Spring Cleaning In November
At 2-6 the chance to turn this season around is slim to none. It’s time to bring in a real gm who will let coaches and players know that the season is over and auditions begin next week. Even out playing time and let’s see who wants/deserves to be here next year. So who’s safe? I’ll give my list of offensive and defensive players that have earned a spot on the team for next year and then you guys leave yours in the comments:
Offense:
Back next year;
Mitchell – Thru preseason he earned another year with this squad and I want to see him get some playing time now.
Davis
Dockery
Rabach
Moss - unless we can get a 3rd or better draft pick for him
On the Cuff – Kelly & Thomas – they need to show that they’re capable of playing at a higher level or they need to be pawned off for some late round picks or just flat out cut.
Shop Em- Carter & Cooley I love him but he’s got the most trade value on the team and Fred Davis is the future TE of the team.
Defense:
Back next year;
Orakpo
Jarmon
Haynesworth
Fletcher
Wilson
Horton
Doughty
Hall – he’s not a number 1 shut down corner but he does have a knack for turnovers and that’s important time to shop Rodgers.
On the cuff – Barnes and Tryon we need to see what Barnes can do out there he may be able to become the big physical shut down corner we need.
Shop Em – Landry & Rodgers
Special Teams:
Rock – always rock solid and we will need some hardworking vets on the team to set the pace.
Hunter the punter – the injury sucks but when he’s healthy he’s a huge asset to the team.

I'd put Moss on the trading block
and keep Yoder, our only blocking TE who did a nice mini-Dwight Clark imitation yesterday for the touch.

Also,
I’m waiting til the end of the season before I make a statement like Fred Davis is our future at TE. Agree that Cooley has most trade value, but that intercept was all on Davis, who looked like a girl trying to catch that pass. Sheeesh.

Fred Davis is quite a ways off from establishing this
Fred Davis is the future TE of the team.

He's not there yet
But he has the physical talents to get there and he won’t get there unless he starts. you can’t learn the game in practice or from college, they help but you really learn in the game at full speed. The fact is we’ve learned that we don’t have the weapons to get things done on Offense we’ve also learned that building thru the draft is the only way to build a succesful team. we gotta get younger and to do that you have to get rid of older players, i’m not saying i don’t love Cooley and I don’t think that Davis is anywhere close to as good as him but we need to change. Dan’s way doesn’t work. We need to get younger and that means taking chances on some young players.

Devin Thomas and Malcom Kelly
have the physical talents too.

then why can't they get seperation
Thomas needs to really step up the second half of the season (it looks like he’s really trying now), Kelly has a bit more of a grace period in my opinion because he’s more of a first year receiver in terms of experience. But both struggle to get seperation, it’s like they consider themselves underdogs and don’t want to get physical with the corners.

From what I saw yesterday
Laron is scared to make a tackle on a RB comming right at him. I maybe wrong here but isn’t tackling a big responsibility of a safety? you can go low on them but you gotta rap up you can’t throw a low shoulder at a good RB and expect to bring them down.

He does a nice job of
hitting QBs in the back as they run out of bounds. Don’t underestimate the man.

My point is that it's a little early to hand the reigns over to Alarmclock Davis

What is up with Laron?
I don’t know what Landry would get in return. The # six overall pick in the 2007 draft is starting to look like another Vinny bust. Total regression here. He still makes dumb plays and he never makes a game-changing play. Of course he’s usually playing 30 yards away from the line of scrimage.

There are several players who are safe by virtue of the contracts that they have signed. They are, in no particular order: Santana Moss, Clinton Portis, Chris Cooley, Antwaan Randle-El, Albert Haynesworth, Andre Carter, and Deangelo Hall.
… that’s not to say that none of those guys are tradeable. Moss, Carter, and Cooley probably are.
Fred Davis is NOT the future. For those of you who are confused about this, here is the news reel: The Eagles ignored Davis two weeks ago. He didn’t block anybody, but he caught eight passes- mostly in garbage time, with a hurry-up offense, running non-sideline routes. That’s a wrap, you are now up to speed on all things Fred Davis.
Cooley, on the other hand, may be our best player.
The defense is solid. It doesn’t need spring cleaning. The secondary is pretty hit-or-miss, but let’s watch them play some good offenses and then make judgements. Landry and Carter are expendable, so if you can get pieces to help the offense, do it.
If you could can the whole offense and start over, you would. The only guys we have that seem worth having are Cooley, Moss, Rabach, and Sellers.

Un-capped year
Makes everyone vulnrable to the house cleaning IE: Portis who we will be absorbing 6-8 million dollar cap hits from now till 2012 if we don’t jettison him next year and absorb it in an uncapped year… and if Davis isn’t the future than why did we draft him. I didn’t say he’s a stud right now or even mention his bright spot performance in the eagles game. He showed in college what he’s physically capable of playing at a high level in the NFL and in a year or two he could be a dominant TE.

Cooley
Cooley is one of the only guys on this team that plays with any heart/intensity/energy. This team lacks those kind of players, so trading him IMO would be a big mistake. We should be trying to add players like him to the team.

They have no heart, they don’t try, they suck, clean house, fuck Dan Snyder, yadda yadda yadda. (So tired of hearing all that)
With a decent offensive line, almost none of this talk would be happening. So why clean house? I agree that there are some people on this team that are bums and some that shouldn’t even be in the NFL, but you’re talking about keeping 14 people and letting the rest go? You’ve got to be kidding me. Who are you going to replace them all with and where are you going to find them at?
I appreciate the effort but I can’t believe some of the names you’ve left off you’re list and some that you put on. What has Chris Wilson done this year that you want to keep him over Rocky? What has Jarmon done this year (other then youth and he’s our 3rd rounder for next year, I agree to keep him but he’s definitely not more deserving of a spot than Griffin)?
Remember we don’t have 39 draft picks to replace the ridiculous amount of talent that we have on this team, so unless you think we’re going to be picking up some gems in FA (which i thought was what everyone was trying to get away from doing except for depth) then I’m not sure what we’re going to do with 14 players.

The people left off the list
are not going to be cut, I listed people that have earned a spot here for next year and wrote that the rest are open for auditions, I should have put Rocky on there too I ment to list all the LB’s. I just reread it and I could have worded it better but I was at work so I wasn’t editing.

You can't shop Rogers
He’s a free agent. And if he wasn’t, you’d be dumb to shop him. Just because he doesn’t get you turnovers, he’s the best cover man on this team, and one of the best in the league. People see that he doesn’t get INTs and they hate him for it. That’s only one small part of his job!

Disagree with small part
If you are a professional football player and you can’t catch a ball that hits you square in the chest not once not twice but more times than the fans can care to remember there is something wrong… He’s great in coverage but if we’re going to be a dominant defense (not bend don’t break) then we need guys that can capitalize on big play opportunities. His practices should include Jason Campbell drillng balls at him for atleast an hour a practice until he can catch 95% of them. Look at the steelers defense they can take over games because when turnover opportunities arise they don’t let it slip out of their hands…
