A Peak Behind the Scenes; MNF Booth; Gruden Rips Snyder

In the Australian broadcast of last night's complete and utter debacle, there was an interesting moment that I don't believe you would have got in America. To be honest, I have sat here and typed 15 different versions of the sentence explaining what it means, but really I have no idea, it was just interesting is all.

During a 2nd Quarter TV timeout, we did not go to commercial, so you could just here Jaws, Gruden and Tirico talking in the booth (thinking they weren't on air).

After a bit of back and forth and laughing with each other about how the hell they give America the impression this is still a contest or that the Skins can come back, Jaws laughing says, "You know what I think, the Skins are guaranteed to win this game, they are gonna come back." Next, Jaws and Mike have a go at Gruden for being too negative (while laughing) and just putting teams down. Gruden then replys:

"Spend ten minutes with Dan Snyder and you'd be negative all the time too" too which Jaws and MIke stop chuckling and just sort of solemnly agree with, solemnly, but completely agree with I should say.

SO, like I say not sure what it means or if it means anything, beyond Gruden wont be coaching us, but thought you might be interested anyway, because no doubt while I was listening to this (highlight of the game for me by the way) you were watching Favre sport the latest season Wranglers or something.

Gruden's observation

was probably spot on. If so, this franchise is doomed to be the doormat of the league for the next couple of decades. The Raiders organization will start looking better soon.

Wow, great anecdote

And is anyone surprised to hear this?

Snyder seems like such an overbearing, negative jerk.

Well.....

now that Vinny is gone, and we have what most everyone knows to be at least a competent GM, Dan will be next on the hot seat. If these same sort of things keep happening then everyone will know for sure it’s him not Allen.

I have to believe Dan saw enough of a percenatge drop in revenues since this whole revolution and anti-Vinny or Dan or whatever you want to call it started. Next time it happens, their will be no getting out of it unless he marches the GM to the microphone to state that Danny has no day to day control over the team or that he has given complete control of the team over to the GM.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that getting rid of Vinny was even better than most people think because it leaves no one to blame except Dan and in the long run it will hurt his pocket book even more. Dan made a change because the fans demanded it and if it continues to be a three ring circus the next thing they will demand to be changed will be him and that could get ugly.

You may be right

that the smoke and mirrors stuff isn’t going to work anymore. I just worry that it ultimately won’t matter. Things definitely have gotten far uglier this season than anytime I remember in Snyder’s ownership of the team but who knows what he’ll do. I’m glad Vinny’s gone but I’m still tired of being the laughing stock of the NFL and until that starts to change I’m going to remain a skeptic.

both right on target

with respect to:
“getting rid of Vinny was even better than most people think because it leaves no one to blame except Dan and in the long run it will hurt his pocket book even more”

and

“I’m glad Vinny’s gone but I’m still tired of being the laughing stock of the NFL "

Part of me is skpetical too but as I see it, this is the only (slim as it is) chance the team will be good again. I just don’t think Snyder will ever sell the team (if I were rich I wouldn’t) so all we can hope for is that he learns to let the GM do his job.

It's sad, because the Fedex Field experience

just seems to get worse and worse. Half the time, half the crowd is rooting for the opponents or they are jeering at you for rooting for such an unbelievably bad team. I mention this because several posters have stated how the revolution must have dented Danny’s pocketbook, but other than perhaps dress merchandise I’m beginning to feel that our opponents fans are doing quite nicely in making up the difference.

For one thing, they buy up prime tickets from secondary market sellers for which Danny gets more money per game than season ticket holding fans (if I’m not mistaken). They sure buy a lot of $8.00 domestics, too. It seems that Danny can always count on the mixed fan base of the DC area due to all the non-natives who migrate in for govt or business reasons, plus the fact that the Giants, Eagles, and Steelers are just up the road.

The Pittsburgh game last year was the real eye opener. I really felt I was watching the game in Pittsburgh. This NEVER even came close to happening at RFK.

I will continue to root for the team and I will try to be optimistic that Bruce will turn it around, but I feel it will be a long time before we get a real Winning HC who can run a team successfully with the help of the FFO, rather than despite it.

I know what you mean about the experience

it’s just awful. I went to the game against KC and me and my friends not only got into a fight with a Chiefs fan (unbelievable in itself) but I got punched in the face by a fellow Redskins fan for reasons that remain unclear to me. My buddy who has season tickets but is not in the greatest financial situation can’t find even find Skins fans to sell his divisional game seats to. He therefore goes to the games only to find himself surrounded by opposing fans. I’m used to this kind of thing happening in baseball (being an Orioles fan the invasion from NY and Boston has become an ongoing occurrence) but I can’t believe that this would go on in other NFL stadiums especially for a big market team.

I refuse to buy anything in the stadium but enough people seem willing to do so. It’s a very toxic environment and even when I get offered tickets I’m sometimes reluctant to go because as much as I want to support the team in the stadium I know that I can have more fun with a case of beer in my living room than I can at FedEx.

can't find

not “can’t find even find”. Stupid brain hiccup.

Perhaps

That was more an indictment on the current state of this team than of Snyder. If I was Dan Snyder and you sat me down to discuss the Redskins, I doubt much positivity would emerge.

Be careful taking things out of context. I’m not sure this is another person speaking about how awful of a person Dan Snyder is.

That being said

From what I can tell…Dan Snyder is an awful person.

by Romans12 on Dec 23, 2009 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

ha. exactly.

He’s actually a good human being. Gives money to charity, cancer causes, inner city kids, etc.

But as a person, he seems to be an egomaniacal jerk.

Just curious whats so egomaniacal about him?

I know he likes to make A LOT of money but thats not being egomaniacal. You can compare him to Jerry Jones by the fact the he apparently is meddlesome and is willing to spend money, but thats it. He’s not an ego-maniac like Jerry in the ways of building a monsterous stadium, videoboard, trying to bribe every major sporting event, trying to be a savior for Pac Man, Tank, and others. Did you see the Texas-UNC game this past weekend, the man has his own basketball court with the freaking cowboy logo on it, I tried not to vomit. Everything he does is to personally massage his ego. I don’t see Snyder doing that as much.

But with that being said its hard not have a humongous ego when you have billions of dollars, Jerry doesn’t even have that.

I heard on 106.7 the fan this morning

A chef at the resturant that snyder brings all his prospects for a dinner date said that he requests a table in the center of the room, he could easily have the back room (according to the chef) but he chooses to be the center of attention. that seems egomaniacal to me. if your going to be taking these guys out to dinner for what seems to be an interview why not conduct your business in a more quite atmosphere?

His reign of terror over the Reskins is egomaniacal.

Vinny and Dan

Vinny and Dan both should be gone. We are half way there. Good luck Bruce!

Merry Christmas to you and yours, sir!

Does the distance lessen the stink? Because let me tell you, here in DC it just smells awful

Stuck wih Danny boy

I’m afraid we’re stuck with Snyder for the long term. As long as he’s in the black he ain’t selling. It’s hard to lose money in the NFL with the large TV contracts and revenue sharing. I think if we win it will be in spite of him not because of him. If he gets lucky and hires the right person and we win quickly before he pisses that person off (similar to the Johnson-Jones soap opera). I think with the exception of Donald Sterling, we may have the biggest D-bag owner in sports. I’d include Jones in there too but at least he has the rings.
