Redskins outlook on the 2009 Eagles
Redskins outlook on the 2009 Eagles
Strengths
McNabb - He's a very good QB who has never had very many good WR's to work with.
DL
The eagles have plenty of quality depth at DL with Abiamiri, Bunkley, Cole, Howard, and Patterson. The linemen acounted for 34.5 sacks last year - yikes. They were also very effective versus the run.
LB
Bradley isn't a big name to a lot of people but he can make a lot of plays both against the run and the pass.
DB
The Eagles pass defense was 1 of the best in the NFL last year and they should be able to repeat that ranking. Asante Samuel is a top quality CB and Brown is solid and smart. If anything they've improved with the signing of Hobbs from New England.
Weaknesses
WRs
The Eagles have few threats at WR with DeSean Jackson as their only real threat. It's rare when a rookie WR makes an impact in his first year so I don't expect that much out of Maclin this year. But Jackson was a rookie last year and he produced so it's not preposterous that Maclin will make an impact as a rookie. If Kevin Curtiss can stay healthy he could have a serious impact as well. Like the Redskins, all the Eagles really need is for someone, anyone, to step up and become a legitimate #2 WR and their passing game could be very good. But based on past performance they have a 1 man show at the moment.
Other Concerns (Neither strengths not weaknesses)
Brian Westbrook is already injured this year. Will he rehab in time to play a full season and will he be the same player? Nobody really knows the answer to those 2 questions and with Westbrook turning 30 it wouldn't be shocking to see his abilities diminish. If Westbrook is healthy he moves into the 'Strength' category but if he's not then McCoy had better step up.
OL Everyone is assuming that Jason Peters and Stacy Andrews are huge upgrades at OT but Peters gave up 11.5 sacks last year so that assumption is not very compelling.
Summary
If the Eagles don't get into the playoffs then they will have grossly under achieved in 2009. They should be in a dog fight with the Giants to win the division. Can they avoid choking in the playoffs?

Fair assesment
The only thing I disagree with is the fact that you listed our OL as a concern. I would call it an asset. The Eagles OL only gave up 23 sacks last year and have added two quality free agents. Whether or not Peters and Andrews live up to their hype is yet to be determined but they are both “quality” players that should bolster an already good OL.
A concern I would have mentioned is the loss of Brian Dawkins. While I am under the impression that he definitely has lost a step, he was without doubt the heart and soul of our defense. Sean Jones will be a good addition and the development of 2nd year player Quinten Demps will help fill the void left by Dawkins. The issue I am leary about is the loss of his presence as both a mentor and motivator.

But you forgot
You also lost Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan..so it’s not like you just added 2 players to an already good OL. You lost 2 big ones.

but u forgot
ok pal yea we lost runyan and thomas but dont u realize we upgraded at the position at both sides with younger and more athletic players. the only thing we lose w/ those 2 is experience, dont get me wrong i know thats important but TRA WILLIAM THOMAS was getting KILLED down the stretch last year by faster ends just look at the ARIZONA game. Right now in this day and age TRA THOMAS is not even in JASON PETERS LEAGUE.. LETS GO BIRDS LETS SWEEP THE SKINS THIS YEAR AND EXTRACT OUR REVENGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brent Celek
is going to have a break-out season…Jason Avant is on schedule to contribute a on a larger scale too
Reid has to stop being a wuss…and find a way to pound the football or they will continue to choke repeatedly

or since bye, dawk wasn’t doing one for the eagles he decided to do it so it wasn’t biased

Yeah...
Can’t do one for the Eagles. I could definitely point out a few weaknesses (which would be hard enough, and I don’t necessarily agree with the ones above), but there’s no way I could write with the same snarky, obnoxious tone that I employed for the other teams.

Okay
I think you forgot a couple things….it was a lil on the short side, less analysis.
i do agree w/ the line being neither a strength or a weakness…its more like a wait and see then a concern though…there’s good reason for Eagle fans to be optimistic. Read one of the posts we have on peters though at bgn instead just regurgitating all that B.S. about 11.5 sacks. There’s a post w/ actual video of the supposed 11.5 sacks. I think it worked out to him having about 6 actual sacks. While still on the high side, it’s atleast single digits. Stacey Andrews is gonna be a gaurd and his brother will play RT, and from the looks of it is healthy and his past issues are behind him. We should have very good/pro bowl book ends to our line if it all goes as planned. Can’t really say how Peters will handle the nfc beast or how stacey’s knee will heal.
I would say you put a lot of categories in the strength department w/o analyzing them, almost seems like you’re tryin to blow smoke up Eagle fans asses.
You forgot our weakness at the TE spot.
The weakness/concern of not having JJ at the helm of our defense. Although Mcdermott has actually been there longer then JJ the ingame split second decisions obviously can’t be duplicated.
Lastly, the most humorous weakness you could have pointed out. The eating habits of Big Red and his inability to manage a clock at the end of a game. Also you didnt take a shot at the “leadership” role that everyone wants to dwell upon.
IDK, the more i look at it the more i think this is a farce.
"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

only thing i'd change
is the weakness with the WR’s u should talk more about the injuries they had last year & if they can stay healthy the could make it tough for defenses to cover
but i would also go into more detail

I think
that the Eagles defense is going to be VERY interesting to watch. Nobody can dispute the effect that Jim Johnson has had on that defense. As long as he’s been there, Andy Reid has never had to worry about that side of the ball. I think I read where they also lost one of their defensive position coaches. I’m not saying their defense WILL be bad, but I am saying it very well could be.

That's the thing
Jim Johnson won’t be there this year it’s looking
by KevinE on Jun 19, 2009 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
More then likely
JJ will not be running the defense, hopefully he’s atleast healthy/with his family.
McDermott has been w/ the Eagles longer than JJ., so im sure he can run the defense in the same manner that JJ used to run it. What can’t be duplicated will be JJ’s in game decisions and half time adjustments. That is the area that could be a concern when it comes to JJ not heading the defense.

lost in translation
Yeah, that’s what my point was. It will be interesting to see how they do without Johnson. Just like it will be interesting to see how Tampa does without Kiffin.

Re-post
Cowboys Take on 2009 Iggles
I was working on a Redskins take on the 2009 Eagles, but it looks like a Cowgirl beat me to it. I thought he gave a pretty fair assessment, but in true Philly style, they can dish it out, but not take it. Definitely Rec’d.
CHECK IT OUT.
