Skins Likely Are Showing Interest in Cutler

Jason Reid, beat writer for the Redskins for Washington Post, reported on Comcast Sportsnite just now the latest on the Redskins/Cutler situation. It looks like this may happen. Key quotes:

- Redskins Park was silent today when in the past they were vocal about having no interest in Cutler.

- Snyder has always been vocal about acquiring a franchise Quarterback. One has never been available, but there is now.

- Sources say that Denver wants to send Cutler to the NFC, and they do have interest in Campbell and the #13 pick.

I tried to youtube the video, but it failed. You can watch the full interview here.

The more I roam around the blogs...............

The more i think that were also dangling somebody else other than campbell out there. Of course i havent heard this from any TV source but i’m just nervous about them trading away a Landry or that caliber.

Oh hell no

Not Landry. I bought the jersey in December and you can’t even imagine the months of turmoil over “how can I possibly wear that name on my back” I went through before pulling the trigger.

Landry would cost

the Redskins $6-7 million in dead cap space by trading him (Cooley would cost even more).

Landry ain’t going anywhere.

Im mixed on this

on one hand, we need to win now. We need that #13 draft pick to bolster the offensive line or the pass rush. On the other hand, we could be getting a franchise quarterback for the next 10+ years or so. As much as I like JC, nobody here can say he’s really brought it yet. Sure, he’s had flashes of greatness but he hasn’t really shown us he can carry an offense. Also, if they do trade for Cutler, Zorn must have some say in it no? If the “QB Genius” doesn’t trust JC why should we question him?
Again, I’m against this move just because I really believe our pass rush is going to be putrid this year (even with Haynesworth) and I want to win now, but it truly wouldnt be the worst move in the world. There’s a reason why 10 other teams are scrambling to get him and they all have as many holes as us.

It seems like we

have the best offer out of everyone. No other team has a QB with Campbell’s pedigree. And by offering our 1st rounder, that means Denver could draft @ 12 & 13 ! If they aren’t confident with Campbell, they could probably get Sanchez (the only NCAA QB who actually ran an NFL-style offense), and Maualuga (or whoever drops to 12/13).

Here's an interesting tidbit from ESPN
In games where the Broncos have allowed 21 points or fewer, Cutler is an impressive 13-1, and that only loss was to Green Bay in 2007 when the Packers won the coin toss and Brett Favre threw an 82-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime.

Granted we don’t have a Brandon Marshall, but imagine what he could do with the best defense in the league.

Fair compensation would be

JC and our 1st rounder, and a conditional pick next year. Really, the first two are fair, but a 3rd that can escalate to a 1st dependent on a monster season would help. I would be quite comfortable trading Moss or ARE + an additional mid-range guy like that to save a pick. I would cry if we gave up anyone on our stellar defense, its exactly what we need to help Cutler further exceed the average QB play around the league, and especially in Washington. Long have I wanted to be rid of Portis, send him and JC to denver with our 2nd rounder for Cutler and a 4/5th rounder. Saves cap space and allows us to work our late-round draft gem magic. Denver’s D-Line is abysmal, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they got one of our DTs-I say Griff, he’s the most expensive. But will likely be one of our younger guys.

Are you kidn me????

THis goes to show you that Cerratto and Synder have no clue how to build a winning football team. You have more serious issues than QB and now you want to give away another draft pick with the few you have? Most everyone knows that A QB CAN NOT THROW A FOOTBALL WHEN HE IS ON HIS BACK. The Skins will not make the Superbowl this year with a QB with a rocket arm and a stud Defensive tackle alone. Why can’t pople see how Cerratto and Synder are flying by the seat of their pants and have no clue. They are the laughing stock of the league. Campbell has not been given enough time, nor the weapons to succeed. Take the time to instill youth and talent on the offensive and defensive lines before accessing the QB situation, do a better job accessing talent for draft picks. I can’t believe people think this trade is a good idea. This will not get us to the promise land. We have too many weaknesses so build through the draft. Every year we waste picks , spend for 1 big name player while other positions falter do to age and mediocracy so we have to address that position the following year. The thing is each year we have more and more holes to fill. This is a vicous cycle and will get us nowhere. Just look at the history of the team since Synder took over. Look at the championship teams over the past few years, Patriots,Steelers, Giants, they have the recipe for building a team, but Cerratto and Synder are too inept to follow. I say trade Synder and Cerratto for Belichick and Kraft. Then you will see results.

by A Connecticut Redskin on Apr 2, 2009 9:16 AM EDT reply actions

You forgot to mention the Colts....

All of these teams have a stud QB running the show. The easiest way to build a winning team is to build it around a stud QB. There are otherways too, like the 2000 Ravens…but most of the SB winners feature a great QB. I like JC, but he has a long release, never throws the ball away (38 sacks! not all on poor o-line play), and he waits for the receiver to get open before throwing the ball (his release is too slow for this approach, thus more sacks and fumbles). Cutler does all of these things better than JC. I’m for giving JC one more year and I’m mixed on getting Cutler. If we do get Cutler then we better win or all hell will break loose.

by liger99 on Apr 2, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

No,

the easiest way to build a winning team is to build it around good offensive and defensive lines. They’re the ones who make everything happen on their respective sides of the ball.

Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.

by DbacksSkins on Apr 2, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

But like you said, we don’t know if Cutler is a stud QB nor do we know if Campbell can’t be a stud QB and a good offensive line can make a good QB a Suberbowl winning QB along with other pieces. In addition, why risk the health and Psyche of a QB behind a bad O-line? Peyton was an anomalie he was bred for the job. His brother is a prime example of why you need a good O-line along with a good running game and an elite receiver to win a Superbowl. He was questioned severly before he won his Superbowl.

by A Connecticut Redskin on Apr 2, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

You need a franchise QB

but that’s far from all you need.

Snyder + Brady/Manning/Roeth would not equal an annual contender. it wouldn’t even equal one championship.

by smutsboy1 on Apr 2, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Would the Skins have lost to...

CIN, SF, and STL last year with Peyton running the show? I doubt it. The salary cap has leveled the playing field so much that QB play is more emphasized…one or two mistakes or key plays by the QB can determine the outcome of games. In the past you could more easily build an overall solid team and win it….like the Skins SB teams. The Steelers won this year without a good o-line…they traded their best OL player, Faneca, to the Jets, but still won. Cards got good play from Warner…didn’t the skins beat them? Ravens added Flacco and lost Ogden and made it to the title game from 5-11. Miami added Pennington and won 10 more games (1-15 to 11-5). Ryan played well for ATL, turned them around along with Turnner and coaching. Brady got hurt and they lost 5 more games than the prior year. This is just IMO, and I agree that overall team play is best. I just think it is more difficult now than in the past to have a team without holes somewhere…and a stud QB can compensate for the holes.

by liger99 on Apr 2, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

There's a huge difference

…between ‘having holes somewhere’ and what the Redskins are.

We have no depth, an offensive line full of 30 year olds, we basically haven’t been restocking with talented youth at all, we have one of the worst WR corps in the league, and we’re about to start 2 or 3 of the following players: HB Blades, Philip Daniels & JonJan.

You take the elite QBs off the Big 3, give them a mediocre player like JC has been (so far) and those teams are miles ahead of us.

Miles.

by smutsboy1 on Apr 2, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I would not say Miles ahead...

Pats went from 16-0 to 11-5 without Brady….big slide. CLE 10-6 to 4-12, Miami +10 wins, seems like things can change in a hurry now. The Skins did beat the two NFC title game teams last year. The NFC seems pretty wide open to me. We could crash/burn or make a SB run. IMO there are 1-2 really good teams and 1-2 really bad teams, with the rest in the middle somewhere. A few plays can put a middle team into the playoffs where a run is possible….see 2007 NGY and 2008 ARZ..and 2008 PIT.

You simply can’t win without stockpiling picks so that you have affordable talent to fill out your depth chart and your starting roster alongside your star players.

Sarcasm

What they should do is keep drafting and signing QB’s, DB’s, WR’s, and moody RB’s and forget that every championship team in the history of the league had a great lineplay.

Great lineplay makes bad RB’s look good, it makes bad QB’s like Mark Rypien into NFL MVP’s. It doesn’t matter how good a QB is, without a line, his team won’t win. Period. You can ignore the fact that Cutler hasn’t exactly proven to be a world beater. His career QB rating is about where Campbells is and he has thrown about twice the picks that Campbell has.

Idiotic and boggling

like trying to put band-aids instead of stitches on a stab wound… Instead of 6ft under they’ve managed to be only about 3 feet under!! I don’t really get it… These guys played in the same conference in college (auburn and Vandy) at about the same time. They put up similar numbers agains same defenses (granted- Campbell had a little more of a supporting cast at the time)… I just don’t see Cutler being that MUCH of an upgrade. He will be in a much more aggresive (defensive) division and struggle with a new offense (although be it similar- but there is always growing/adaption pains).

I hope he comes in here and proves me wrong- but as of right now- I JUST DON’T GET IT!!
