Dallas Released Greg Ellis

Dallas just released Greg Ellis, I think he'd be a pretty good fit in Washington and could be bring some much needed pressure on QB's.  He would also get a chance to get after Romo twice a year with some extra incentive since he's been trying to get out of Dallas for awhile now.  What's everyone think? Too old? Don't need him?

Just thought I'd put this up to see everyone else's opinions.

Interesting

The dude was a locker-room leader and looking at his stats, the guy can definitely play. I’d be curious to see what kind of $$ he would go for…I’d think it’d be more than the veteran minimum.

He was good in the locker room, but for the past 5 years he’s complained about wanting more money or restructuring his contract. It was annoying as a fan… not sure if he made a difference in the locker room.

As an FYI, if yall pay him more than 1.5 million, we don’t have to pay him 1.5 million, so I am in favor of the Redskins paying another aging pash rusher who is past his prime.

No matter which team Ellis signs with he will receive at least $1.5 million because of the guaranteed portion of his Cowboys contract. If a team signs Ellis for less than that amount, Jones will have to pay the difference.

I don't want him

He is a good player, and I could even get past his malcontent status briefly. But a malcontent Cowgirl?

Also, I am simply unprepared to bring in another older veteran that would possibly eat into the development of Orakpo, Henson, Fincher, and Rocky. I like our defensive squad right now. If we add any veterans, shouldn’t it be on the offensive side?

Ellis

If he gets out of line, Haynesworth can step on his head.

I’m right there with you, I don’t see signing Ellis as a quality move, but it would be a typical move.

he wouldn't be playing linebacker for us

we’d play him in the 4-3 as a defensive end, and if anything i think he would help in the development of orakpo as a pass rusher

he played linebacker in the 3-4 for dallas but the majority of his years in the nfl he’s played DE

Our offense

is definitely a lot more sketchy.

Yall probably should have at least one vet to teach the young kids a few tricks of the trade. I can see signing Ellis for that point, but the kids should start over him.

Mixed feelings

In the back of my mind, I know that Phillips is coming back from injury and is like 56 yrs. old (not really). So, having Ellis come in as another DE would definitely provide a safety net there & make us DEEP on the D-line overall. Deep as in Giants’ deep.

I guess it comes down to how much $$ he wants.

He would good off the corner

He could definately add depth and create up the field pressure. At a fraction of the cost of Jason Taylor and hopefully no staff infection

by JBT on Jun 3, 2009 8:22 AM EDT reply actions

probably not

While adding depth is always a good thing the managers need to break out of their habit of signing names for too much money so sign him only if he’ll play for a reasonable amount of money for the role he fills. If he’s just going to be a substitute then only pass him sibstitute money, not what you’d pay a starter.

Playing the backup players

How do backup players learn and become break out players if they never have the opportunity to play?
the Redskins need to focus on staying young, use the solid “REDSKIN” veterans with them being backed up with…
If at DE: Buzzbee, Jackson, Skolnitsky
DT: Antinio Dixon
Or at LB
Glenn, Young, Henson, to a Fincher and Blades

The Redskins have young depth, and with a goal of ALWAYS being competitive they need to develop the young depth to take over when it’s time..See Heyer and Redskin now a lion Jansen.

skolnitsky needs to make the team first, he still wears braces

Yall could sign him, give him a $100,000 bonus, and play him while yall are in contention, and if yall dip to 0-4 (just saying, not trying to pick a fight), then bench him, and play the kids. That will give them time to acclimate to the system, and yall don’t have to give up on the season right from the start.

Greg Ellis

Personally, I think he would be a perfect fit at OLB for 1 year while Orakpo learns the ropes of the NFL from him.

Our weak spot on D

Daniels, Orakpo, and Hall will be defending the strong side edge most of the time. To game plan against the Redskins, I would plan to avoid Haynesworth in the middle and try to get to the outside around Daniels. This could force Orakpo to make mistakes while he is learning and wear down Daniels and Fletcher. Hall is not a great tackler and is a step down from Springs in run support. I would not mind adding a vet at LB or DE for the right price.

Yall signed Deion Sanders and James Washington from us...

at the tail end of their careers. Look how well that worked out. I’m trying to think of who else turned turncoat. The ’00’s have been mostly barren in talent for the Cowboys…

While yall are taking for Cowboys, I would appreciate if someone took Quincy Carter. He’s just a sad little man and I think making the league minimum might perk him up a bit.
