Last Entry on Cutler
A friend of mine that works in the NFL, who will remain anonymous, said the Redskins definitely made an offer to Chicago for a 2nd round pick in exchange for Campbell. The Bears obviously did not take it, but if that had gone through, that probably would have been everything Snyderrato needed to pull the trigger on Cutler. Trade the 2009/2010 1st round picks, and we'd still have a day 1 pick for this year.
I'm glad it's over. In JC we trust.

Soupy
took this very, very well. The franchise, and all Redskins fans, should be very proud of him, and proud to call him the FotF, if for no other reason than his team-first attitude and behavior — compare that to Baby Cutler’s in the exact same situation.

Who's to say he's not really pissed?
..but just smart enough to go to the media.

You mean...
…smart enough not to go to the media?
I wouldn’t blame him if he’s really pissed. I would be too, if I were told all offseason that I was the guy, and then the owner and ostensible GM go and try to trade you for some bitchy whiner from Denver. But he’s said, every time he’s asked, that that’s just the business side of things.

I hope he's pissed!
I hope he channels that rage into better play and leadership. He needs to be our General and take control of the situation. Take the lead and provide direction to these rookies on the team. When Devin Thomas continuously runs his routes wrong in a game, don’t be a choirboy, get in his face and straighten him out. You don’t see Manning and Brady standing there all meek and quiet. They’re fired up and intense, passionate about winning!

Yeah.
I don’t think it would hurt for him to get emotional in a game.

What COULD Campbell say?!
“I want out of Washington because I’ve had a mediocre career here”?
You’re comparing apples and turnips here.

So....
you think Cutler was right in whining his way out of Denver? And the Broncos were right in giving in to him?

I think there
is a a lot more to this soap opera than just Jay Cutler being mad at his coach about wanting to trade him. To constantly label Cutler as a whiny little bitch without knowing the whole story is just plain ignorant.
Cutler (and especially his agent) is smart enough to know that this is a business and every team receives and considers trade offers for players at every level.
It has been reported that McDaniels didn’t consider Cutler “football smart” and that he was concerned that Cutler was abusing alcohol. We know McDaniels lied to Cutler’s face because at first he lied to the media and said he never even tried to trade Cutler. Then later he confessed that he did actually actively seek to trade him for ‘1-year wonder’ Cassel.
It’s one thing for the owner or GM to shop the player and lie. But when the COACH (the guy you must trust in the heat of the battle and deal with constantly) lies to your face, accuses you of not being smart at your job, abusing alcohol with diabetes, makes it abundantly clear that your services aren’t that important and wants to replace you, it’s easy to see why they’re might be resentment and even hostility. Especially after Cutler’s HC and close mentor OC were abruptly fired and he had just laid it all out there during the season with a spectacular Pro-Bowl performance.
At this point, we don’t know most of what was said behind the scenes and it was obvious that both parties were trying to sell themselves as the good guy. Could Cutler have handled himself a little more “professionally” and suffered through. Yeah, certainly, but you know what? Life is too short to be miserable. And I guarantee that Chicago will definitely appreciate the skills he will bring to their franchise!

Doubt it. When’s the last time the Bears were able to sustain an effective passing attack at Soldier Field? That stadium’s just not cut out for a passing game — and getting Jay Cutler, 2009 Pro Bowler or not, isn’t going to make a damned bit of difference.

the Bears had an effective QB for their passing attack ?!
Jim McMahon?!?!
Just for the record, it sounds like you are predicting that Jay Cutler is clearly overrated and will be a BUST in Chicago?

I think Cutler
is overrated by many of the posters at Hogs Haven, yes. I’m not saying he’ll be a bust in Chicago — I’m just saying the passing game will be a bust. Has nothing to do with him.

All I can say
to this is that I disagree. Watching the guy play, I think their passing game will improve dramatically. And since the Bears will probably only need about 10 wins to clinch that division, Campbell and Cutler may end up meeting in the playoffs.

You mean
the Jim McMahon with 100 career TDs and 90 career INTs? With the 78.2 career passer rating? Who — in his best year, (in 1985) passed for only 2392 yards, 15 TDs and 11 INTs? The guy who, in 16 years in the NFL, passed for slightly over 18,000 yards? Who only passed for more than 2000 yards four times in his entire career? Who completed only 58% of his passes for his career?
That Jim McMahon?
Jim McMahon sucked — but the media loved him, so he ends up being overrated.

for some reason...
I trust the hell out of Campbell. I think this will make him a better player … and hopefully, around mid-season, he will have impressed us so much that we lock him up for a bunch more years. Jason has all the physical tools a QB needs — and it’s not his fault the offensive line broke down and the WR’s (beyond Santana and Cooley — who were doubled all season) couldn’t produce at all.
If Devin Thomas steps up, watch for Campbell to have a monster — a Pro Bowl — year this year. Jim Zorn is an excellent mentor for QB’s and Jason has all the right tools and instincts. Only 6 picks in 16 games? That’s amazing. Cutler was a pick machine with better receivers, a weaker schedule, and a better (statistically) o-line. I believe in JC and think he’s our guy for the next few years. Let’s hope.

Cutler was a pick machine with better receivers, a weaker schedule, and a better (statistically) o-line.
Not to mention, Cutler wasn’t THAT much better than JC last year. They had the same completion percentage (62.3%) and Cutler’s passer rating was barely better than JC’s (86 vs. 84.3). Sure, Cutler had more TDs and more yards, but much of that is attributable to Denver playing from behind because of their horrendous defense.
And sure, Cutler had more TDs and yards (pretty much the reason he made the Pro Bowl) but once again JC didn’t HAVE to throw that much. Also, JC’s TD/INT ratio was WAY better (2.2 vs 1.4).
Finally, JC’s passer rating has gone up every year he’s been in the league and Cutler’s passer rating has dropped each year.

Well, sorry to make a case for JC (in comparison to Cutler) in this thread.
If you said these EXACT same things elsewhere then I’m sorry I didn’t say “Don’t forget that DbacksSkins has been saying that Cutler isn’t that much better than JC!” Then done a search for your comments and added a link to them.
Really dude, chill out. You’re not the only one with those ideas and it’s not exactly an “identical post” when someone writes a comment that has similar ideas to yours.

It doesn't matter
because the handpicked stats that you both outlined are misleading and out of context. When you look at the whole picture, Jay Cutler was, is, and always will be a better QB.

They're not misleading,
nor are they out of context. Are they cherrypicked? Absolutely.

Not as sick as we are
of reading the same half-brained homer bologna about Cutler not being a better QB and upgrade for the Washington Redskins that he would have been.
Campbell is definitely a likable guy and I sincerely hope he succeeds. But when we are inevitably in that comeback situation where we need our QB to step up, remember this:
Last year, in the 4th quarter (where games are won or lost) Jay Cutler had 11 TD passes and 4 INTs, while Jason Campbell had 4 TD passes and 2 INTs.
Sad, but true.

Similar to the QB he replaced, Jake "the Snake" Plummer.

I think a big plus about not getting Cutler (aside from keeping all those picks the Skins would have had to give up) is the Colt Brennan angle.
If JC doesn’t show continued improvement this coming season, Brennan should be set to get a fair shot at the starting spot in 2010. Had Cutler been here, I would assume a mediocre or worse 2009 season would be blamed on “getting used to a different system.” Consequently, Cutler would be given a pass and Brennan would be tossing a coin with Todd Collins to see who gets the third QB spot in 2010.
Not that I’m assuming Brennan is our QB savior, but I sure as hell am intrigued, as I think many of us Skins fans are, about our late round QB draft pick.

Brennan
played in the Run ‘N’ Shoot in college, just like the Hawai’i QB before him, Timmy Chang. Where is Timmy Chang? Well, I hear he is tearing it up in the CFL.

I’m not calling Brennan the Skins’ QB savior, I’m just saying it’s more likely he gets an honest chance out of this.
Besides, just because Brennan and Chang came out of the same system it doesn’t mean that they’re the same player. Brennan’s college TD-INT ratio was much better (3.1 vs. 1.5) and, of what I remember, Chang had a much better O-line than Brennan. Once again, I’m certainly not making a case for Brennan to start, I’m just pointing out that the comparison to Chang is misleading.
by superjuan on Apr 3, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't say the comparison is misleading.
Oversimplified, perhaps…. Timmy Chang sets the NCAA Div 1 record for TDs, then a few years later, his successor at Hawai’i, running the exact same system, breaks said record.
I think Colt Brennan is a better QB now and I think he was a better QB in college, as well. I just wanna warn people to take Brennan’s college performances with a grain of salt — just as we take his preseason performance last year against 3rd string defenses with a grain of salt.

A little honesty
I’ve been on board with JC17 since the start, let him finish the last year of his contract.
He is the typical Joe Gibbs QB, very cautious with the ball, plays to not lose games and can through an exceptional long ball. Zorn is changing these traits with the his offense, so while it was just another offense to learn for JC17, changing the traits will take a little longer. I believe he has it him and I am starting to believe with the deals made and NOT made the Redskins can be a major factor this year.
The defense should challenge for the top spot and the offense should be able to score 10-21 points per game, that a great combination, with some great opportunities…
