Why it (really) sucks to root for the Washington Redskins!

I have been a die-hard Redskin fan since I was 7.  Out of all the other teams that I root for, my love affair with the hogs have been the longest.  That's why it hurt me about a month ago when everything came into full view:

Dan Snyder has made a fortune from owning my beloved team.  And he (and only he) is the only one who has benefited from his "reign of error."

I wrote an honest, heartfelt column for my blog a couple of weeks back.  I'm asking you guys to read it and let me know if you (honestly) feel the same way.

Keith

What?

Ok, I breezed through the rantings, but exactly how does it suck to be a Redskin’s Fan?
Three Superbowls and Philly has none…All it’s since Daniel Snyder took over. Yes, the owner who tries to buy a Superbowl each and every year, who continues to attempt to field a team which has a better than average chance of making the playoffs each year. Yes, he has screwed up, made mistakes, and still does stupid things such as go after “name” QBs but he is trying and in painfully slow process is learning how to build a team. Better to be a fan of Detroit, Raiders or maybe the Cowboys cause they obviously are better run organizations. I will forever be a Redskins fan and don’t ever think it sucks, try being a Baltimore O’s fan that’s an owner who has ruined a once historic franchise by not trying…better to try then to not!

First of all,

let me just say that I did actually read every word of your novel… err… I mean, blog post.

It sounds like I’ve been a die-hard Skins’ fanatic for roughly the same amount of time as you. I definitely feel your pain. I am a season ticket holder, and one thing I want to add is that even IF you are a season ticket holder, you still have to get on a list to buy a parking pass. The worst part of buying season tickets is, as you mentioned, the inclusion of the 2 preseason games. Hopefully, the NFL will get rid of at least one of those preseason games and extend the regular season.

A lot of people are comparing this year’s offseason acquisitions to the past offseason big $ signings. I don’t think the comparison is justified. In the past, we overpaid for guys like Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders who were past their primes. Haynesworth and Hall have been brought in at their peaks and still have plenty of incentive to be even greater. As long as we are able to continually beat the salary cap and bring in the talent year in and year out, I’m OK with it.

You referenced “all the money he’s making off the fans,” and yet “every game is a sellout and the waiting list for season tickets is somewhere between 15 – 20 years.” Shouldn’t it be the goal of every business to be successful and profitable? It’s not like Snyder has over-priced himself out of the market if people are waiting that long to buy his product.

We, as impatient fans, have a tendency to expect the same success that the current / recent winning franchises are having. But that is unrealistic. I say that knowing that I am as impatient as they come when we lose to inferior teams, and I struggle to not want to see heads roll after those losses. To win in the NFL requires so many pieces to fall into place and timing is critical. So is a little bit of luck.

I’ll take an owner who is willing and able to spend whatever it takes to win ANY DAY! As long as he knows his role and let’s his people do their job. At least he’s not micromanaging like JJ in Little D does. And at least Snyder has made the Washington Redskins one of the most profitable sports franchises in the world! Maybe it will all come back around when we finally move back to D.C. and build the ‘Taj Mahal’ of all sports’ stadiums right along the Metro…

Snyder has made bad decisions most of the time since hes been our owner (1999). At the sametime he spends the money yearly for us to compete. No matter how much I hate Snyder I like him more than alot of these other owners who dont care and try to save money yearly. Snyder tries to win and has the best interest of the Skins at heart and puts up the greenbacks yearly to prove it.

If he would hire a real GM and stay out of the roster moves he would probably be the best Owner in the league hands down. Hes still top 5 either way though. Just think of how much money he has spent since his first full offseason (2000) to try to win a Super Bowl. Thats dedication.

RIP Sean Taylor (1983-2007)

Yeah, I don't get this either

Being a Cowboys fan, it’s hard to fault an owner like Dan or Jerry, who will do almost ANYTHING to make their teams a winner. Granted, they can sometimes be their own worst enemy, but I wouldn’t trade places with fans of teams with owners who pinch pennies and rob the fans of an exciting, competitive product on the field.

"Well, we didn't block real good but we made up for it by not tackling."
