Around SBN: Jeff Sullivan's MLB Trade Deadline Primer

Let me tell you something that I think's helping Jason out a lot. In the previous season and part of this season, we wanted Jason to be able to call all the formations and all the plays in the huddle after a few simple key words. And so we put a lot of pressure on him to know everything, as far as the play call and who goes where. There was a lot on Jason's shoulders. And when we switched the playcalling system to simplify things, we gave Jason a wristband. And so it's read to Jason as Wristband 1 or Wristband 2, and then he's able to just read it. It's been obvious that he's playing better since the switch.

"And I think it's slowed down his mind, and I think he's able to function better as a quarterback, as far as not having to worry about the play, getting to the line, reading the defense, knowing what he's gonna do with the ball, instead of thinking every time so hard about getting the play into the huddle. It's not a criticism at all. It's timing on offense. Some people's minds doesn't work so fast, as far as just straight memory. Some people take a second to recognize things, and so I think this is a benefit to Jason.

Wow, I didn't know that.

Explains a lot. The whole offense has gotten better as the season went on.

Despite our underwhelming talent at OL.

Wow

What a novel concept!
Must have came from an inovative coach.
Amazing! Zorn leader and headcoach…

LOL, Come on man !! The wristbands came with Sherm Lewis .....

This is amazing to me how so many people on here are trying to give JIM ZORN credit for the team playing better ??/ I am confused ?????.

I love Chris Cooley

for explaining things and telling the media more than the coaching staff or other players usually do.

by SSBlitz on Dec 10, 2009 10:53 AM EST reply actions

Did you read the Cooley article a few days ago in Washington Post ???

He said that Jim Zorn only is in charge of play calling during TWO- Minute offense !! Sherm Lewis is Red Zone and Passing and Sherm Smith Running game !!

I don't see your point.

There’s a lot more to be a head coach than play-calling. Most teams have an offensive coordinator call plays.

I have to believe Sherm Lewis added this in

It does not speak highly of Zorn who never called plays to Jason’s abilities.

didn't the wristband only get here

when sherm started calling the plays?

Almost every QB in the league uses wristbands

I’m sure I could believe seeing Jason using them before now.

Anyway, what’s important is what play gets called in what sequence and whose on the field to run it. It looks transparent now after the Saints game. It was entirely predictable when Zorn was calling it.

wait a second

I thought all we needed was a qb and we were going to sb. I mean, isn’t that why snder and cerrato are flying around looking at qb’s? And now you’re telling telling me this was all an accessory issue? All we needed was a wristband? The question is, how many draft picks did we give up for that wristband?

by monk81 on Dec 10, 2009 12:09 PM EST reply actions

a second and a 4th

danny also offered 15 million guaranteed for 3 years but never heard back from the agent.

No need to start talking sense

If I said I’d bet 100 dollars we don’t draft a single o-lineman this offseason would anyone take it?

by SkinsOsTerps on Dec 10, 2009 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

I would.

I’ll even give you out of the first 3 rounds.

wristbands are so greedy!

Is there any mention of a bedazzling option?

by monk81 on Dec 10, 2009 12:14 PM EST reply actions

they tried to put that in there after the contract was written

the wristband’s people said no go.

What sucks

is that Jason was leveled by the Saints after getting rid of the ball and instead of getting a roughing call, he got flagged for not having enough flairs.

No one else is bothered by this?

Regarding Campbell:

Some people’s minds doesn’t work so fast, as far as just straight memory. Some people take a second to recognize things, and so I think this is a benefit to Jason.
So we had to dumb things down for our 1st round draft pick QB in his 5th season (2nd year in same system)??

exactly.

Agreed

Most QBS have wristbands.

by SSBlitz on Dec 11, 2009 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

Well if that stops working

maybe they can try color coding a la Mark Sanchez…

by VA_Skin on Dec 11, 2009 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

I wasn't referring to the wristbands

but the comment Cooley had about the reasoning behind why they “switched the playcalling system to simplify things”.

by VA_Skin on Dec 11, 2009 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

But who knows what the starting point was?

It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Zorn had some over-complicated, ineffective system in place because he’s so convinced of the genius of his WCO .

If you look and listen to Zorn talk you can tell he is a complicated person.

Every interview he gives he has some long winded drawn out response to a simple question. Some times he goes aound in a circle and then forgets what the question that was originaly asked was. Uh, this and Uh, that I am like Come On Man you know what questions they are going to ask you. Why does it take you so long to answer them?
