Haynesworth Was Offered More Money From Tampa

Tampa Offered Haynesworth More Money

"They offered me a whole lot more, and even with their tax situation, it could have been 20 percent more. But you look at Washington, they've got a lot of the pieces together. They're right there. They're in a huge market. It's one of the largest markets in the world. You've just got a large, huge media outlet and it can be life beyond football. Going to Tampa, I mean, great city. Looking at it from the off-season standpoint, I love the water. I love to be out in the sun. It's just awesome, but it would've been like another Nashville. Tampa doesn't have that big market and they don't have a huge fan base like the Washington Redskins do, so I think it was just a choice just to look at it that way."

It's nice to know (even though it's scary at the same time) that Snyder was actually outbid by another team for a marquee player. Haynesworth seemed to have a better assesment of the Redskins when he was being scouted than the so called "experts" do right now. I'm glad that Haynesworth chose the Redskins and I feel sorry for Romo, McNabb, and Eli this upcoming year.

Wait...

Didn’t he sign barely after midnight the first day of free agency? And he weighed his money offers vs. team situations THAT quickly? He’s not doing the Redskins any favors in their tampering case. Bye bye, draft picks.

Baseless

Like he said, Tampa offered more money but he saw more opportunity here. Also, I read more transcripts from the conversation and he just did not want to be in Tennessee anymore, so even if it wasn’t here it was going to be anywhere other than the titans.

It doesn’t matter if he didn’t want to be in Tennessee. Totally irrelevant. If there’s overwhelming evidence (and there’s plenty of it) that the Redskins had contact with Haynesworth and/or his agent before the free agency period, they’re losing a draft pick…

by Bye, Dawk :( on Jun 26, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by all means

please let us know what this “overwhelming” evidence is. he said they got the call from the redskins at 12:15, and that tampa called FIRST! like it has been posted sooooo many times, haynesworth has the same agent as one of the players on our squad. the only thing ANYONE has is speculation. but if you know something different, share.

His agent had lunch with the owner 3 days prior, he signed a deal barely after midnight, he apparently had another offer that was worth $20 million more (you’d think maybe he might want to at least chew on that decision for more than an hour or 2 before deciding between the 2 offers), and the Titans forwarded to the league office newspaper stories, a radio clip, and electronic communication that they believe show there was improper contact.

The 49ers lost a pick a year ago with a lot less.

We’ll see, I guess. Get ’em Titans!

That’s still only an argument towards Snyder and the agent having lunch together.
That you think he should spend more time pondering about which one to pick is irrelevant.

Retort

Haynesworth’s agent represents many, many players. Some of which are on our team.

Happens after every free agency. WEAK.

he apparently had another offer that was worth $20 million more

And he just listed some of the reasons above why he didn’t want that contract.

the Titans forwarded to the league office newspaper stories, a radio clip, and electronic communication
Hearsay and circumstantial.
The 49ers lost a pick a year ago with a lot less.
Wrong. Actually, they had emails, recorded voice mails, and Briggs admission later which was all A LOT more than the Titanics have in their flimsy little case.

Haynesworth’s agent represents many, many players. Some of which are on our team.

Yeah, ONE player on the Redskins… Malcolm Kelly. Kelly has 3 years left on his contract, and did NOTHING last year – Nothing to discuss there whatsoever. And if they were discussing other players throughout the league, that would ALSO qualify as tampering. Just seems the timing of the dinner (3 days before the start of free agency) is just a wee bit more than coincidental.

Happens after every free agency. WEAK.

Can’t argue there… But guess what? The NFL doesn’t like it, they want to crack down on tampering, and what better example to make of it than to punish one of the most recognizable owners in sports?

And he just listed some of the reasons above why he didn’t want that contract.

Yeah, and he was able to come to that conclusion because he had a number of days to think about it, not an hour or 2.

Hearsay and circumstantial.

Huh? Hearsay and circumstantial? Do you know what they have? Seriously, do you? Because I don’t. But I gotta think though that they have to have SOMETHING to be making such a strong push.

What else have you got? Because I can knock these softballs out of the park all day!

More like a pop-ups to second base.

Speculative. Snyder is often seen publicly in those kinds of settings with agents.

The NFL doesn’t like it, they want to crack down on tampering,
Meh. Not really. A proposal by the competition committee that is presently before NFL owners would create a two-day window before the opening of the free agency period during which an eligible player could negotiate freely with all teams.
Yeah, and he was able to come to that conclusion because he had a number of days to think about it, not an hour or 2.
The Redskins and Haynesworth agreed to terms of a deal by 5:30 a.m. Feb. 27. Look back at every free agency and you will see deals are commonly made that early. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Do you know what they have? Seriously, do you? Because I don’t.
This is the whole problem with your baseless and uninformed accusations.
But I gotta think though that they have to have SOMETHING to be making such a strong push.
Why? What do they have to lose by crying claims of tampering? Absolutely nothing. But if Fischer and Co. somehow get lucky and win the claim, then they may get a draft pick and take a shot at Snyder for snatching up the engine of their defense.

First of all he didn’t sign until like 2 am or maybe even 4, which is not 12:01 like you like to believe, and there is no way that will be found guilty for tampering.

Furthermore wouldn’t this claim that more teams were tampering or that there was no tampering b/c he fielded offers from the Bucs, NYG, ATL, and Denver.

I think your spandex is too tight again and not allowing blood to flow to your brain.

Ohhhhhhh...

I feel silly now that I know it was 2am… Well, in that case he had a whole 2 hours to ponder the next 7 years of his life… My mistake.

by Bye, Dawk :( on Jun 26, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't be naive

Haynesworth knew in advance what teams were interested in him via the media…so it’s not like he got blind-sided at 12:01. I mean, Snyder and Chad Speck had dinner 3 nights before…there’s no hard proof of what they talked about. Sure, you’d be an idiot to say they never talked salary and Albert….but come on, every team does this and Tennessee already knew they weren’t keeping Albert. Everyone’s making a mountain out of a mole hill.

by KevinE on Jun 26, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

so i'll ask you again

how did he also field offeres from the Bucs and others? Were they tampering also?

And if i was an athlete who was offered one of the biggest deals in the history fo the game to play for one of the most historic franchises in all of sports and in a great market, i think it wouldn’t be that hard of a decision

Yeah, I’m sure they probably were. I’m sure every team tampers. But if the Titans want to pursue the tampering charges, I’d bet they win and the Skins lose a pick.

agents can approach teams, teams can’t approach agents

by travisjh86 on Jun 26, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's not really true...

Sure, agents don’t get penalized for contacting teams, but that doesn’t mean that just because the agent contacted the team first, it makes it ok to talk to them.

by Bye, Dawk :( on Jun 26, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok, first of all we are Redskins fans do you really think losing a 5th round draft pick would really hurt us on a personal level, the way you are hoping it does?

Second of all, tampering is VERY hard to prove. Cool the 49ers got caught with Briggs, but you don’t think the Vikings tampered with Farve last year when he was still under contract with the Pack? Did anything come of it? NO! And that is a devision rival.

I believe a lot of other players, including your boyfriend BDawk were signed on the first day of free agency, is this b/c they tampered?

by pas493 on Jun 26, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like I said above, I’m sure most, if not all teams tamper… But we’re not talking about them. I’m just saying the Redskins are likely to lose a pick because of it this year.

And 5th round picks are nothing to sneeze at. The Eagles have a former 5th rounder that’s been to a Pro Bowl (Trent Cole) another one that will start this year (Brent Celek) and another contributor (Omar Gaither). Former Redskin 5th rounders include Dexter Manley, Timmy Smith, and Brian Mitchell. So yeah, it’s relevant.

And by the way, do you like the masterful job I’ve done completely turning this thread from a positive story about Haynesworth choosing the Redskins’ team over Tampa’s money into a thread about the Redskins’ lingering tampering charges?

by Bye, Dawk :( on Jun 26, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

we won’t lose a tampering case, there is NO clear evidence, it won’t happen…

The only thing that is guaranteed this year is that the Skins will whoop the Iggles ass for victory number three and then four in a row

you're forgeting one major thing,

Briggs went back to chicago, he probably ratted out the 49ers to help his team out.
everyone involved with the albert case on our side will deny it…
and agents are allowed to contact teams about their clients free agency
i’m too lazy to look up the rule for you but if you don’t believe me look it up yourself

Old news

I remember hearing about this back when Big Al was drafted in April. Maybe the 20% more is what was never revealed. Either way, Snyder payed market value for the best DT in the NFL, who’s 28 yrs. old and in his prime.

RAK EM UP!

why

do you all humor this poor Iggles fan. He obviously feels so little about his teams chances this year that he gets on this msg board to check in on us. As I’ve said before, the charges are a joke. The Titans are just crying over spilled Milk. And their evidence is laughable. The “Radio Clip” they have is Rock Cartwright talking about the possibility of getting Haynesworth. Good ole’ Cartwright, the ROCK of our personnel department. The newspaper stories mean nothing. If they start using that fluff as evidence, then the apocalypse is coming. Could you imagine Mike Wise or Sally Jenkins being called on to provide “expert” testimony? Or the rumors that papers put out being considered true?

I mean, look at some of the things these sport-writers say. “Dallas is the best team in the league” – HA! “Mark Sanchez will end up a Redskin” – didn’t happen. “Donovan McNabb is washed up” – OK, so they’re right SOME of the time.
