Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Wikipedia says it's Jon Gruden

I know I just posted that I thought it would be Shanahan, but......

Jon Gruden's Wiki page

And we all know Wikipedia is never wrong. I just wanna know who wrote it so quickly.

Jon David Gruden (born August 17, 1963 in Sandusky, Ohio) is currently the head coach of the Washington Redskins of the NFL. Prior to taking over as coach of Washington, he was the head coach of Tampa Bay and of the Oakland Raiders for 4 years.

Jon David Gruden (born August 17, 1963 in Sandusky, Ohio) will currently never be the head coach of the Washington Redskins of the NFL because they are the worst football team ever. Prior to deciding to never take over as coach of Washington,

At least THIS edition is somewhat amusing.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I know,

it might well be somebody’s speculation and/or prank.

If Bruce Allen

didn’t already have the link to the ‘Skins’ org, I would say the Allen hiring makes it a no-brainer that Gruden was the next coach. Allen and Gruden worked together in Oakland and Tampa Bay, and in fact, Gruden brought Allen over from Oakland because he couldn’t get along with Rich McKay.

This could also be Snyder thinking he needs a “tough” head coach. Maybe he thinks Zorn has been too easy on the players. We’ve seen him do this once before, when he hired Marty to take over from Norv.

And, of course, the WCO is already in place in Washington. Like Tampa in 2002, we’ve got a championship-worthy D but need somebody to get us to score some points.

Also,

Gruden is even more likely than Shanahan to allow somebody else to be GM. You can’t say that for Holmgren (who looks like he’s going to Cleveland anyway) or Cowher.

Allen says he's evaluating
Allen on Coach Jim Zorn: “I met today with Jim Zorn. Told him what we’re going to try to do in the next few weeks. We’re going to have some more meetings and discuss the future.”
Allen’s impressions about the Redskins: “From afar, I like their talent. They have a nice core of talent here. That’s attractive. They have some young players whose futures are extremely bright.”

by dr WNC on Dec 17, 2009 2:47 PM EST reply actions

That's hilarious

He just complimented Cerrato’s work here with the “young players whose futures are extremely bright” comment.

by travisjh86 on Dec 17, 2009 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

Well, yeah. Sure.

The problem is, we have the WRONG PLAYERS, and absolutely NO BRIGHT PLAN to go with those futures.

Dback, What wrong players ??

I think our team is alot better than our record. The reason that we are not playoff bound has alot more to do with the Head Coach than anything. Jim Zorn was like a Alcoholic he did not realize he had a problem (bad play caller) until some one pointed it out ( Dan Snyder). The difference is that a Alcoholic realizes he is a drunk normally after he runs someone off the road. Zorn will only loose his job, for not recognizing his weakness and finding some help on his own.

We have too many wide receivers

and not enough linebackers or offensive linemen. Most of our depth players aren’t particularly good, and were signed just for that reason — depth, with no thought as to talent or ability. We also had a pretty lousy kicker until recently.

Oh....

and I can’t BELIEVE we got rid of Jeremy Bridges.

I'm sure they talked about it
depth, with no thought as to talent or ability.

from a talent perspective, but with all the high priced FAs the salary cap problem results in drafting, corralling, skimming off the streets people who can be signed at minimum price. Why else could anyone not fathom the talent gap between D. Jackson of Philly and our subsequent drafting of M. Kelly.

High priced FAs cause spikes in your lineup between great players and just minimally talented players across the board. This is only exacerbated when the high priced FA only performs at a league average talent level (D. Hall in my opinoin)

I can understand

why they drafted Kelly over Jackson. They were looking to get a bunch of BIG targets for Campbell to throw to, since the receivers they’d gotten in the recent past were all small, fast guys like DeSean Jackson. (Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle-El, David Patten, Taylor Jacobs, etc.) Since Moss and Randle-El were the incumbents, it seemed redundant to get a younger version of ’Tana. Plus, wide receivers are probably the toughest position to judge in college and draft successfully for the NFL.

And frankly, McNabb is a better quarterback RIGHT NOW than Jason Campbell, so McNabb helps make Jackson look good. As does the fact that Philly’s offense isn’t totally dysfunctional. Although McNabb doesn’t have Campbell’s arm for the deep ball.

All good points

I should have used a better example, for example one of the linebackers we ended up with (or discarding).

I'll bet the Gruden is NOT out coach next season.

If I was in Allen’s shoes, I wouldn’t want to hire the only guy I’ve ever worked with, especially since I didn’t win a championship with him. Of course, I’ll feel foolish when Gruden is discussing everything he will do differently next year as coach when commentating on monday.

Another reason it might be Gruden:

Gruden’s not gonna be afraid to work for Dan Snyder. Snyder is like a richer, less insane version of Al Davis.

Which

should have taught him a lesson. Stay with the TV crew and take it easy while bringing in the big bucks.

Less insane is debatable. Davis is probably senile. Snyder is too young to be senile. Davis at least was a coach at the college and pro level. Snyder was the last guy picked in kickball.

I don't think he was even picked.

I think they just kicked him. Would explain a lot.

Wathing the Bruce press conference

If you close your eyes you’d swear you were listening to Gruden talk. Those two speak exactly the same. It’s uncanny, try it.

Good old Wiki
Washington Redskins
With Vinny Cerrato resigning from The Redskins on December 17th 2009, The Washington Redskins hired Bruce Allen, son of late Redskins Hall of Fame coach George Allen. The Redskins and former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan have begun talks over Washington’s still-occupied head-coaching position.

The team is in talks—Whoo-hoo! a great source of the truth Wikipedia
