OTs in the next draft
If you could control next years draft, what OTs would you take?
Obviously we need 1, 2 or 3 of OTs (is 4 too many?) and it's also obvious that Okung is the top prospect but he'll probably not be available when it's our pick. Let's pretend we duct taped VC into a trash can and took his place for the draft who's your next pick? I ask because I don't watch much college football.
Is Trent Williams going to pan out?
Is Charles Brown worth a top 10 (8 or 6 for that matter) pick?
It's a thin class of OTs (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/TSX/2010_OT) so do we grab an OT regardless of other talent available and needs? Can we afford to draft something other than an OT? After ignoring the OL for years I'd focus on the best OL available but I know that the teams that are good consistently tend to go for best player available. I just don't know if we can afford to do that this year.
What are your thoughts?

Okung could be there at our pick.
“Orakpo probably won’t be there at our pick” was a popular saying this time last year.
There’s some talent available in the second round too, Black and Fox are two names I’ve heard thrown around (but don’t know much of either).
I'm for Ciron Black
admittedly because I really like his name but that’s really all I got because I don’t like college football very much. Anybody been watching LSU games to give any insight?
SpotieOtieDopalicious
Why would you like Ciron Black
more than “Selvish Capers” or Charlie Brown?
That’s just unAmerican. You some sort of Black Panther?
Linus FINALLY got rid
of his “security blanket.” So we need to stay as far away from Charlie Brown as we can.
Hah! +1.

The guys u mentioned above are all seniors besides Campbell.
There will be some juniors to come out. The top rated junior should be Anthony Davis fron Rutgers. 6’6’ 325. Great footwork. Can play either RT or LT. He could be the 2nd tackle off the board. Bruce Campbell (Maryland), although raw, should be the 3rd tackle taken. He too is a junior. Joseph Barksdale is a junior from LSU who plays RT. His upside is huge. Don’t know if he will declare early or not.
Here is my top 5:
Okung
Davis
Campbell
Williams
Black
The only 2 of these who I believe are worthy of top 10 consideration are Okung(who will be gone within the first 4 picks), and Davis, who still could be a reach between 7 and 10.
The teams who are picking in the top 10 who need OT’s are
Rams(more likely to take a QB though)
Lions(could go either DT or OT)
Chiefs
Raiders(more likely to go DE or S)
Skins
Bills
Seahawks

Has Bryan Bulaga said whether he's coming out?
I’ve heard he’s supposed to be the real deal. Probably the most complete and NFL-ready tackle in the draft, if he comes out.
O-line
Of course, there are also a lot of veterans who we could get by trade, or grab as free agents. No rookie is a sure thing. I don’t think we need four offensive linemen from the draft. At least one, probably two, mostly to replace Heyer, and challenge Jones (T) and Big Mike (G/T). Remember, the start could be Samuels (Jones), Dockery, Rabach, Thomas (Williams/Rinehart), Heyer (Williams). Of course, this depends on how good you think Big Mike and Levi Jones are, and the health of Chris (doubtful) and Randy (hopeful).
I think Big Mike
can be an above average guard next year. Kinda like what moving to guard did for Leonard Davis. I think he will always be a sub-par OT but I also thought he was better than Heyer there this year. As for Levi I think he is slightly above average and a must sign for us. We cant expect to get 4 new tackles through the draft and if we have to start Levi next year cuz our FA money or draft picks went to other needs(RT,OLB,CB,G/C,RB) then thats not the worst thing I ever heard.

Been reading alot about the top OT's
and besides Okung it is a pretty pathetic draft class. Not looking forward to using pick #8-12 on a OT who most likely will never be able to play anything other than RT or who will need a year or 2 to make it onto the field. But then again last year the top 3 OT’s taken have really struggled this year and Oher and second rounder Volmer are looking like the 2 best OT’s to come out of the draft. ESPN has a nice section where KC Joyner uses metrics to evaluate if the top prospects are over or underhyped by comparing their metrics to guys who have gone onto the NFL. His conclusions on the other 2 OT’s he looked at besides Okung is rather bleak.
As for FA we have alot of holes so if we can get a guy at a relatively reasonable price we should do it because the draft is gonna be a total crap shoot so we can’t go in needing to fill certain positions. Thats a good way to drop Deangelo Hall money on a second round talent. Look at Jones. Most of us want to re-sign him if we can do it at a reasonable price and then ideally draft someone better who can either man the RT or move Jones to the bench where he will be a top flight backup. If we can’t then Jones is a serviceable starter right? Well I think we should get as many of those types of guys as we can so we can draft more for need. Signing the eagles old fading LT really helped out Jacksonville who drafted 2 tackles on the first day last year and then had one of them Eugene Monroe really struggle. I think there is much to be learned from that situation for us.
a lot depends on where we pick
as I think the ’Skins are capable of winning at least one more game, which slots us down a bit.
As for those above us, If St Louis goes first, they are going QB because I think Bulger has run his course, so pencil in Claussen, I gotta figure TB is going with bpa and since they are likely to be picking next, I would expect Suh or Okung to be their choice. With Det picking 2 or 3, it would be the other guy that TB doesn’t choose.
Cleveland may still have faith in Brady, so maybe the safety Berry goes there.
That leaves who? Oakland, KC, Seattle, Carolina, Buffalo figure on KC being above us and they already have a QB, but WR may be where their focus is since they’ve added a lot of D picks over the last couple years and Cassel needs someone to throw to.
say Oak is ahead of us, the issue is how much faith do they place in Gradkowski? Russell hasn’t been the answer so far, how long do they stay with him? Al Davis is picking, so who knows?
Seattle needs a QB but with Locker gone, do they wait a year or address it now since this is a “heavy QB talent year supposedly”, Carolina might very well consider an upgrade to Delhomme (they’d be crazy if they didn’t), Buffalo might not be sold on Edwards or Fitzgerald for all we know. If those guys lose out (a possibility) they could all be picking ahead of the ’Skins. Hell, if the ’Skins win two, Chicago could come back to the group, but I doubt they are looking at a new QB since they have so heavily invested in Cutler.
So suppose the ‘Skins win two (the Giants do look beatable don’t they? and the ’Pokes come to our place too and Norval may well be resting his guys) that could leave them at 6-10 or 5-9 most likely looking at the 8-10 slot.
I wouldn’t have a problem seeing the team resign Levi Jones and then drafting Williams out of Okla. It wouldn’t be that much of a reach and if he’s gone, trade down and focus on OLB. There’s that kid from the small college
I like the idea of getting that Veldheer kid out of Hillsdale in the 4th round. 6-8 and runs the 40 in under 5, it would give uncle Joe someone new to mold.
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....
Chicago's pick goes to Denver
who has 2 great tackles. Seattle and Buffalo have HUGE holes at OT but also need a QB. As for KC, Brandon Albert can’t stay healthy and they are already talking about moving him to guard so there might be a need there especially after what happened to Cassell this year who they owe a bajillion dollars to. Basically it’s a crap shot so we should try and fill as many holes as possible and take BPA. Even if we resigned Levi and signed a decent RT in FA we could still go Okung if he drops. Not sure after Okung there is a guy who can step in and start right off the bat so we should try and enter the draft with a solid line and hope to improve it instead of needing a draft pick to fill a huge hole cuz who knows who will be available. There could be 1-3 OT’s off the board even before we pick.

I know what he will do
say Oak is ahead of us, the issue is how much faith do they place in Gradkowski? Russell hasn’t been the answer so far, how long do they stay with him? Al Davis is picking, so who knows?
he will pick the QB with the best 40 time, doesnt matter if he cant throw, its all about the 40 time for Davis
Pommylee
He likes the cannon arm too
accuracy is not considered, but he wants the strong arm to throw to his fast WRs.
so basically he wants
A Combination of Usain Bolt and “The Wild Thing” from that Major League movie as his QB
:)

If we somehow feel
we can get better value for the pick (unlikely?) by drafting a RG, I say we go for it, rather than a tackle.

Anybody worth looking at?
SpotieOtieDopalicious
2nd rounder
or do you think we can get him a little later?
SpotieOtieDopalicious
At G
I would love to persue Logan Mankins from the pats as a FA. We all know the pats don’t believe in over-paying for players, and they draft so well that they believe that they have a younger player to step into his place. Therefore I believe he will be avaliable as a FA. He would be a great replacement for R Thomas. He is only 26 or 27.
Now THERE'S an idea.
And then use the first round pick on a S or OT? I like it.

Where do you think Taylor Mays gets picked?
Shanahan would love a Tackle like Selvish Capers (ex-TE), quick and athletic. Trade down our first round pick for Taylor Mays and Selvish Capers…? Wishful thinking… ?
That would be
a bit of a coup for us, sort of the way Orakpo still being available was this year.
At this time last year, Mays looked like he was going to be the top safety in the 2010 draft, but his slight regression this year means his stock has slipped a little. I’m still guessing that he’ll be gone by the 20th pick or so, but I wouldn’t exactly be shocked if he were still there when we choose in the 2nd round. I do like the idea of trading down in the first round, though.

winning games in the end might actually help us trade down
as the 8-10 pick might be alot easier to trade than the 5th pick would have.

I've seen Taylor Mays
being picked anywhere from 10-24 in mocks. But there are still games to be played and combines to be run. Trading out of the top 10 could get us 2 mid first rounders (might take a bit extra on our part, depending on the exact spot). Selvish Capers is Shanahan-type OT, and I’m sure there are others, who will be around there. Taylor Mays could also be there, as well as an SLB like Rolando McClain, Travis Lewis, or Sean Weatherspoon.
Damn, I can’t wait for the draft.
I'm telling ya pass on mays
he was exposed this year in the Pac 10. The guy can’t cover. He got to live off of a good to great defensive front 4 last year and an exceptional set of LB’s leaving him free to roam around and level highlight reel hits (remind you of anyone?). This year, he actually had to cover a few TE’s and RB’s and was exposed. When he was with elite defenders, he looks great, when he has to be “the guy”, not so much. If you’re gonna spend a 1st round pick on someone, you best be sure that he’s “the guy”.
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....
Yeah....
he looked a little bit like Roy Williams this year. (The safety, not the receiver)
"The existence of flamethrowers is proof that someone, somewhere, said to himself, 'I want to set those people over there on fire, but I don't feel like walking over there to do it.'"
He was also
1. injured for much of the season,
2. subjected to an unusually strong Pac-10, and
3. surrounded by a completely AWFUL defense.
Okay, so maybe not AWFUL, but it wasn’t a typical USC defense from the past 9 years or so.

Last time I checked...
When he was with elite defenders, he looks great
The Redskins have elite defenders so he should be back to looking great…
Yeah, but
our guys generally aren’t THAT MUCH BETTER than the rest of the league. That’s what Dan’s talking about — USC over the past few years has gotten all the best talent on the west coast.

PLEASE
no more first round safeties. Sean Taylor was a once in a decade type guy. We’ve already picked more safeties in the 1st round this decade than any other team. And now, with ST21 gone, we’re stuck with the one that underachieves, and reminds us weekly why you don’t pick safeties in the first round. Landry’s play is no better than any of the other safeties we have, only he was drafted A LOT higher.
What about...
Rolando McClain at linebacker. Guys a beast. Then maybe a good OT or G slips to us in the second. Wait, we still have a second round pick right??
Not engraved in stone:
afan4life cited for 2010 draft prospects for OTs.
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/TSX/2010_OT. In recent drafts college tackles, guards, and centers often end up playing different postions in the NFL. The links for draft prospects at tje guard and center postions are respectively http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/TSX/2010_OG and http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/TSX/2010_C.
Based on 2007, 2008, and 2009 drafts; an average of 21 linemen have been selected in the first 4 rounds. As can be seen by the OVR (overall rank) there are some guards and centers mixed in the prospective tackle selections. Some rankings for 2009 placed Edwin Williams as a 5-6 round pick, but he ended up being a UDFA. Meredith was thought to be a 2nd round pick but he went in the 5th round. On the other hand, Vollmer was suggested as a 4th round pick but he was selected in the 2nd round. So none of this talent evaluation is engraved in stone.
Bruce Campbell
I’ve watched the big man play for a few years at UMD. he is not a first round player. i guarantee he does not pan out in the NFL. Okung please! No QB’s either!
I'm reading all good things about Campbell
He’s also becoming known as a workout warrior, which means he would come in and find out he has a lot to improved to handle guys like Daniels and Orakpo.
I agree Okung over Campbell but if the Skins are picking mid first or late first (trade back) Campbell appears to be a good pickup.
don't we have enough
Terrapin linemen? I don’t watch much college football, but I don’t recall them having an explosive offense this year.
great info folks
thanks for all the info. Now I have to go read up on all these guys.
