Plack cut, Carter & ARE restructured/extended.
Thought you guys might be interested in getting away from hypotheticals and discuss stuff that's actually happening with the team.
From JLC at RI, so proceed with caution.
I have zero ability to speak intelligently about the salary cap implications of these restructured contracts, so I'm hoping this FanPost can serve as an educate ReggieBullits as well.
My initial reaction is to freak the fug out and question why the F.O. has extended ARE to 2015 (I like Carter, and think he could be a force with some semblance of talent lining up on the other end, but the thought of him as a Redskin in 2015 is a bit frightening as well).
I understand the need to get under the cap for 2009 and therefore understand the need to restructure contracts (that much I do know), but why in the hell does it have to be for so long. I mean, DaVinnie can't really be relying on ARE as the future of the franchise....right?
Cutting Plack is a head-scratcher as well. He at least showed potential in the 2nd Philthy game.

It's heavily backloaded with deferred money.
We’ll be paying Carter and ARE well after they retire or move on, and we’ll probably restructure one or both contracts again down the road. (Unless the salary cap really DOES disappear after 2010) I guess this puts to rest any notion of trading ARE. I’ve always liked him, but I think we could do better with a real #2 receiver.
Cutting Plack is just STUPID — unless we’ve got someone else in mind who we KNOW is better.

I don't look at ARE as a #2.
He is really best suited as a #3 receiver, imo. We need someone (recent draft pick maybe) to step up and take the spot lining up with Moss. ARE is great coming out of the slot, and we should use him that way.

Well,
we originally signed ARE and traded for ahem Rap Superstar Brandon Lloyd to compete for the #2 receiver spot — let’s just forget about Lloyd and talk about the fact that ARE just isn’t a #2. As you mention, he’s a #3 — he does best coming out of the slot.

So, we agree.
Which of our 2nd round picks from last year steps up to fill that big body receiver role/#2 this year, in your opinion??
I honestly didn’t see enough from either of them to be able to predict this. I just hope it is someone.

Anquan Boldin.
Yeah, I haven’t seen enough either.
Early on, I thought it would be Devin, but then JLC seemed to think later in the season that Malcolm had more potential down the road — then towards the end, I started thinking it was Devin again. I get the feeling that Malcolm might be injured for his entire career.
Luckily, we only have to be 50% right with the wideouts — but I’m already thinking that Fred Davis is a bust, so it would really suck if somehow NONE of our 2nd round receivers panned out.
Maybe then The Danny would realize that Vinny is a HORRIBLE judge of talent, which is why he was run outta town by the 49ers. Look, Danny, keep Vinny as your racquetball partner, but please, SIGN A REAL GM.

Extending
ARE increases the chance of Moss being traded.
If you are going to move Moss, now is a good time to do it as his value will only go down. Draft picks would be good (late 1st? 2nd and 4th?). Boldin would also be good (and makes some sense, as Boldin wants out of AZ and Moss would be a good compliment to Fitz), but expensive, both in terms of cash to Boldin and cap hit for Moss.
It would also put the team at the mercy of their second year receivers (unless Moss is traded for another exceptional WR), but that’s basically what happened this year, and anything worth doing once is worth doing twice, right Vinny?
Signing Plack to a two year deal was foolish in the first place. Anyone think Brooks will be back for some competition? I have me one of them gut feelings.
TTB!

Apparently
Both contracts have option bonuses in 2010, which if not executed, allow them to become unrestricted free agents after the 2010 season. That feels better.
Except that one more year of the suck out of both of them and it becomes almost certain that they won’t be making any noise in free agency.
Cutting them both after 2010 = $9.5 million in dead cap. Yeesh.
How much was the initial Plack deal for? Is it possible he was cut to be resigned at less money?

That was a smart move on Vinny's part. (For once)
I personally think they’ll renew the cap, because I think the owners will do whatever they can to get it back, (although, I suspect that owners such as Jerrah, the Danny, Bob Kraft and Bob McNair will only make half-hearted efforts) but in the case that there ISN’T a cap after 2010, this is a good deal — the Danny will finally be able to complete his goal of becoming the NFL’s version of George Steinbrenner.

I suspect
that if there IS a cap after 2010, one or both contracts will be renegotiated. That’s how the Skins’ FO works.

Just when I thought my nads were completely numb
Vinny kicks them hard enough to make me feel actual new, worse pain.
I agree with ach above by the way. When I heard this, I immediately wondered if this meant they would use Santana Clause to get draft picks. Then again, we bash this front office for their lack of consistency. Thanks to this deal, we will have the same receivers for the next 6 years! Awesome.

help us please...
Plack-Man must have pissed someone off for hi to get cut. He did an admirable job and kicked the “knuckleball” of a punt that several would-be returner’s dropped-and that means turn-over opportunity. What we would need in convo is a pure-speed gunner to try and scoop that ball. I am glad Carter is still around, he does a decent job. I like ARE but more as a #3 gadget guy, I know longer want him returning punts. WRs tend to develop slowly, but Thomas showed promise in limited action and will likely take over the #2 spot in another year. I prefer Kelly because I like big men on the field, but he didnt cause anyone to hold their breath.
