Answering Your Chargers Questions

Hey Redskins fans.  My name is John and I run Bolts From The Blue, SB Nation's community for Chargers fans.  I understand that it's probably been more fun to be a Chargers fan this year than it has been to be a 'Skins fan, but I also know that there are a large group of you who would still root for the team and go to the games if they came back in 2010 with Zorn as the coach, Jason Campbell as the QB and the biggest FA money can buy (Brandon Marshall?).  That doesn't make you guys stupid, it makes you really really good fans.  The fact that FedEx is still filling up tells me everything I need to know about the Washington fanbase.

Anyways, this is a bit of a throwaway week for the Chargers.  They've clinched the #2 seed in the AFC and have no shot at the #1 seed.  What they'll be going up against this week is the "Rest vs. Rust" dilemma, and trying to avoid any and all injuries.  That's not to say they won't come out firing.  I predict that the Redskins offense will look almost competent against a D that will be missing it's best players, and the Chargers offense will look pretty good in the first half before pulling all of the starters Colts-style.  That sound good to you guys?

Questions in the comments below.  I'll be back to answer them frequently.  Also, please Rec this FanPost so that it stays near the top of the home page all week.

Yea...

Any updated on how long Phillip/Gates/LT/Sproles will play. SD already clinched first round BYE so I’m curious how bad Norv wants to stick it to his old owner.

Norv doesn’t really care about winning this game. It’s sticking it to Snyder enough that he’s coming in with the 2nd best team in the AFC.

How long those guys play depends on the score and how the game has gone. If they’re playing like garbage, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them play the whole game. Norv hasn’t tipped his hand as far as how long the starters will go, but everyone is expecting about a half of football from Rivers/Gates/LT. Sproles you’ll probably see more of in the 2nd half than the 1st.

My guess is that you won't see much of LT in the game.

You’ll prob see alot of Sproles in the first half and alot of Hester in the 2nd.

FedEx is still filling up?

I didn’t expect to have so many empty seats around me on Sunday night.

With that said, I really hope you rest your starters. Particularly your tackles, so Orakpo can get that rookie sack record.

Yea...upper bowl has been 60% full most of the season

And more people than I'd like

show up each game with opposition jerseys. Surprised Danny doesn’t start selling opponents jerseys at our home games.

Well, this late in the season it’s understandable. Still better than the Chargers, who have a hard time selling 60k tickets during a 10 game winning streak.

Can’t rest both tackles, because we only have 3. You’ll see a lot of Dombrowski at LT and Runyan at RT though. The team wants to get Runyan back in top form.

How do you rate the Chargers 2009 offensive line?

In ’07 they had a great year, then ’08 was down, I believe.

They seem back up 2009. Is Marcus McNeil still good at LT?

The O-Line was a bit rocky to start the season

but has really solidified and would probably rival the 07 line at this point.

No way the bolts let McNeil walk at the end of the season.

Is it just me?

Or does Phillip Rivers have a weak arm with long balls (max out at 45 yards)?

He has weird mechanics, but it seems like the really long throws the WRs are always coming back for it.

"It was one of those things where everyone in the building was suddenly excited again," Cerrato said. "And all the women in the building were the most excited. They couldn't believe we were getting the guy from "Dancing With the Stars."

by Kevin Ewoldt on Dec 29, 2009 12:29 PM EST reply actions

Rivers is no Carson Palmer (as far as arm strength goes)

But the long bomb has definitely been effective weapon for the Chargers this year, the Bolts lead the league in 20+ yard receptions this year.

But your right he does not typically hit his receivers in stride on the long balls.

by Grey Suit on Dec 29, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

In 2007, yes. In 2008, not at much. In 2009, it depends who he’s throwing to and where the defense is. When he throws to Vincent Jackson a lot of the time he’ll throw it short because that’s where VJ likes it. Especially because CBs are always trying to get “on top” of VJ, leaving the short throw open. In the last 2-3 weeks we’ve seen a couple of throws that were about 3 yards to short, and a couple that were about 3 yards too far.

I think his arm is getting a little tired as the season goes on, plus he’s been getting heavy pressure by TEN, CIN and DAL (and having to throw those deep balls faster or shorten his stride). For the first 11-12 games of this season though, he was constantly referred to as throwing the “best deep ball” in the league. His arm strength was there (not top in the league, but close) and his touch/accuracy was perfect. I expect a great deep ball from him when he’s not getting chased around in the pocket.

What would you like to see the Chargers do with their 1st pick next year and with free agency?

"It was one of those things where everyone in the building was suddenly excited again," Cerrato said. "And all the women in the building were the most excited. They couldn't believe we were getting the guy from "Dancing With the Stars."

by Kevin Ewoldt on Dec 29, 2009 12:30 PM EST reply actions

In free acgency,

I would love to see them work out long-term deals with McNeil, Jackson, Floyd & Sproles (if he will sign for less than starter money). I don’t think they need to look outside of their own organization as far as pro talent goes.

With the first pick,
I really think it depends on if LT and Sproles both return and/or if they can work out long term deals with the guys i mentioned above. If all goes well with those two issues I think they should pick the most talented player on the board regardless of position (except for QB), since there would be little to no holes left on the roster.

by Grey Suit on Dec 29, 2009 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

1st Pick – A lot of people want a NT to eventually replace Jamal Williams. I want a top-notch RB. Somebody like Beanie Wells, Donald Brown, LeSean McCoy, Shonn Green, Knowshon Moreno. A player that can take over against a weaker run defense, but has great hands to be effective in the passing game as well.

FA – The Chargers are notoriously absent in the free agent game. They have (I believe) 4 players on the team that were brought in via free agency (excluded undrafted rookie free agents): Jon Runyan (backup RT right now), Ian Scott (cut in camp), Kris WIlson (3rd string TE) and Kevin Burnett (starting ILB earlier in the year, now a backup). And all of those guys were signed this season.

So, as you can see, talking about or hoping for free agents is pointless with the Chargers. Also, without a CBA it’s not going to be a very good year for free agents.

It baffles everyone why the Redskins never picked up Runyan

With all their injuries.

I know why

This was a rebuilding year of sorts for the Redskins. Better to try out a kid than bring in a one-and-done vet.

Yeah, my helpful twitter followers made me look stupid. The Chargers actually have 9 players on the team that were brought in via free agency and a couple of them (including Wilson and Scott) were brought in last year, mid-season. Still, besides Scott (who is starting because of an injury) and Burnett (who is no longer starting), they’re all backups.

What happens to Norv if you lose your 1st playoff game (in the 2nd round)?

"It was one of those things where everyone in the building was suddenly excited again," Cerrato said. "And all the women in the building were the most excited. They couldn't believe we were getting the guy from "Dancing With the Stars."

by Kevin Ewoldt on Dec 29, 2009 1:04 PM EST reply actions

Supposedly the Bolts will issue him an extension during the bye week so regardless how they play in the divisional round Norval will be back.

Norv has gotten a lot of crap from the fans and the media since day one, people still talk about how the Charger should have never fired Marty here. If Norv has not proven all the nay sayers wrong this season I’m not sure if he ever will, the man has won the AFC west and at least one playoff game in every year that he has coached in San Diego.

by Grey Suit on Dec 29, 2009 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

^This^

It also depends how/why the game is lost. Short answer though is that Norv is the coach going forward.

Football questions seem moot at this point

So what should I know about Qualcomm? I hear it’s a cesspool.

by ReggieBullits on Dec 29, 2009 2:11 PM EST reply actions

From a fan stand point its not as bad as it is made out to be.

Its mostly the press boxes, and luxury suites that are really bad (ie the reason why it is over blown). The scoreboard is outdated, the food inside the stadium is nothing to write home about, and all of the field level seated have an obstructed view. When compared to the new stadiums being built now a days the Q really lacks a lot of the creature comforts (food selection, jumbotrons, Person TV’s ect..) but as far as just going there to watch a football game it still gets the job done pretty well.

What’s great about the Q though is that it has a huge parking lot (largest on this side of the Mississippi I believe) and it is always great tailgating weather.

Thanks. Will I need a parking pass ahead of time or is it cash parking?

The last Jim Zorn presser should be interesting tho. He’s already turning in some quotes I’ve read.
