Around SBN: How A Letter From Tom Coughlin Helped One Fan's Recovery

Vinny's Incompetence.

Out of utter necessity Cerratto has accidentally put together a decent oline.

Before that he did his best to be the most incompetent GM in the league. And from him stems the top to down lack of common sense I continually see this team lacking.

What the Hell:

1. Orakpo at LB - Orakpo is not only a non existent LB but he's somewhat of a liability he makes absolutely no tackles.

2. Orakpo at LB - Brian Orakpo has to play linebacker because we don't have a 3rd LB on this team, Cerratto didn't see it fit to sign one of the plenty of cheap veteran LBs out there or draft a single competent linebacker outside of the top 2 rounds so that we could put Orakpo at DE.

3. Randle El  at punt returner - . This man hasn't had a solid return in 2 season how the hell is there no one else on the team to return punts. How has this change not been made why is there no one competent enough to see this when the entire fan base can.

4. Having no RG - Randy Thomas was  blatantly not going to make it through the season. He might have even exceeded expectations at 2 games. Rhinehart was never considered a suitable starter. And Edwin Williams the undrafted C should not have been seen as a potential answer.

5. Ray Willis at RT - It unbelievably baffled me that as we were on the outset of making a decent and reasonable FA acquisition we suddenly got cheap. And Can't afford a RT for the price of 3.5$ mill over two years. When we just broke the bang once again like we do every offseason.

6. Landry at FS - I understand this at first. But I hate how we haven't figured out that Landry isn't a good FS and is a great SS. And we would never just sign a solid starting FS we only sign stars.

7. Routinely undermining his Head Coach.

Cerrato, the OL

A lot of what you say is true, but they weren’t Vinny’s fault – it was Joe Bugel and Jim Zorn, who always overrated Heyer, Rinehart, Montgomery and all the rookies, and probably didn’t like Jeremy Bridges, the only experienced backup lineman, who should never have been cut – he’s now starting left tackle for Arizona. Vinny and Dan certainly listen to the coaches. Vinny brought in Big Mike and Jeremy, even though Joe was saying they were already solid (Vinny has said you don’t get pro-bowlers to be backups). Just generally, Vinny and Dan gave the coaches a terrific team, and the coaches (hurt by injuries) mis-used them. Jason really is looking like a decent quarterback, but I’m torn on Jim. He has been a terrible coach, but is it possible that he has learned, and developed into a good coach? They are a pretty tough team now, but is it due to Jim? If he stays he might want to resume play calling – a disaster. And how do you fix the Lewis thing? A tough decision for Vinny and Dan.

Randel El as PR is also not Vinny's decision.

And Orakpo is DROY candidate. Because people label him an OLB, doesn’t mean he’s always playing there. They’re broadening his skillset and only using him back there to attack gaps in run situations. He’s still DE 7/10 plays.

VINNY, VINNY, VINNY

Donnio1234 says Vinny gave the coaches a terrific team and they (and injuries) screwed it up?!?! Well, at least there’s ONE fan who will be on board with Vinny and Dan next year… We did NOT have a playoff-caliber team. We are only doing well because the younger guys have an opportunity to play, possibly, up to or beyond their potential. I’m glad they have the chance, but I’m not foolish enough to think all will be well when the rest of the teamgets healthy.

Vinny's picks

A panning out to work out.
All except the whole no line decision… Othere than that he will stay because all the other positions that are now being used cause everyone is hurt is working…. As far as your post goes Vinny drafts the players based on talent. The Coaches put them in the positions that they play in… As much as I hate defending that A-hole his picks are the ones that are showing up to play lately…

I cannot believe im am in a position where I am defending him…

90% of what you said is coaching not GM. after the past few games I’d say he’s got good guys on the roster they just haven’t been allowed to play for whatever reason. the only real bad thing about the team is the o line and secondary. He had arranged an amazing secondary but the cornerstone of that was taken from us too early. The O Line on the other hand really is in excuseable.

Zorn is to cautious he was afraid to play different players because he was scared of the veterans.

Zorn has been pimped by certain veterans all season long. Rock should have been off of the kick off return team most of the year. Just like ARE should not be returning punts. Now all of a sudden Zorn somehow realizes this. Devin Thomas has been just sitting on the bench rotting away. The sad part about this is Devin had wanted to return kicks all season long.

It looks like he will will get the #1

Kick return job this week.. Our special teams has been horrible on kick returning. Every week there is another issue that cost us a drive. Most games you could argue that it cost us the game. they need to seriously work on squib punts…

Vinny - Draft

Vinny actually has drafted pretty well, it’s just he doesn’t value draft picks properly, routinely trading them away or giving them up in FA signings.

I would slightly disagree with this

I think that the players we have chosen in the draft have been quite good for their position at times, Orakpo, now Thomas, Davis, Landry (jurys out but a solid pick at the time

But for that the credit goes to the Personell guys who do the scouting

A GM’s job is to assign priorities and pick accordingly, Vinny drafted purely off the draft board and not by need

The Orakpo pic is wonderful for our D, and I would not change the fact we have him, but thats why I am not a GM, a truly ruthless GM would ahve seen last year that we need Oher more than we needed Orakpo (particuarly after Signing Haynesworth) but Vinnie just could not help himself.

Same the year before, we went in with a plan to get Receivers for the WCO, fair enough… BUT THREE in the 2nd RD< thats madness, why not get Thomas, Davis and an O-Linemen, or Thomas/Kelly and an O-Linemen, when that was our area of need
