Redskins off season moves

Is this the year that the Washington Redskins finally put together a winning team and move forward thru the NFC East. The door is open.

  1. Dallas w/o T.O. means we get to see how average Tony "Loverboy" Romo really is.
  2. Philly is old and missed their chance
  3. The Giants arent really that good and they have major off the field issues.
  4. Same coaches 2 years in a row for The Almighty Skins when was the last time that happened.

Who should they draft to take advantage of this situation. My say is Percy Harvin out of Florida this guy would be a game changer and much needed burst to the special teams as well.  Percyharvin_medium

Percy Harvin?

I’m ok with that if he switches to OL or LB. Drafting a WR with our only 1st DAY pick after drafting 3 receivers w/ our first 3 picks last year doesn’t make much sense to me. Strong Lines win championships. Lineman!!

Thank you.

Why were the Redskins so dominant in the ‘80s and early ’90’s? Because of great linemen like Joe Jacoby, Russ Grimm, Jeff Bostic, Jim Lachey, Mark May, Dexter Manley, Charles Mann, etc. Not to take anything away from Riggins, Monk and Clark, but the game was first won in the trenches which then allowed for the skill players to do their thing.

That’s why I am a little concerned about the NY Midgets defense. They’ve been stockpiling a fantasy defensive roster while we are still figuring out who’s going to start! NYG will be able to rotate defensive players in and out, staying fresh and healthy. They will probably be our toughest divisional opponent.

Percy Harvin has looked pretty impressive though. He reminds of Reggie Bush alot. If he could be used as a WR/RB and the coaches have lost hope in Kelly or Thomas, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Snyderrato made a shocker pick like that…

They will probably be our toughest divisional opponent.

Now gee…. they only won the division this year and the Super Bowl last year… whyever would you think that? :-P

Because

at this point, they still don’t have Plax back. Late in the season without him, they clearly struggled not having that double team demand on Burress.

by VA_Skin on Mar 24, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

They're still

the most complete, and the “best” team in the division, even without Plax.

most complete... "best" team?!?!

I guess my expectations are alot higher than yours (even though you just posted a blog pretty much demanding that everyone STFU and put their eggs in ‘your boy’ Campbell’s basket).

I expect the Washington Redskins to have the best team in the NFC East.

We just added Haynesworth to an already top 5 defense which means that this coming year we should be competing for the # 1 Defense.

With the addition of Dockery and the improvement of Heyer and Rinehart, our offensive line should be younger and more durable (not to mention the possibility of a drafted OT).
Our WR/TE draft picks from last year should begin to pay dividends this year as they grow and progress under Zorn.

And I already know that you consider Jason Campbell the answer to all of our prayers at QB so how are the NY Midgets going to be the “best team” in the NFC East again?!?!

by VA_Skin on Mar 24, 2009 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Better offense,

better playoff experience, better depth across the roster, better head coach, better kicking/punting game, better overall defensive line. (Even with Haynesworth)

All I’m going to say is that I think your predictions are slightly Pollyannaish, and I NEVER said that Jason Campbell was “the answer to all of our prayers at QB”. I just said that he was comparable to Jay Cutler, and that it’s certainly not particularly worth trading for Cutler.

The Steelers had the #1 defense in the league last year, holding their opponents to an incredible 237.2 yards per game. #2, the Ravens, was all the way up at 261.1 The Redskins allowed 288.8. (Incidentally, the Giants were #5 at 292.0) Do you REALLY think the addition of Albert Haynesworth, plus a full season of DeAngelo Hall and nothing from Marcus Washington or Shawn Springs, is going to shave 50 yards per game from the Redskins’ 2009 opponents??

I think I’m going to decline to be baited by the other sarcastic remarks.

Now...

if we can just NOT allow those long passes at the end of the game with 30 seconds left to set up those mother loving game winning field goals, those 288.8 yards allowed per game might actually mean something to me!!!!

And I personally think that adding those pieces can possibly shave 50 yards off the opponents total per game. The reason why is because with Haynesworth and Hall, the offense will find A LOT more playing time due to turnovers (hopefully), which will add to our total playing time (hopefully), and decrease their playing time (hopefully). So it’s feasible that it could happen.

WoW

A lot of HOPEFULLY in that statement, cannot disagree with anything but go ahead and change HOPFULLY to “IF” only 2 letters and the Redskins always have a lot of “IF” going into the season.
IF everyone stays healthy the defense should be one of the best next year.
IF the 2nd year WR step up and play to the level expected the Offense should improve significantly.
IF….

This

really depends on the continued development of our offense…

Better offense?

How will NYG have better offense with no Plax and no Eli (who will be on IR after Haynesworth crushes him)?

Shawn Springs can’t play a whole season healthy anyway and Marcus Washington will probably return (along with Phillip Daniels hopefully).

I can explain why my expectations for the Redskins aren’t “Pollyannaish,” but actually quite reasonable and logically optimistic, and put this debate to rest with these 3 words:

Strength of schedule.

by VA_Skin on Mar 25, 2009 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

"strength of schedule"?

The Redskins and Giants will play the exact same teams next year, except for two. Every NFL team plays 6 games within their division, 4 games against a rotating division in the NFC and 4 games against a rotation division in the AFC — those are all opponents that teams within a division share. Do the math: that’s 14 games already reserved, meaning “strength of schedule” only determines two matchups.

How will NYG have better offense with no Plax and no Eli (who will be on IR after Haynesworth crushes him)?

Yes, the Giants might not have the better offense without Eli — but that’s a dumb statement. It’s like saying the ‘Skins would have a worse offense without Portis. Giants have a better runningback, better offensive line, and a more refined and less predictable offensive scheme. If the Giants trade for Boldin, then all bets are off. There’d be no comparison with the ‘Skins — and ’Tana’s brother already looks like the real deal.

Springs really can’t play a full season healthy, but when he’s healthy, he’s been our best cover corner. (Especially against TO) The ‘Skins resigned Hall, so barring them taking a DB in the draft, they’re going into next season with the exact same secondary personnel — except Springs, which means they’re elevating some practice squad scrub to replace the defensive downs that Springs would have played. Even if there are few of those due to injury, it’s still going to be a net downgrade.

The whole Eli thing

was meant to be in jest (even though we do still owe them 1 for what LT did to Theisman).
With the addition of Haynesworth, I believe Eli’s time span to throw the ball will be reduced 25-50%. They can’t stop Haynesworth one-on-one, and guess what type of DE Carter is (and his backup Wilson)? The pass rushing type of DE. So they will use their TEs for extra blocking? Well, now our LBs can focus on the pass rush.

I feel completely comfortable with shutdown Rogers (who just needs to learn how to catch the ball) and playmaker Hall. With the reduced window of time to pass, they can bump their WR at the line and not have to cover the whole route all of the time. Its the same formula the Giants have used with less talented corners then ours.

IMO, our defense is more complete. All of the Giants’ talent on defense is stacked at the line, whereas now our talent on defense isn’t just in the secondary, but also on the line as well.

by VA_Skin on Mar 26, 2009 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Not all their defensive talent is on the DL.

Remember? They’ve got AP, too.

Here are their 2009 opponents...

I left off the obvious division opponents and highlighted the different teams they play.

Redskins Regular Season Opponents for 2009

AWAY: Carolina, Atlanta, Detroit, San Diego, Oakland

Giants Regular Season Opponents for 2009

HOME: Atlanta, Carolina, Oakland, San Diego, Arizona
AWAY: New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Denver, Kansas City, Minnesota

The schedule will be released in April 2009.

None...

except that Al Davis is a senile old coot.

3 out of 4 ain't bad

Good points you make, except one. The Giants ARE that good. Especially now that they have added more beef to already stout defense. I hate to say it, because I cannot stand them. They have officially passed the Eagle on my hate-o-meter. The Eagles are old, but are still dangerous, but I think that we can win both games against them this year. We have a legitimate chance of going 4-2 in our division this year, which would be fantastic. And I think that Percy would be a great pick as well, but I think we should focus on a young OL instead. Samuels is getting up there in age, and we need someone that, whoever is in the backfield, they can rely on to get past. Having that speed would be nice though…

by CSGOLF on Mar 24, 2009 11:25 AM EDT reply actions

+1 with CSGOLF

The Giants defense is going to be scary, as well as the Redskins but it will come down to the offense. NY has shown it can, Washington has not.
Dallas, continues to implode both on offense and defense
Phila, we be up and down all year and will be 8-8 or 9-7 again, thing is when they do make the playoffs they are able to do what is required to get to the NFC Championship game.
Percy would be a good pickup but it just can’t or shouldn’t happen. Redskins did pickup 2 speed backs and hopefully will look at using them on Kickoffs and punt returns.
