New Look Redskins

Here's what to expect:

GM - Bruce Allen(I like this alot)

Head Coach - Mike Shanahan

O Coordinator - Kyle Shanahan(will be groomed to take over for his father)

O Line Coach - Alex Gibbs(comes over from Houston to help implement zone blocking scheme)

D Coordinator - ? (i would love it to be Gray, but I think Shanahan has him own guy already picked)

New Looks:

WCO/Verticle passing game

Zone Blocking running game

3-4 defense (yeah I know everyone hates this, but lets see how it works before some bash it)

What the staff will want:

1. Developed, atheletic, offensive line

2. Versatile RB (great runner, who can also catch the ball well out of the backfield)

3. Smart, instinctive QB with big arm (sorry, I don't believe this will be JC17)

4. Agressive D

Key FA's who could fit the system:

Logan Mankins  OG (pats) he is adapt at running the zone blocking scheme, and should hit the FA market

Brandon Marshall  WR (den)  He will be tough to pull away, but he loved Shanahan when he was in denver

Elvis Dummerville  OLB (den) Again, with the season he is having, will be tough to pull away

Draft:

1  Jimmy Clausen - has the big arm, smarts and varsatility Shanahan is looking for. Doesn't turn the ball over, and ran a pro style ofense at ND. Shanahan wants to put his own stamp on the team, so look for this to start at the QB position.

2  Ciron Black  OT  LSU  -  Has good feet for a big guy, and if LT or RT don't work out, he can always be moved to G

2  Look for us to recoup another 2nd via trade or compensation for loosing a RFA.  Ryan Matthews  RB  Fresno St  -  Is a tough downhill runner, who excells at catching the ball out of the backfield.

other needs:

C - Matt Tennant   Boston College

RB - Evan Royster   PSU

OT/OG - Dennis Landolt    PSU

LB - ???

This post scares the crap out of me

Too much change, yes it could happen but if it does the Redskins will need 2 or 3 years to recover.
And then after 2 to 3 years it will start over and owner Daniel Snyder will continue the legacy of Losing.

by dr WNC on Dec 17, 2009 11:21 AM EST reply actions

Me too

Thank God we didn’t hire this guy as GM. I hope we don’t have this much upheaval. Our team isn’t THAT bad as is. We don’t need to rock the boat this much.

by CarverM on Dec 17, 2009 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

AAAAAGGHHHHH!!!!!

There is not ONE good thing, except maybe C. Black, that I saw in this post. Clausen?!!!! OMG!!

We will never get Marshall or Dummerville out of Denver – that is wishful nonsense.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

I mean seriously, Tiller,

You scare the bejebus out of me.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Dec 17, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

I think whenever someone seriously suggests we draft Clausen

the rest of what they say can be safely disregarded. After all, if we wanted Clausen, we could’ve just stuck with Vinny.

by CarverM on Dec 17, 2009 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

We should draft Jimmy Clausen

Carver thinks Meghan Fox is HOT!!

We should draft Jimmy Clausen. Carver watches football and not cooking shows on Sundays.

We should draft Jimmy Clausen. Carver will win the lottery.

by CJHutch on Dec 17, 2009 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

What's with all this Clausen talk?

Seriously, a whole post just to say we should draft Jimmy Clausen three times? I don’t get it.
Ha

by CarverM on Dec 17, 2009 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

Common Scott

You don’t think that with all the rumblings this scenerio couldn’t happen. Again, I will say, not all of this is what I want to happen, rather what I believe will happen. Also, tell me this. What is wrong with a solid FA lineman like Logan Mankins, a center like Matt Tennant, a OT like Black, a running back like Ryan Matthews a QB like Clausen and resigning Jevi Jones. If you ask most, they would say that is a pretty damn good offseason and one hell of a draft.

by Tiller56 on Dec 17, 2009 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

I'd take Mankins

in a heartbeat. As long as we don’t OVERPAY for him. The rest of what you say sounds very good as well. Until you get to the part where you say…

We should draft Jimmy Clausen.

First of all, what has Clausen done to deserve being taken in the 1st round?2nd, even if you look past his glaring lack of accomplishments, what exactly are you doing? You’re talking about bringing in a 28 year old veteran guard (who I DOUBT would join a rebuilding project), to go with your 29 year old $100mil D-tackle and your 36 year old, defensive anchor, MLB.

No, we don’t need a rookie QB starting next year. And for everyone who says “Well look at Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco”, I say, yeah, go ahead and look at them. Tell me how well they’re doing now. Bottom line – rookie QB’s take time to develop. Without the total demolition of this team, we don’t have that time.

by CJHutch on Dec 17, 2009 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco

also benefitted from great offensive lines and strong running games. They were really just game-managers, for lack of a better term.

by CarverM on Dec 17, 2009 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Both have totally enjoyed

the Sophomore Jinx, too. Not every decision is an immediate step forward.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Dec 18, 2009 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

lineman can play well into their 30's

barring serious injury. I’ll take 4-5 good years from Mankins.

by Tiller56 on Dec 17, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Look at Aaron Rodgers...

that is the proper way to groom a QB…besides the Brett Favre shenanigans. Have the QB sit on the sidelines and watch how to properly manage a game and lead a team of grown men, let him get hungry for his leadership position. Do not bring in a rookie QB with a garbage offensive line and mediocre running game or else you will have another JP Losman, Matt Leinart, Patrick Ramsay, David Carr, Joey Harrington, blah blah blah. Random Fact: Aaron Rodgers was selected the pick right before Jason Campbell.

by wildinout on Dec 17, 2009 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

the only thing scarier

is keeping the current staff and having this same circus next year.

by aFan4Life on Dec 17, 2009 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

Any new head coach and GM

are going to want to bring change. The only chance we had of somewhat stability would to have hired Mike Holmgram. He too would have wanted his own players running his system. As fans, we have to believe this is the start of massive changes, that can only help a beligured franchise.

Russ Grimm?

Could it be that the Skins continue to look into the past to set up the future?

by word2bigbird on Dec 17, 2009 12:13 PM EST reply actions

That would so make my day.

Russ Grimm and keep Sherm Lewis, J. l Gray and even Smith if he wants to. With him helping Allen judge O-line talent on draft day we should be as rich in linemen in a few years as we are now with TE’s.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Dec 17, 2009 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

With Grimm and Buges

our Oline would be “impregnable”

by CarverM on Dec 17, 2009 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

We could get a cheap RB

from the Old Folks Home and they could walker their way down field.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Dec 17, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

I'll show up

if they have open tryouts. Probably could muster a 1300yd. season while splitting carries.

by CarverM on Dec 17, 2009 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

I would

dance in the streets. I think they should’ve hired Grimm 9 years ago.

by CJHutch on Dec 17, 2009 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

offfense

what kind of offense does russ grimm usually run?

also i heard doug williams might come to DC as some management exec

by word2bigbird on Dec 17, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

well I would expect Mr. Allen

may have some ideas himself on what is needed.

First he has to evaluate the team structure, figure out what is working and what isn’t. Then he has to evaluate the team itself and determine what coach/staff/players are retained or not.

Based on those decisions, we can then start talking draft. We have to let this guy decide on what is viable, and what isn’t. For all we know, he may well keep Zorn and Campbell. Is it likely? no, but at this point it’s simply too soon to tell. Let’s let him catch his breath and roll up his sleeves first before we start to armchair his decisions for him.

I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

by piratedan7 on Dec 17, 2009 12:47 PM EST reply actions

You don't think the hiring of Allen

was predicated on there already being a silent deal in place on who the next coach will be?? If Zorn and Campbell were the responsibility of Vinny, and Danny had made up him mind that both were going to be retained at seasons end, don’t you think he would have kept Vinny around so he could have taken some of the credit? Read the writing on the wall. Zorn is gone. Campbell is gone. This is a major overhaul.

by Tiller56 on Dec 17, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

I'm hoping no

Bruce Allen, needs to come in and evaluate from the inside what he has as the GM of the Redskins,
If something was in place before his hire then he needs to define that now and the Redskins can look forward to a 3 to 5 year team building process…
I tend to believe in some respects Snyder has to know this, and he wants to win now. Snyder does not want to change coaches again, he’s hired a GM to evaluate and produce a winner now. That means no Major overhaul.

by dr WNC on Dec 17, 2009 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

It may be that no one has decided

either way whether this is a blow up or progression into next year. As you’ve said, let’s let Allen do a little stand back without all the organizational political crap and come up with a plan. If he shows he’s thought it through and the plan makes sense I say go for it.

I’m just sticking to my conservative nature because I think we have a lot of things that we can build on without changing the system.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

What?

I agree with you? :P

That’s right, I agree that the hiring of Allen does not automatically mean Zorn and JC are gone. It wouldn’t surprise me though.

I say that now we have what we asked for: a real GM. So let’s support him! If he decides Zorn isn’t the problem then I’m behind Zorn all the way but if he brings in a different HC then I’m behind that guy all the way too.

by aFan4Life on Dec 17, 2009 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

Great Point
I say that now we have what we asked for: a real GM. So let’s support him

Exactly…..for ages Skins fan have wanted a Competent GM to come in, evaluate and make football decisions…. so now that is done we should do exactly what you just said, trust his judgement

Pommylee

by Pommylee on Dec 17, 2009 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

It also doesn't make sense for Dan

to stand up and announce that Bruce will be making all the decisions while at the same time insisting on some pre-employment agreement that Zorn stays or goes or that Snyder has already decided the new HC.

Allen would never have gone for that to get the job.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Dec 18, 2009 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

It is our job as bloggers

to armchair everything immediately. But we do need to let the guy do his work, you are right.

by CarverM on Dec 17, 2009 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

Colt

Nobody mentioned that Colt Brennan is coming back. I think Jason has really improved – starting to see the field better – but Colt is a playmaker, and he might be as good as Clausen. Anybody want Charley Weis for offensive coordinator? He was good enough for Bill Belichick, and his failure at Notre Dame was because of an absolutely horrible defense – they kept losing 38-35 games.

by Donnio1234 on Dec 17, 2009 1:25 PM EST reply actions

We'll have to see Colt next preseason

before we decide if he’s even good enough to be our #2. He sucked last preseason. He sucked bad.

by CarverM on Dec 17, 2009 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Colt was injuried

Chase is no longer a Redskin

by dr WNC on Dec 17, 2009 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

Allen was great hirer, vinnie is gone, here comes Shanahan,to save the day,Good bye J.campbell

Colt will be back-up QB,IF we can keep him healthy enough.Bradford or Tebow will be 1 of our new QB"s. J.Campbell is gone hopefully for a 1st and 3rd draft picks, the better he plays down the stretch, the better draft pick will will get. It only took him 5 yrs. to finally get how to become a QB? Sometimes he forgets how to play QB.He is now audiction for another qb job, hope we have some takers,it cost us a 1st round draft pick to draft him,now we want it back. Time to Rebuild.

by CHAOS-BRINGER on Dec 18, 2009 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

cost us more that a 1st round to get him

you’re dreaming if you think someone’s giving up a first a and a 3rd for him (not a knock against him though)

SpotieOtieDopalicious

by Rekka on Dec 18, 2009 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

1st and 3rd picks

are the price to take him as RFA on a $2.5 million contract.

by SSBlitz on Dec 18, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

I know that

I just don’t know of any teams that would pull the trigger for that price (the picks)

SpotieOtieDopalicious

by Rekka on Dec 18, 2009 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

As stated...that is why the "ball" is in the Redskins court

A simple 2.5 million tender, then it takes a 1st and 3rd for another team to sign him.

Win-Win for the Redskins
Campbell stays or
Campbell goes and the Redskins get draft picks.

Gibbs was still the O-line coach in Atlanta?

People are quick to turn against an idea they don't like

but read the writing on the wall. As for the draft, it is way too early to read the writing this soon, so it’s all speculation as to who will be avaliable when we draft, and who that pick will be. All i’m going to say is don’t be surprised if both Clausen and Bradford are on our wish list.
I scout high school football, and project how these players will fit in at the next level. In my experience both Clausen and Bradford will become good pros. I also do a lot of research into the college game, and know players and positions very well. I am simply trying to provide some insight on draft prospects based on our needs and players who may be avaliable.

Sorry if my opinions on our future offend anyone. I have been saying for 3 months that Shanahan is on his way to DC. I have also said we will take a QB with our first pick. I have recently said if Shanahan is hired we will switch to the 3-4. I stand by all of this, so we’ll just have to wait and see if i’m full of S%$# or not.

by Tiller56 on Dec 20, 2009 11:21 AM EST reply actions

For which college

do you scout HS players?
