Why in the world is Randel El still the primary punt returner?!?!?!?

We had a great game. Offense and defense looked solid for the most part. But what about special teams? The coverage on kicks seemed a bit sloppy, but the only real negative think that I can think of about this game was Randel El. How much does he have to mess up on punt returns before they decide to give other people a chance more often. Its nice to see Moss back there from time to time but I'm sure someone else on the team has some experience on punt returns. It's bad enough that he usually just fair catches the ball within our own 10 yd line but today he ruined good field on a punt by waving for a fair catch but not actually catching it which allowed it to bounce from what would have been around the 40 yd line back to the 20 yd line I believe. Then later he gives the Raiders the ball back. Being a slot receiver and the punt returner seems to be a bit too much on his plate so he should be relieved of his punt return duties. Westbrook, Moore, maybe even Mitchell, anyone else should have this!

Yea

I was thinkin to myself during the game about how much I would like to see M&M’s back there

Anyone would be better than Randel El at this point

Who know knows, we put him back there and he may take the ball to the house. Let him get some kind of playing time.

I was hoping

Devin was going to replace ARE….

by DbacksSkins on Dec 14, 2009 12:04 AM EST reply actions

why dont they do that

I mean he was a good Kick Off returner, and now they have given Rock his KR job back so why not give DT a chance at Punt Returns

I get that there must be some differences between the two skills, but surely not that much right?

Agreed.

ARE is a great slot receiver, and a decent #2, but somehow, not so good at PR. At least, not since leaving Pittsburgh.

Actually,

now that we have some credible wideouts NOT named Santana Moss, why not let ‘Tana return punts again? He’s great in open space, and it’s less of an issue if he gets injured since we have more receiver depth now.

by DbacksSkins on Dec 14, 2009 12:19 AM EST up reply actions

Thats a good idea

Tana has taken some punts to the house for us. The only thing is that he doesn’t want full time punt return duty since he did it so much with the jets. I read that somewhere a couple of weeks ago when D-Hall was in punt return discussions.

:-(

I miss D-Hall….

Your not the only one

He is the only cornerback that has consistently got interceptions. Our only other corner to pick off a QB is Tryon I believe.

by BrandonO on Dec 14, 2009 4:29 AM EST up reply actions

ARE really doesn't help this team much

except for some depth at WR. MM and DT should be the wideouts (DT#1) with Moss or Davis in the slot (when Cooley gets back). You noticed his drop late in the game?

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Dec 14, 2009 9:37 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think they gave Rock the full job back

DT was returning kicks during the Raiders game. I thought the same thing too because DT has been doing pretty good with the kickoffs. The only real noticeable difference that I can tell between the punts and kickoffs is pretty much the hangtime of the ball and somewhat less space to work with.

by BrandonO on Dec 14, 2009 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

Plus

you pretty much have a blocking scheme on kickoffs, while on punts, it’s just anything goes.

Even Satan thinks Scott Boras is evil.

by DbacksSkins on Dec 14, 2009 12:32 AM EST up reply actions

ahh thats a good point

I kind of had the lack of space hang time thing in my head already, but you are right with a Kick Off you pretty much know exactly where its going so you can get your blockers in much mroe accurate positions right

I've been saying

all year that I want to see Tryon back there. That kid is fast as hell, and shifty. You saw it on his interception. On top of that, when he came in he said he was a great punt returner, and CERRATO said the same thing. Tryon said he would “take it to the house everytime.” Now, I know that’s just cocky cornerback talk, but maybe the kid can be good there. Either way, he CAN’T be worse than ARE. The bottom line is, give your young guys every possible opportunity to help the team.

No one can be as worse as ARE

If thats the case then I’d like to see Tryon back there too. I did notice on the pick that he had that he is fast. Hopefully he would run towards the end zone as well instead of sideline to sideline. They should just give everyone a try who wants to do it and she who has the best results.

We had a great game?

Come on man, we played the Raiders!

The win was nice but hardly impressive considering the competition.

I di like the idea of getting Moss to do some returning.

by aFan4Life on Dec 14, 2009 8:37 AM EST reply actions

We also

scored 34 points for the first time in Jim Zorn’s tenure. That includes TWO games against Detroit.

Even Satan thinks Scott Boras is evil.

by DbacksSkins on Dec 14, 2009 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah but

it was the Raiders, another 4-9 team who are giving up 24 points on average a game. We improved but can we do it against a decent team?

by aFan4Life on Dec 14, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

Looks like

we’re gonna find that out this week.

Besides.

Even under Gibbs 2.0, in our 2005 playoff year, we still lost to the Raiders.

We did

What we were supposed to do/played the way we’re capable of playing, and in the end that’s all you can ask for from your team. It’s not like we just barely beat them, we blew them out and beat them by 21 points! Plus we did it at their place. Yeah, it was only 783 people there, but ask the Eagles how difficult it can be to play there because they lost to the Raiders. And, the Raiders did just beat the Steelers at their place, so I was most certainly satisfied with yesterday’s win.

by bigrm18 on Dec 14, 2009 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

I'm satisfied too

I just don’t want it blown out of proportion. My reaction is that now we have something to build on but we still have a long way to go. This game shows we can do well but this is no time to get cocky.

by aFan4Life on Dec 14, 2009 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

who the hell gets cocky at 4-9

my point is, people are always trying to take away things from the players. Especially last week with the Saints.

Everyone was saying the only reason we even kept it close was because of the injuries to their secondaries. After this season, I don’t wanna hear ANYBODY talking about injuries. I think this team has a legitimate shot at having AFLAC be an official sponsor next season. We have depth at some positions, and players that play hard on others.

Don’t take that away from them.

by Rekka on Dec 14, 2009 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

lots of people

get cocky with 1 win and a 4-9 record.

I’m not taking antyhing away from them, I’m just calling it like it is. I thought we could win 10 games this year and if they’d played the first 11 games the way they’ve played the last 2 games it could have happened. Instead we’re at 4-9 -laying for respect while knowing the playoffs are out of reach. So while they did well the last 2 games they need to be consistent and play well every week, that’s what professionals do.

by aFan4Life on Dec 14, 2009 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I really don't see how anyone can get cocky with the season pretty much wrapped up for us.

If anything it should build confidence because they know what they can do even with drama and injuries plaguing the team. I thought we could win 10 games this year too and they could have but they didnt. Things be like that sometimes. I’m sure we all would love for our Skins to be playoff contenders and have a winning record every season. The up and down slide is just apart of football. They are all professionals but we arent going to win all the time. Look at the Steelers and the Patriots right now? How about Carolina? Professional teams that did well last year, not doing so hot this year. It’s a part of the game.

by BrandonO on Dec 14, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

I've seen it

plenty of times, people getting cocky that is. Some people just don’t seem to have a good hold on reality.

by aFan4Life on Dec 16, 2009 8:37 AM EST up reply actions

The Raiders may be 4-9

But don’t forget that one of those wins were against the Eagles, another was against the Bengals, and don’t forget they also shocked the Steelers. Any given Sunday, remember that.

by BrandonO on Dec 14, 2009 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

We are too

So both teams are 4-9 which means we’re pretty much the same as the Raiders. Like I said, it’s no time to get cocky.

by aFan4Life on Dec 16, 2009 8:38 AM EST up reply actions

I think

we should all offer our left nut to Philly for Desean Jackson , Hes a baaaaaad man.

by skinaholic on Dec 14, 2009 7:16 PM EST reply actions

MY PRAYERS HAVE HOPEFULLY BEEN ANSWERED!!!!

I heard DT is supposed to do a lot of the punt returning during the Giants game. Hopefully it doesn’t wear him out since he is going to be such a busy man. Being a starting WR, KR, and PR is definitely a lot but I’m sure he can handle it.

by BrandonO on Dec 17, 2009 1:33 PM EST reply actions

Yeah,

he’s taking a lot of the load and putting it on his shoulders, and that’s great.
