3-4 Front as a Change of Look

Our team is looking pretty good to set-up the occasional 3-4 front to screw with opposing OC's.

Orakpo is an obvious fit at OLB, maybe with that new Henson guy on the other side?

And Blades and Fletcher would both make good ILBs.

We all know big Al can play NT, bookended with Daniels and Griffin maybe?

And then the standard Hall/Rogers/Horton/Landry in the secondary.

Not sure if they'll do it, but I'm setting it up on Madden anyways.

did you forget

Golston & Monty? oh and of course, Carter? We could have a starting 3-man front that is young and grow together for the next 4 or 5 years. Well then again, in a 3-4 Carter could rotate back out to OLB. You want big men as your front 3 in a 3-4 Defense. We have the depth for a fresh rotation on that. But in a 4-3, with the line we have right now is downright intimidating. I SOOOO look forward to seeing them reak havok. Our defense will finally break the top 3 this year. Blache lacks the aggressiveness to allow us to be truly dominant, but though he can be conservative, the overall talent of the defense will bump us up a little bit. With a stud D-line, the need to blitz declines.

Agreed.

The front 4 should bring enough heat on most plays.
But I’ll still want to blitz LaRon on every play against Kerry Collins :)

what about rocky

we have the personel to run a better 4-3 than 3-4

I agree.

But to have opponents plan for 4-3, only to face a 3-4 is a big change. Not every series, but the odd series once in a while would keep things interesting.

that's exactly

what I meant to say-just didn’t we could come out i a 3-4 maybe 20% of plays. A significant portion, but no over-kill. Just enough to keep the offense off balance.

I like the idea of using it for a series.

Keeps the OC busy while our offense is on the field, coming up with counter-attacks. Then come back the following series with our regular 4-3.

Actually, if you go back

Not a specific 3-4 but a hybrid during the last couple of games last year. Blache started to use Taylor in a more effective way near the end, and when Taylor was not hurt…Would expect to see those hybrid formations.

Curry, Orakpo, or the top 4 OLs... or back.

As I've commented before, I LOVE this idea.

Not so much as a permanent change, but as something to be utilized when the time is right to keep opposing teams guessing. With all of the good / great defensive linemen we have, we are more suited for a 4-3, predominately.

HOWEVER, as we all know, Mr. Albert Haynesworth can play any position on the line. He can play a 4-3 DT/DE & a 3-4 NT/DE. We have 2 ILBs for the 3-4 in Fletch and Blades. And IF Orakpo can successfully transition to a 3-4 OLB (I think he’ll be more suited for our 4-3 DE), then him or Wilson or Thomas or an UFA and Rocky can handle OLB.

Greg Blache always mixes it up nicely, incorporating mostly 4-3s, some 3-4s, and even the occasional 4-6.

(Off the top of my head) The 3-4 teams in the NFL are the Steelers, Chargers, Patriots, Jets, Browns, Cowboys, 49ers, , Ravens (base 4-3 but they run a hybrid and use 3-4 and even 4-6), Dolphins (base 4-3 but they run some hybrid). The Broncos & Packers will be switching over to a 3-4 (it seems like another team will be also). That makes 11 who will use it for sure.

Is it the defense or

Do most of those teams run a program which has remained constant, well at least the succesful ones…build a program be it a 4-3, 3-4 or whatever. Draft and sign FA who fit the program…Dominate!

ya its kinda growing on me seeing the success of some of the teams
but i just dont think its worth it with all of the 4-3 talent but i do agree with you in that it wouldnt be a bad idea to mix it up

by ST21 on Apr 27, 2009 10:14 PM EDT reply actions

In a video game, you can run all the 3-4 hybrid defense that you want. The reality of the matter is that you cannot change your base defense around “just to mess with the other OC” and think it’s going to be successful. Your guys are training in a system, and they know what to expect on each and every snap from their teammates. To go to a 3-4 is harder than just dropping a DT and adding a LB. There’s a lot of scheming and understanding involved in doing this.

You’d be devestating your defense by asking them to learn both systems “just to mess with the opposing coordinator”.

Your best bet is to kick ass in your current system. Heck, you could run a pop-warner 6-2 defense and win games if you did it to the best of your ability.

Scheme does not make a winner, it’s merely a piece of the puzzle.

Fair enough.

Ya, I think it was wishful thinking on my part. It’s working great in Madden though. (I keep it on rookie mode)

but if you really think about it.....

our personell “on paper” ALWAYS looks dynomite. That same personell has to go out there and consistantly produce. We got what it takes.. we just gotta use what we got.
