A Project for you all, I think this will be interesting
In my time following the NFL and particuarly lately with the disaster that is our O-Line I have been giving a lot of thought to what positions really are the most important in the NFL, and where you need to focus your finite Cap Money if you want to Compete for a Superbowl, so I have devised a project that I need your help with, (by your help I mean I need you guys to do basically all of the work)
I want to look back at the last 20 Superbowl Teams (so the AFC and NFC champions) and go through the teams rating each starters ranking in the league for his position. SO for the Broncos SB winners for instance you would ahve Elway listed as the number 1,2 or 3 QB probably for that year, for the Ravens 2000 team you would probably have Ogden as the number 1 left Tackle
but here is the rub, all skill positions in particular have to be ranked relative to a "Leage Average Help position"
So your QB and RB have to have their League Ranking adjusted for their O-Lines effectiveness, so this year for instance Peterson very well may be the Best RB in Football and after factoring in his great O-Line you may still judge him to be the Best but you NEED TO FACTOR IT IN TO your rankings, same with WR's you need to factor in the play of the QB when ranking them, so Reggie Wayne may be a highly rated WR, but you cant rank him up top just on stats because you have to factor in the advantage he gets from having Peyton Manning throwing him the ball.
Anyway after we have done these rankings I want to look for a pattern and see if Championship teams do all share certain positions that have Better Than Average or Elite players, and even to see if there is a pattern where Championship Teams all have the same weakness, so it could be argued that wasting high picks on that position is a waste because it does not correlate to Championships.
This way all the arguments about what we need to draft next year can be resolved because we may find some suprising results, For Example and I doubt this will be the case BTW but we may find that an above average QB is nice, but is a luxury and not a neccesity, or we may find that an Elite Centre has been on the majority of Championship teams even though it is generalyl seen as the least important Line Spot
Any questions please let me know if I have not made myself clear, but I think this would be a very worthy exercise

I'm exhausted
just thinking about this. Was having more fun regarding the model I proposed under your “Fred Davis, I Like the Sound of This” post. Want to chew on it a bit though. It seems to be a very subjective way to evaluate a team as it takes the subjective player rating and adds more subjective thought on the related players.
At least in my model it has some “consensus-value-basis” in that you can argue potential value by their draft position and make another assessment based on their trade-ability value.
All good stuff.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
you are right of course
But the subjective part is one of the reasons I put it up here, you see I could have done this myself, but I figured the more ppl that create their lists, then you can get an average, but still it would still be subjective. no doubt.
