They need to find a way

to speed the game up. Only a catatonic person can watch it anymore. Put time limits on every pitch and get rid of some of the innings. Shorten the season. Reduce the number of teams. Create a friggin’ salary cap already. I’m so sick of all the talent going to big market teams like the Yankees (who still can’t win), the Mets, and the Red Sox.

I had fun going to the Nats last year. It’s more affordable than football and it’s a slow enough game you can move around and not miss much.

by snowburnt on May 5, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Same here.

Going to the games is a great experience and affordable. And I do envy the Yanks and their new stadium. I want to see the Nats rise to greatness and the Orioles return to greatness. But it just doesn’t seem very likely with all of the talent being sucked into the big market black holes. But, then there are examples of teams like the Rays who are a great small market team.

It’s like with the ‘Skins trying to get the best performers, you know what they did, you don’t know what you’ll get.

Once the GM figures out how to use the farm, I think the Nats’ll be good for a while.

Yep.

Finding diamonds in the rough, and helping players maximize their potential is there best shot.

and baseball is better than hockey

you just need a team better than the Nats and O’s to watch, although definitely not a club with the limitless douchebaggery of the Red Sox and Yankees

by Abstract Capital on May 5, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt I would get excited about baseball unless I lived in Boston or New York or the Nats did really well…It’s more a part of the culture there.

Hockey is violently graceful, very fast with action that can turn on a dime. Baseball is about slow unwinding strategy.

Different sports for different types.

I wish it really was a burn

but the B-Jays are kickin’ ass right now. Over the Yanks and Sox. Complete opposite to the bottom dwelling O’s and Nats. : (

Absolutely, like the Blue Jays

Yes. Over last 11 years, the Blue Jays have averaged 82 wins in the toughest division in baseball. Over the last 3 seasons, they have averaged 85 wins per year, and fielded over .550 winning percentages against AL East division opponents (only to fuck it all up against the shitty teams, to my chagrin). That is good enough during most seasons, to win the AL West, NL West, or AL Central. Most of the shitty teams like the Nats, O’s, Pirates, and Rangers have had shoddy ownership &/or management that has figured most decisively in their uncompetitiveness. Peter Angelos, Bobby Bowden, the Rangers’ Melvin & Co., & the faceless failures in the Pirates organization have non-uniquely with regards to $$$ run their teams all into the ground with dysfunctional decision-making. The central purpose of the salary cap isn’t to enable fairly competitive franchises/middle-market teams to succeed, but to affirmatively enable clubs with very limited markets like Oakland, Milwaukee and Detroit, to have “a shot” against the New York Yankees & Boston Red Sox of sports. The success of teams like the Rays, the Phillies, the White Sox, the Astros, and the Rockies proves that a clumsy regulatory apparatus like a salary cap has virtually no effect on the efficacy of a franchise. Looking at the NBA, the historically poor franchises have struggled centrally because they have idiot game-callers in the owner’s box & at the personnel management level like Donald Sterling, MDSr., Blazers ownership & management during the “Jailblazers” era, poor drafting and trading by the Knicks (huge market, big money, poor management culture => bad news bears), Grizz, T-Wolves, in addition to the Celts prior to the “Big 3” trade. In the NFL it’s essentially same story, the Cardinals enabled themselves to reach the SB through savvy coaches like Whisenhunt and Haley, the Giants & Eagles tend to win more than us because they make smarter personnel decisions, while we & Cowboys fans live in daily fear of what our decision-makers are going to do for our own team, the Pats certainly don’t win because of their “wide” popularity, as most of the country seems to hate and ignore them except for the tiny New England market + ESPN (screw you Bristol, CT), the Steelers & Ravens win through notoriously lethal drafting and player development, etc. Conversely the Raiders, the Lions, the 49ers, the Browns, and the Bungles, through the influences of Al Davis, Matt Millen, and their like lesser-known associates in relatively influential decision-making posts on the field and in corporate have made falling on one’s own sword a yearly tradition. I could go on but I have exams and a life, but these are my thoughts

Well said.

Although I’m annoyed that you used the example of the Rockies rather than the Dbacks. :-D

Good points.

Out of 30 total division champs in 5 years of MLB, only 5 teams won their division despite having a substantially lower payroll than their higher spending division rivals. The 2008 Rays, 2007 Rockies and Indians, 2006 A’s and Twins. Other than the Rays (jury is still out), none of these teams repeated as division champs. Of the last 30 division champions, 11 had payrolls over $100M, compared to only 1 below $50M. Getting to the postseason is critical because it increases the team’s revenue considerably. Not only are playoff tickets a lucrative item, but a winning team (typically) sees regular-season sales soar.

Teams like the Rays have shown that it is possible to build a winning team on a low payroll. How did they do it? By having 10 straight abysmal seasons, resulting in many high draft picks. Once their players’ contracts reach their end, it will be difficult for them to maintain a high caliber team without significantly increasing their payroll. Even their one successful season was due partly to a $20M jump in payroll from the previous year. In order for the Rays to continue to compete in the coming years, they will have to increase their payroll dramatically, or start rebuilding again.

The average NFL team, which operates under a salary cap with non-guaranteed contracts, is worth $1.04 billion. In baseball, only the Yankees are valued at more than $1 billion, and the MLB league average (including Yanks) is just $472 million. The Yanks continue to outspend everybody for players and, in turn, increase their revenue even more by selling more tickets, souvenir jerseys, increased advertising, etc. No matter how long the Yankees have missed out on a championship while spending hundreds of millions on their players, they are still in a better position to be more competitive, and to contend for a championship. When one team spends upwards of $200 million and another is spending close to $20M per year, there is a serious problem.

Hey!

The 2007 Rockies didn’t win their division…. the Dbacks did. (With an even LOWER payroll)

If there were no salary cap

teams like the Nats, O’s, and Blue Jays might get a shot at one of the big names. You may not care about big name players as a rabid fan, but from a revenue perspective, can’t you see the argument for a salary cap?

Correct me if I'm wrong

but having Alex Ovechkin playing for the Caps is the first time in D.C. sports history that we have had the best player from that sport playing on one of our teams. We did have Michael Jordan playing for the Wiz briefly. But he was past his prime by then (although he was still one of the top 25 best players in the game). We’ve had some really great players (especially on the Skins), but never the best player from that sport. Definitely not in the past 25 years.
