Albert Hanesworth. I don’t think he’ll have motivation to play hard w/out a contract. Plus I’m still pissed about Danna Stubblefield.

DeAngelo agrees to terms

According to RI:

The CB has agreed to a deal worth a maximum of $55 million over 6 years, according to league sources. He will receive roughly $23 million guaranteed.

I hope this means we dump Springs and kiss Carlos’ ass so he wants to play here a while longer.

How do you guys feel about Canty?

NFL.Com's blog is way faster

at updating the FA action. Adam Schefter is the best NFL insider by far. I don’t like Carlos, he’s not consistant and can’t catch a cold.

My plan: Trade Rodgers for picks, try Smoot out at starting CB, cut Sprngs or move him to Saftey.

Ugh

Obviously not shocked but…why Danny, why?? Does Haynesworth protect the Quarterback? Does Haynesworth open holes for CP? There can’t possibly be money left to sign Dock or any other Off. lineman with experience. This is like dumping your entire savings account into a brand new car stereo when the fucking car won’t even start.

Good thing the letters have already been sent saying ‘09 season tickets won’t be increasing in price.

by ReggieBullits on Feb 27, 2009 9:40 AM EST reply actions

Offense averaged close to 14 points

The defense is being built to not allow any scoring, Danny gave up on trying to fix the offense and went head over heels to make the defense #1.

by dr WNC on Feb 27, 2009 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

And that's a good thing?

Well that’s just a brilliant move by him isn’t it? Hire an offensive head coach and then “give up on trying to fix the offense”. Brilliant. Skins offense was outscored by every team in the league but Oakland, Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, and Cincinnati, but let’s dump all the money into the defense. Brilliant. Zorn is doomed.

The defense was fine the way it was. #4 in the league. Gave up 18.5 points per game in ‘08. I’m not saying that Haynesworth doesn’t immediately improve the defense, but I’m saying that it’s obvious to everyone but Snyder apparently that the offensive line is where the real money needed to be spent, and whether or not that happens remain to be seen. But dumping $41 million guaranteed on one D-lineman isn’t a good start.

You know AH will be a force in the NFC East…this is not the the AFC North where they do not spend any money. If the owners do not extend the CBA, then next year is uncapped allowing the skins to outbid your poor dock and steel worker ass. The steelers of the 70’s were all on roids, so those SB wins do not count.

DeAngelo played well here

But of course you have to question his motivation. I like that signing better then Big Al’s.

by ReggieBullits on Feb 27, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sure he will get hurt and miss games, but...

Titans were 20-5 last two years when he played and 1-5 without him. I will wait and see if we over-paid or not. He does dominate when he plays, which is a huge change from all of the other DS signings over the years. They need to draft OL now and I’ll be more than happy with the offseason.

by liger99 on Feb 27, 2009 12:35 PM EST reply actions

Should this be a concern?
Although the Redskins and Titans run the 4-3 defense, there will be a transition for Haynesworth. In Greg Blache’s scheme, the defensive linemen are expected to play disciplined against the run by taking up blockers and letting the linebackers shoot the gaps. Tennessee’s system allowed Haynesworth to be aggressive at the snap, which accounted for his sack total.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/feb/27/redskins-sign-haynesworth/?page=2
I’m guessing not…but look at Jason Taylor, when he was healthy he struggled with this scheme and was even vocal about it not being his style.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Feb 27, 2009 1:15 PM EST reply actions

Taylor

also was forced to switch to the other side of the line. Playing against the right OT and playing against the left OT are two very different propositions — different styles required with each.

Skins Beat out 6 teams for Haynesworth

Is anyone buying this? I can’t imagine any other teams coming close to this amount of millions. Sure, we won, but how many millions less could Snyder have won him with?

by Kevin Ewoldt on Feb 27, 2009 2:58 PM EST reply actions

Heard he took less from the skins

On Mike and Mike in the morning…..TB had offered more. I’m not sure why he would take less to come here unless Danny promised to cut and re-sign him if next year (and 2011) is uncapped. He would get paid twice that way. Beer price is now $12.

DeAngelo Hall

Let’s not gloss over the very real chance that he is at least partially a head-case. My thoughts though:
1) He behaved in his 7-game audition for us (and had 2 pickles)
2) Oakland will bring out the worst in any player…especially one who wants to win (let him prove that for us now)
3) In Atlanta…wasn’t he ABSOLUTELY RIGHT? I mean, Petrino was a total d-bag. He alienated players, had no clue how to handle that team, and then up and quit on the whole franchise. Now, maybe you don’t go about it the way DeAngelo did when he was there, but come on…he might have been dead on. And if he knew he was right all along, that had to have driven him nuts, which is, consequently, exactly how he acted.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Feb 27, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

More turnovers and more sacks

They will not have to go 80 yards every time to score. This helps the O big time. Last year the skins had to put 10 play drives to gether in order to score. Was the Ravens Offense better than the Skins last year? Hell no. But they scored 120 points more. 120! The Skins had lots of trouble overcoming a sack or holding call or dropped pass…that always killed a drive. They had to be pretty much perfect for 10 plays in a row to get points. This way they may need to go 5-6 plays for points. With the WC offense you get short 5 yard plays at a time…sometimes they hit a big play, but not the skins last year. This helps the O and don’t tell me that the Ravens scored defensive tds to increase their numbers….that would be making my point. They need to draft OL now or get Dock back.

by liger99 on Feb 27, 2009 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

huh?!?!
don’t tell me that the Ravens scored defensive tds to increase their numbers

How can I not say this? Redskins had ZERO Tds and Ravens had 6! That’s a big difference. We are keeping our corners and safeties from last year. We had 13 INTs to the Ravens…26!! These two D’s are not comparable. Turnovers mean everything.

To say that our 2 D’s were the same is completely absurd. I agree with you 100% field position should be better…but even as Zorn said…when we did get to the good side of the 50-yard line, we stalled. If you want to make the point that Haynesworth will free up the DEs to rush the QB into stupider passes, and thus more INTs…then I could agree. A lot of IFs there though.

with becoming an elite defense? We certainly weren’t amazing last year and this might put us over the top. Also, how could they improve their offense in the off season? They already got dockery what more should they do?

….hwoever knows the Washington cap Staus this queston. The were 8 mil under when free agency began. The released spring which makes 14 mil. They singed haynesworth to 13 a year….that makes 1 under. Hall to 8 mil a year….thats 7 over and Docerky to 5 thats 12 over……I say good job on the signing of Dockery. Who will you guys cut to get that 12 mi covered?

by BennieBladesFan on Feb 28, 2009 7:43 AM EST reply actions

Depends how the deals are structured.

The guaranteed portion of the contract is the only prorated part. I am deeply skeptical that Haynseworth costs the Redskins 14M in cap his first year. You backload these contracts so that the amounts of salary are much higher in the later years, typically.

It’ll be interesting to see these contracts since the players and their agents should essentially assume that 2011 won’t have NFL fooball. It wouldn’t make financial sense for an agent/player to go into negotiations assuming the CBA will get settled, and if it doesn’t the owners will more than likely lockout 2011. So the players, throughout this free agency, are probably going to lean towards as much guaranteed money as they want. I really want to see Y2 of Haynesworth’s contract, since that is the uncapped year.

But to answer your question, we won’t need to cut 12M dollars of players, but we will need to cut someone. Just because a contract averages X amount per year doesn’t mean it costs X per year. The earlier years are typically much lower than the later ones.

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Feb 28, 2009 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

Although I should...

given the CBA issue these contracts probably won’t be “typical”. So they might not be AS backloaded as contracts in the past. I’d like to see Haynesworth’s contract.

Go register. Or else.

doesn't matter

I don’t think we have to cut anybody. I think your numbers are off. We were well under after retructuring 4 contracts and releasing Washington and Springs. Also, Daniels contract voide out at midnight.

Guess they’re counting on 2nd year RB Tony Hunt (Penn State) to fill in when (not if) Westbrook goes down. Or maybe they’ll be grabbing a RB in the later rounds. You have to think they’ll go WR early in the draft again this year.
