender, stepped up in the pocket, then heaved it to Santana for a TD was Sportscenter material. Now, as far as him having “no balls” – I disagree with this as well. Jeff George had no balls. Brunell lost his his last year and a half. I’ve seen JC run headfirst up the middle for 10-15 yards too many times to say he has no balls.
Now, all that said, do I think Campbell is a sure thing? Not by a longshot. But I think he’s our best option right now. Remember, Zorn’s no married to him. I don’t foresee any problems from management if he were to put in Colt. But with Colt you don’t really know what you have. Sure, he’s looked good in preseason. But so did Cary Conklin. And Danny Woeful for that matter. Personally I think Colt will be very good. But I’m willing to wait for him to get there, rather than throw him into the fire before he’s ready.

You should also note that while not throwing the ball downfield as often as most would like, Jason Campbell set a franchise record (on one of the longest running franchises in sports) for passes without an interception last year.
It’s easy to knock on him for the things he did wrong (not enough deep balls, overthrowing some deep routes, getting sacked), but he also did a lot right. If you look at those three complaints, they are all things that improve with consistency in an offense.

Did
Campbell single-handedly lose games for us last season?? Nope. Those losses were a team effort… so until Brenna can prove that he is no longer a “colt” but A “STALLION”- I’m stickin’ by my guns for campbell!!
I would hate to see us trying to fix something that really isn’t broke… I’m a Redskins fan and want to see this TEAM win as a TEAM— and throwing colt out there will not accomplish much for this team (yet). If Jason falters (which is highly doubtful), then yeah throw this guy to the wolves and see if he will actually fight as an elite QB… but until that day, I stand firm in saying Campbell is much more qualified to be the team’s QB, unquestioned right now.
Now if Foal Brennan can convert to an outstanding reciever, I think he should start- otherwise, I think his spot is on the bench for now.

First of all, Jason Campbell is a good quarterback and might one day develop into a really good quarterback. He is big, accurate and generally has a feel for the game. However, one important thing he does not do is have that drive to move the chain on third down. Too often on say a 3rd and four, he forces a bad pass where he most likely would made a first down had he run for it. Oh how many drives I saw stalled this way from inside the opponents 45 to 35 yard line!
Having said that, it is really hard to evaluate him solely because the Redskins offensive line absolutely suck at pass protection. They can’t hold a pocket for receivers to get open deep. And say what you will about our receivers, any one will get open given enough time.
Colt looks good but we have to see him play with and against first stringers. But he will still suffer behind that lousy line. Here is to suffering through another 8-8 season (+/- 3 games)…cheers!

I don't know how much I'd argue for the QB to run.
Especially based on the three inch hole on a TV screen from a broadcast perspective.
Against defenders running 4.4’s and hitting like a freight train, I’d rather Campbell check down or toss it out.

Colt can do it!!! :)
It is widely known that Campbell had to learn a number of different offenses in consecutive years (4?), however I think that what many don’t realize is that Colt had to learn 3 different offenses in his college career (Colorado’s, Saddleback’s, and Hawaii’s offenses) and he learned them quickly. In fact, in his first year at Hawaii, he beat out QBs that had been around the system longer (Tyler Granke had redshirted the previous year to get a better understanding of the run and shoot.) The run and shoot is not the easiest system to learn (as shown by SMU’s dismal record in 2008) so I think that this shows that Colt can learn an offense and take control quickly when given the opportunity. Brennan is also very accurate as he threw 182 passes without an interception in 2006. Colt is always getting bashed as being a system quarterback, however he was a rising star when he was at Colorado (and he probably would’ve been starting by his Junior year at the latest) and he is way too accurate to be merely a “system QB”. Tim Chang is the best example of a system QB as he also put up gaudy numbers in the run and shoot despite lacking elite skills, however Tim just made too many bad throws to be effective in any offense that didn’t throw 50+ passes per game. Colt is ALOT more durable and accurate than Chang EVER was. Brennan just has the overall package as a QB: accuracy, a decent arm, and (most importantly) the swagger and self confidence that allows his teammates to believe that he can get the job done.

Nobody...
is arguing that CB is not better than TC… by far a better QB than Chang in fact. I’m a pretty avid College football follower and given that… WAC numbers as a QB on a consistent basis I will have a hard time arguing should trump consistent numbers from a QB in, lets say, the Big10-SEC-Big12-ACC- or heck, it may be a push on putting them up against the Sun Belt Conferenc, LOL…
Overall, the coaches like Campbell at this point to give them a better chance of winning games-as a team-… The NFL, as a whole, has a pretty good eye for talent going into a players 2nd/3rd year in the league and also for playing the “best available.” So, as for now, I will trust that the coaches are doing their “job” of giving the team the BEST shot at winning- and have to stand firm behind their decisions. Colt must not be ready yet, or there would be a camp battle- and who knows- maybe there will be by mid-training!!!?! But many analyst are believing that Campbell will/should have a break-out year… Here’s to hoping he does!! But if he doesn’t- let the next leader shine!! ;)

Good fit
Colt Brennan would be a pretty good fit for the WCO. Quarterbacks take a long time to grow and I cannot wait to see him in later years. I am even surprised that he slipped to the 5th round. As for where he belongs on the depth chart, come on people, he’s only in his second year. I hate it when I go to a game and Campbell throws an incompletion and this group yells “We want Colt!”. Fans need to understand that it is a long process for many QB’s to grow, and not every QB drafted is Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco. Aaron Rodgers just had his first 16 game season. So in short, Campbell for the future.
