3-4 Defense

How would everyone feel in the "supposed" new coaching regime brought with them the 3-4 defense? I know Cower ran it in Pitt.  I don't think Shannahan ran it in Denver.  Gruden? I forgot.  It could help bring a different look, and a much needed attitude change to an already good defense.

Anyways, I think we have some guys that could fit into that scheme nicely:

                                                                         Alaxander            Haynesworth            Jarmon

                                    Orakpo                     McIntosh                       Fletcher                                Carter

Hall                                                                                                                                                                                 Rodgers

                                                                     Horton                                                       Landry

Only problem is...

everyone already hates the fact that Orakpo is playing linebacker…..now you want 2 of our better down lineman in a free space LB role.

Orakpo

is alot like Demarcus Ware, and you see how he thrives in this scheme. Carter has already played in the 3-4 in san fran.

I’d be terrified of putting Carter out in space. He’s looking good now, but we all now that we can attribute most of that to Haynesworth. Which means we’d probably have to end up looking for a replacement in the draft, because as of right now we’ve drafted based upon the system we have now.

With that said, from what I’ve read on the site a 3-4 OLB functions about the same way as a 4-3 DE (correct me if I’m wrong), and I do think Orakpo has the athleticism for that so that’d be interesting to see. But the thought of Jarmon-Hayneworth-Orakpo makes me giddy and I’m not quite ready to give that up yet.

On a side note – why hasn’t anyone looked to see if Henson has what it takes to play SLB? I’m probably the only person that liked what I saw out of him in preseason. The mistakes he made are correctable, and most likely can be worked out after another offseason or two. It’d be the best way to maximize our return on an investment, so we could use picks for lineman, and get him some playing time so we can even see if he’s worthy to take over for Fletcher-Baker when he retires (I’m still looking for the Fountain of Youth to prevent this from happening btw)

You mean Henson for Carter

and use Carter to spell Haynesworth, Alexander and Orakpo?

sorry

I brought up Henson for something totally different. I was wondering why Henson wasn’t put in at LB so Orakpo could play DE with the scheme we have now, not the 3-4 that Tiller was talking about.

The 3-4 would help to get more atheletes on the field. You could throw Wilson in Carters place, and line Carter up at DE form time to time. Jarmon, if playing close to 280 could be a nice DE in the 3-4.
As for Henson, I like your thinking. Kid is said to be very athletic, and a good tackler. I do seem to think he is destined for the middle with that low center of gravity, and his 240 lbs frame.

3-4 Defense

I would love it if the Redskins had 3-4 for defense. I love the thought so much that in my Madden Nfl 2021 my custom defense is 3-4 and i own with it when playing as redskins, and when I play as Brian Oraqpo as linebacker in 3-4 defense I always have a good game with him. I agree that Brian Oraqpo is like Demarcus Ware when it comes down as him blitzing as a linebacker.

WOAH.....

That didn’t keep my spacing at all…..hopefully you get the picture. That sounds like the linup everyone is looking for!

by shvd98z24 on Nov 5, 2009 1:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Orakpo is not a DE in a 3-4. The 3-4 DE operates more like a D-tackle. Orakpo would definitly be an OLB in the 3-4. Daniels would be an excellent DE in a 3-4. Too bad he’s not 27 anymore.

by Tiller56 on Nov 5, 2009 2:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Keep in mind the OLB in the 3-4 is your primary pass rusher, yet needs to be able to play in space. McIntosh would be a MLB, not an OLB in the 3-4. Chris Wilson would fit the OLB role nicely. Many times your 3-4 DE’s are between 280 and 300 lbs. We could sign Peppers and have him play opposite Jarmon as the other DE. Now that would be a perfect scenerio.

by Tiller56 on Nov 5, 2009 2:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Got ya.....

Peppers would be another hug contract however!

by shvd98z24 on Nov 5, 2009 3:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i was thinking the same

But figured what the hell, it’s a hypothetical so I just went with it.

yeah, he would be way too expensive, and he’s getting up there in age. Someone with his build and athleticism would be ideal though.

by Tiller56 on Nov 5, 2009 3:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I am not at all opposed to the 3-4

We might even be able to go and get a 3-4 DE in free agency to help with the rotation there. Golston, Jarmon and Alexander would be nice 3-4 DE’s. Orakpo would be playing a position similar to now right? Rushing the passer would still be his priority.

I think the problem with Carter is that he simply doesn’t want to line up as a linebacker ever again. I asked him in training camp if he saw himself dropping back to linebacker and his quote to me was, “I’m finished playing that position.”

by Sugar on Nov 5, 2009 3:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Maybe Carter said...

“I’m done with that.”

You get the point.

by Sugar on Nov 5, 2009 3:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

if that's the case he needs to go

his answer should have been “whatever this team needs, I’ll do”

Carter's production fell off big time

in San Fran after they switched to a 3-4. Not that he’s been the model of consistency here.

He’s 30, but can still play at a high level. i’m sure if he was asked to become an OLB next year, he could be persuaded to do so$$$$

by Tiller56 on Nov 5, 2009 3:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

mmh

I don’t doubt that he could be persuaded to do so with $$$, but we don’t have it to give. And I’m wary about giving another aging vet a big bonus to do something to help his team win.

In other words

why do we have to give these guys extra cookies to get the job done they are already supposed to do – play football…HARD.

No 3-4.

I hate this defense. Finding another suitable OLB would be our problem. I read a piece once that the NFL has probably reached its maximum number of 3-4 defenses because of the special requirements of this position. That and I hate seeing that many people on one side of the ball in a 2-point stance.
I think we could solve many of our problems on defense if our coordinator would let loose and be more aggressive. Blache is a pussy. Let the big dogs eat!

by CarverM on Nov 5, 2009 4:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Prob is

Blache most likely won’t be retained by whomever we hire as our next head coach. That person may want to bring in their own scheme and their own attitude to go with it. i just see how the transition to the 3-4 has helped in Denver. Much like us last year, they had problems getting pressure on the QB, and creating turnovers. Now look at their D.

by Tiller56 on Nov 5, 2009 4:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

we've done a great better than job than we did last year

using our base defense here as well. we just haven’t been taking advantage of the opportunities given to us.

for full disclosure, I will say that I haven’t seen one broncos game this year. anybody know they’re sack and turnover numbers?

WE NEED ELVIS

We should sign Dumervil who i believe will be a free agent and put Orakpo on the line where he belongs

ELVIS

Wooo, Back to the ages of Rock and Roll

Why do you kill threads????

Where do you believe Dumervil would fit in? He is no linebacker. He is similar to Orakpo, just shorter.

by Tiller56 on Nov 5, 2009 5:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I've wanted to see some 3-4 this year

Not permanently, just mixed in every once in a while.

+10 to VA_

Hybrid defense:

1st: NO FREE AGENT SIGNINGS on the Defense, Peppers, Elvis- good players but the Redskins do not need to add Free agents they need to build a defensive team with the players they have and add depth through the draft.

3-4 and 4-3 hybrid, where each game is schemed and the best rotation and formation is used each game and/or during the game…

by dr WNC on Nov 6, 2009 7:48 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Anything that increases

our game planning and forces other teams to scout and prepare more is a good thing. Plus, you get more players off the bench and contributing – always a morale booster, which fosters more competition for playing time, etc.

by Scott E on Nov 6, 2009 11:26 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This is an interesting idea.

It would definitly limit offenses from certain game-planning. We have the personal to do this. Penn State has done this quite often over the past couple years, and it certainly gives a different look.

by Tiller56 on Nov 6, 2009 8:35 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

How about the.....

1-5-5 defense! Haynesworth on the line…..5 LBS…..5 DBs???? Hope you guys know I am kidding!

Daniels

Should be shunted to DT as a permanent shift. Let him come in and spell Al and Grif on pass downs. Cut Wynn. Move HB to Sam. This would allow Orakpo to put his hand down as his primary function. On obvious running downs Daniels would sub in at DE and Orkapo would shift back to SAM (or let HB take care of Sam full time, and spell Orakpo on obvious run downs). This opens up a roster spot, cuts fat at the deepest position (especially with Montey hopefully recovering), gives Orakpo a shot at what he’s doing best and maintains a very flexible line.

In my mind the issue with a 3-4 is that Carter ends up sitting too much. Carter is self admittedly a hands down kind of guy, and he is simply too light to effectively play DE in a 3-4. Wilson wouldn’t be bad at OLB since he can rush and hasn’t been atrocious in coverage (not that I’ve seen him in coverage too much, going mainly off of statements by Blache and Olividotti (spelling?)), but if your putting your 11 best on the field Carter has to be on the list, and getting him on a 3-4 without making him stand isn’t possible unless he does nothing but rush the passer, in which case it might as well be a 4-3.

TTB!
