Jansen Released

Saw it on redskins.com and thought I'd start the thread. Seems strange to me that we're releasing from the line we're trying to bolster. Maybe it was cap room related, and he'll resign later at a smaller contract. Or maybe we're confident enough in the young guns. I hope this means Mike Williams is impressing...

Any ideas?

Cap Room info:

Jansen was due to earn a base salary of $1.35 million this season, plus a $1 million bonus if he was on the roster on July 1st, 2009. He was scheduled to receive base salaries of $4.35 million in each of the final two years of his contract.

More cap room freed.

The team also is off the hook for a $1 million roster bonus.

The bonus would have been earned if Jansen had been on the roster as of July 1.

plus he was injured more often than not. He’s been a great player over the years, but recently you couldn’t count on a whole season from the guy.

Nicely done SSBlitz

You just beat me to it.

My initial thoughts:
1) Mike Williams must be doing well because Jansen vs. Williams was a very realistic camp battle (Joe and I both thought of this right away)
2) Heyer is the starter right now?
3) Does Rinehart factor in this at all?
4) Is Joe Bugel pitching the mother of all tantrums in Ashburn?

Initial reaction:
1) this move makes sense
2) he may very well be available in August if either party is interested in talking to each other if a need arises on the Skins’ side
3) I like it

That said: Jansen was a long-time starter for us. He was a solid Redskin. Standing O on the way out.

by Ken Meringolo on May 29, 2009 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

i think bridges has a better chance of starting than williams does… think about it, williams hasn’t played in how long? he might have lost all that weight and is almost down to playing size but you think he can last a whole game?
i see rinehart taking over randy thomas’ at guard, but who knows
i’m pretty sad to see jansen go, agree with the standing O
hopefully his release means that heyer, williams, and/or bridges look good cause i didn’t see any of them other than heyer out battling jansen in camp

by travisjh86 on May 29, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

don't get me wrong

I don’t see Bridges or Williams starting. But like you said, Williams is probably at best, quality depth. And I just don’t know enough about Bridges yet to decide if he can challenge Heyer.

True,

I think jansen would of been better depth than Williams though, but like everyone else noted, money was probably an issue

At this moment in time

I see our patchwork O-line looking something like this:

Starters: Samuels, Dockery, Rabach, Thomas, Heyer
Back-ups: M. Williams, Clark, E. Williams or W. Montgomery, Rinehart, Bridges

by VA_Skin on May 30, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly how is that patch work

All-pro tackle
Top-10 guard
Solid Center
Solid guard
up and coming Tackle
Seems like the line is getting younger quicker, but not to quick to lose continuity. Rinehart could surpass Thomas.
And what about Batiste, coaches have had very good things to say about him too

by dr WNC on May 30, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Because

Samuels has a lot of miles (and injuries); he is coming back from surgery so you have to wonder if he will really be 100% ready and fully conditioned.

Dockery seems to be a bright spot. He’s younger (28) and hasn’t had any major injuries in his NFL career (93 starts?). But, I’m still not sure why him and Peters gave up so many sacks in Buffalo last year.

Rabach is smallish and tends to get manhandled by the bigger 3-4 NTs (which he will face like what? 5 or 6 times this year?).

Thomas is coming back from a serious injury and whether or not he can play a full season is very questionable.

Heyer has a lot of potential but he needs to take his game to the next level.

All of our backups are BIG unknowns who may or may not even pan out. I really hope Rinehart surpasses Thomas. Then, our average OL age would really be lowered. As for Batiste, I can’t see us having more than 10 OL on a 53-man roster.

point 2 i agree with, cant really argue with, wouldnt be surprised to see it happen. 1+3 on the other hand… blind homerism, end of story.

I think they went to Jon, told him that it was Stephan’s job to lose and Jansen said he would rather leave and try to find a new team he could start with rather than riding the bench. Normally I would expect the Front Office to oblige the wishes of a long term vet like that but in this case (with no real depth behind him) I think this is a move that is really going to bite them in the ass. I dont care what Mike Williams is doing in camp, he still weighs 370+, has been out of the league for 2(??) years, and didnt prove anything in his first stint in the league that he has the skills to get it done.

I know when this post was written many still believed this was saving the team cap room (while in reality it is nearly doubling his cap #) so forgive me if you have come to your senses by the time this is read.

Profootball talk
has him Signing with Detriot, as early as next week

Hours after veteran offensive tackle Jon Jansen was cut by the Washington Redskins, he has reached a verbal agreement with the Detroit Lions, according to Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free-Press.
Per the report, the deal won’t become official until the former University of Michigan lineman passes a physical set for Monday.
Jansen is a Michigan native who played for the Redskins for the past nine seasons.
Drafted in the second round in 1999, Jansen started 123 games for the NFC East franchise.
UPDATE: According to Adam Caplan of Scout.com, who’s also reporting that Jansen has agreed to terms, Jansen is expected to sign a veteran minimum one-year contract worth $845,000

I wish Jansen could have retired a Redskin, but that is life in the salary cap world. He was a beast in his prime and represented our franchise well both on & off the field. He was an ironman for years (started 122 games), had a blue-collar work ethic, and was one tough mauler.

i think buges gets too attached to his linemen, if he took a step back and looked at what we have on our line he would of been begging snyder to pick up a RT with the 3rd rounder

by travisjh86 on May 29, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I felt the same way when I heard all of the interviews with Buges. If our OL could make it more than halfway through the season without dropping like flies, then we would be straight.

With the exit of Jansen, we are now counting on Heyer to step up and be the MAN. He’s a good pass blocker, but he needs to improve at run blocking and understanding our run schemes. I like the additions of Bridges and Williams (assuming he will drop another 25 lbs and stay healthy), because of their NFL experience. If they can assimilate Zorn’s hybrid WCO by pre-season, then they should become competent backups. I really like Rinehart and was hugely disappointed to not see him play last year after all of our OL injuries. I hope he can pan out. I haven’t heard much about the UFA Center we brought in shortly after the draft. But that is a backup position that we will need to address as well.

Absolutely the right question to ask

I am ECSTATIC about Orakpo. I think he is going to impact our defense on Day 1. Oher was the guy on the board they were considering instead of Orakpo. Fine, we take Orakpo. The real dilemma we face now is whether we could have gotten a RT instead of Barnes in the 3rd round. At that point there was no Bridges and there was no Williams right? Sooooooooooo…

Also Travis…my understanding is that Bugel was the one telling the team NOT to draft a RT.

by Ken Meringolo on May 29, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

All of the starting were gone in the first round with only questionable guards left in the third round from what I saw. Rinehart was drafted in the third round last year and that is about the quality that was there in the thrid round this year. I think we would have had to trade up to get an RT in this years draft. We are now very thin at T, hopefully they are planning to make another move.

well until the NFL starts a special “Mature Adult Draft” your best bet is drafting some SEC or B12 underclassman and grooming them into mature adults.

Jansen

Since Jon was apparently the top backup center, does this increase the chance of bringing back Pete Kendall (to back up center and both guard slots)? Most things I read from the team suggested nobody thought that Jansen was still a starting caliber right tackle, an idea apparently reinforced in the OTAs. So, just too expensive to keep.

Overall Good Move

First, Jansen is and will always be a Redskins, Thanks for the Great years!
The early release accelarates money causing almost a 6 million cap hit, although saving 1 million in Cash on hand. According to the insider, he actually does some reporting

Zorn’s job security has been in question since last season’s second-half collapse, and some team sources have questioned the significance of his role, if any, in major decision-making, but the release of Jansen, and the accompanying cap hit of a little more than $6 million, would seem to make it clear that Zorn still has some juice with Snyder. Zorn was the one who pushed for the move, which should have been made before last season.

In addition Redskin Insider has a lot of team quotes
with three primary options at right tackle. Coach Jim Zorn shared his thoughts on each.

The options Heyer, Williams and Bridges. Heyer has the inside track, Williams has all the potential in the world it’s not a bad read.
But he said the evaluation by the coaching staff – primarily Zorn, offensive coordinator Sherman Smith and offensive line coach Joe Bugel – made it a relatively easy football decision.

Another good Article explaining the Decision by the coaching staff.

Updated on Cap hit

Per ProfootballTalk

The good news for the Redskins is that cutting tackle Jon Jansen allowed the team to avoid $2.35 million in payments due to Jansen this year in the form of roster bonus and base salary.
The bad news is that the move unleashed a cap acceleration in excess of $4 million.
Per a league source, the acceleration resulting from bonus allocations otherwise applicable to 2010 and 2011 is $4.076 million.
Bottom line? The Redskins will take a net cap charge of $1.726 million in connection with the move.
But the $4 million acceleration costs no money, while at the same time creating the impression that the Redskins are spending up to the cap. Even if, as to Jansen, his total cap charge of more than $6 million arises from money he previously received.

by jdubz on May 30, 2009 10:41 AM EDT reply actions

We need a GM.

Not b/c of Jansen per se, but because dead money is our story every year:

When you add Jansen’s dead money amount with Brandon Lloyd’s amount ($5.3M) counting this year, you have $11.4M of cap space being taken up by players no longer on the team. Add Shawn Springs ($2.5M) and Marcus Washington ($2M) to that amount, and you then have nearly $16M in dead money on the Skins’ books this year.

has some dead money, although not as much as ours. I don’t like it either. Think of how many offensive linemen we could have signed with $16M this year. Shoot me

Don't get it

I absolutely do not understand this move.

It’s not just Jansen vs. M. Williams, it’s E. Williams too. Jansen’s greatest asset is his versatility, he could’ve been a backup center. I hope we’re really sold on Edwin Williams (I was in college) being able to come in now as well.

I loved the Mike Williams pick up, but first we don’t draft Jamon Meredith (which is absolutely beyond me, he is a fantastic tackle and we had so many chances…) and then we let Jansen go… if those things are a result of betting on Williams or Bridges, I don’t like those pick ups nearly as much.

...one of those guys who reads all the time but barely comments

by Juice over Whine on May 31, 2009 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

I was also wondering if Jansen could back up Rabach at center (or play guard if needed), especially with all of the reps at center he was getting in Rabach’s absence. Maybe the plan is that while our salary cap will be taking a hit this year, throughout the following years that space will be freed up to bring in younger talent…
