Question:
Can anyone give me some reasons why an OT can’t play Guard?
I know that they have different roles. The mechanics necessary to play G might be a little different. But, it just seems to me that a guy like Jansen could transition to G and possibly back up Thomas (if we can draft an OT or Heyer outplays Jansen in preseason).
Obviously, there is more involved with transitioning from G to OT. A Guard may not have the athleticism or footwork to play OT. But it seems plausible that an OT could adjust and that would also explain why you don’t often see a pure Guard taken in the 1st Round.

as far as I know
…being a guard requires being quicker, probably more athletic, and playing with a lower center of gravity. That’s why guards are generally shorter players, whereas tackles are the big 6’6" behemoths.
That’s not to say that OTs can’t convert to guard, but someone like Jansen who’s been struggling with quickness and athleticism to begin with, doesn’t strike me as a good candidate for OG.
Does anyone want to buy
a football autographed by every member of the 1962 Washington Redskins team?
The bid starts at $250…

I saw this last night and it made no sense.....
Doctors told Thomas he could end up paralyzed if he was tackled the wrong way during the Redskins’ final stretch,
http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/04/16/redskins-guard-thomas-risked-it-all/
I understand Thomas wanted to play. Football players play with crazy injuries to try to stay in the game. If it was me though I wouldnt of risked being paralyzed for a football game.
Im really quite shocked the Redskins team doctors/coaching staff didnt place him on IR. Teams shouldnt risk a players future for a football game. Thats when the team doctors should of said you know what we know you want to play but it isnt worth taking that chance on you being paralyzed for the rest of your life.

Over-Cautious
What else could the doctors say? He had a slipped disc in his neck.
A Doctor could tell anyone playing in the NFL, that if they are tackled or hit wrong they could end up Paralyzed, obviously someone with a slipped disc has a slightly higher chance then normal but IMO the risk precentage was not that much greater.
More so the performance level was significantly effected and figure Thomas was playing at 70-80% and was still the starter, no one was able to perform better and take the position. This is the lack of depth created by Snyder and the front office by signing the big names. All the eggs in one basket can work but more times than not something goes wrong, here’s to nothing going wrong this year.
I know anyone can be paralyzed on the football field in a freak accident. Thats common knowledge. Im just saying if a doctor is telling you for a fact if your hit a certain way you could end of paralyzed it would lead me to believe he shouldnt of been on the field. Honestly its kinda sad a team would risk a players ability to walk just to win some games.

Question is at what point or should it be zero
If it’s a 1% chance it could happen, 10% or 50% chance, I’m just saying it’s not a given that the chance being taken is so extraordinary. The doctor would have to say it’s a chance if it were 0.5% increase over normal situations, without details which will never be forthcoming, it’s pointless to either blame the team for letting someone play or for “praising” a player for playing hurt.
Im not blaming the team per say. I just think if there was a greater risk he could be paralyzed by playing in a football game he shouldnt of played. Maybe you are right and the risk wasnt that high. It just seems that any increased risk should have resulted in him being placed on IR imo.

AND THEN...
maybe we could have seen whether or not Rinehart was ready for the NFL or not…

and again
The real concern, with the decision to allow Thomas to keep playing. Rinehart not being good enough or the front office not trusting him enough. At times it appears to lean more on the front office not trusting the players to be PLAYERS! Just like the start of last year, 2 DE go down and instead of playing with the players available, and adding depth the Front office jumped out and got Jason Taylor. (hind-sight)
Jason Taylor get’s hurt, the back-up players are able to perform to a level to have the Redskins Defensive in the Top-5…Jason Campbell, same situation.
It’s time to trust the team assembled and stop looking “at the greener grass”
In hindsight the Skins shouldnt of traded for Taylor. I liked the move last year even though I was a little nervous about us giving up 2nd (09) and 6th (10) rd picks. We lost two DEs during the first day of Training Camp and the need was there. Taylor alongside Carter looked like a great combo for a couple seasons. I think if Taylor didnt have those injuries he would of played alot better last season. His performance week 16 was a huge factor in the Skins winning that game vs the Eagles.
I had a feeling in January Taylor would be cut and he would sign with the Pats and move to OLB. When we got Haynesworth a little over a month later I was hoping we would keep Taylor but it wasnt in the cards. Watch him end up signing with the Pats and having 10+ sacks.

Point
And maybe it had to be done because the players wouldn’t have believed the defense could play well enough. The Elite teams build from within, not all through the draft but coaching players in the team’s system and executing the system, mismatching players to systems and systems to players will not win Superbowls.
…mismatching players to systems and systems to players will not win Superbowls.
Good point. Jason Taylor was a career, natural RDE who used his speed and athleticism for the pass rush. We brought him in and expected him to run block at LDE. It was doomed from the beginning. Even when he was healthy, his contributions were too few and far between.
However, it would have been nice to see how much better he would have played with Haynesworth, even at LDE.
