I was actually concerned
that in our current situation certain groups might start piling on a la this clown. (And I in no way intend to disparage Clowns.) If anything, posts like his will just serve to further galvanize our fan base. They can take away the FO competence of our team, but they can’t take away our tradition or our name.

Hell of a first post....
but pas is right……no sympathy here. And how the hell is the “Chiefs” offensive! To me that’s like saying a team named the “Quarterbacks” is offensive. They are using the name of a political position in the indian community. As far as the name Redskins goes, I could see how one would think it’s racist, but not in this context. The iconic representation in the Skins logo shows a stout and brave representation of a semi-lost culture in America. I feel like it is more of a tribute. If you do your homework and research……the indians activist groups that want the name changed want damages! It isn’t the name……they want money…..which is why their attempts have failed. Their cause, to this point, hasn’t been true. If it ever came to the point of having to change the name, I feel like they would just shorten it to Skins anyhow…..that is how most in this area refer to them anyway! Keep your hate off here!

by angryandy on Nov 5, 2009 10:54 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
How do you reconcile that with the
atmosphere of hero worship that surrounds sports in this country. If nothing else, athletes are expected to be role models for our kids. What is so degrading about that?
BTW – I think you are a total poser as you continually refer to “Indians” in your remarks when most of us refer to them as Native Americans. If you want to bait us on this issue, fine. But don’t speak for Native Americans, when you clearly don’t understand the issues or even the feelings of true Native Americans, many of whom are proud to be referenced by a pro-football team with our respect and traditions. Bugger off, laddie.

Why?
Answer that….why is any representation of “Indians” (Native Americans douche-bag) in sports degrading???? What about Lacrosse? It was started by the Iroquois and Huron tribes. It was called Baggataway and was one of the first known team sports ever played on this continent. If you know anything about Lacrosse…..you will see how that game has been modified creating football as well as hockey. If any culture has ever deserved to be honored with a representation in American sports, it is the Native Americans! Scott E was right….you are an ass-clown!

Well...
the groups sue for money because that’s their only legal recourse. There aren’t proper laws in place to protect Native Americans from being belittled and marginalized in our country. If you look at it historically, they’ve always had to bring lawsuits in these types of situations. No one really cares when Native American stereotypes are flouted in professional sports. Yes, we have a logo that is sincere and respectful. But, as much as I struggle to admit it, we have a name that is highly offensive. People would be up in arms about the “Wetbacks” or the “Spearchuckers” but, since this is “just” a Native American stereotype we’re using, it’s somehow socially acceptable. And, no, we’re not as bad as the Cleveland Indians, with that oh-so-terrible caricature, but we’re only one step above them.

Its interesting that
this person referenced “Indians” being one of the offensive nicknames, then went on to say
American Indians activists
Seriously, does this world not have enough problems to worry about that people can’t leave our beloved football team alone?
by CarverM on Nov 4, 2009 10:17 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
First of all !!!!!
An organization that is trying to deem certain words as racisit should not call themselves “American Indians” if they are offended by any Americanized given names. Indians come from India! Most of US people that fit in the given term “Indian” prefer to call ourselves Native American. If you want to come on a fan based blog site spouting that their team is racist you are not going to find friends. You might not want to fit into a crowd that uses the same “RACIST” words they claim insult them in their organizations name.
Us real Native Americans
find the Washington Redskins as a reminder of a tough and strong people. Those that want to stomp their feet in protest but then say all will be forgiven for a dollar amount do not represent the rest of the NAtive American in a good light.
The Clevland Indians should however change their logo. I think that we can all agree that it is a little over the line.

Who said
the Political Correctness movement was ever a positive force in our society? It’smostly just a university based form of liberal terrorism. And I’m pretty liberal, but in the extreme ways PC has manifested itself it has mostly been an infringement of free speech to the detriment of the English language and has ruined or prohibited the careers of a lot of well qualified academics.
Sorry, not changing my football team’s name based on the misconception that it is intended to hurt or defame anyone or any group.

It doesn't matter
if it’s intended to hurt or defame anyone. The fact is that it does hurt and defame people. The Green Bay Packers aren’t offending any meat packers. Birds of prey aren’t holding protests over the Atlanta Falcons. The City of New Orleans isn’t being sued by Mother Theresa’s estate.
But “Redskins” is a term that causes emotional and psychological pain for many people. Are we going to discount that by saying that we’re not going to allow ourselves to be censored? Look, I love the Redskins, and I hate saying this, but we do have an offensive name. Do I expect that to change? No. Dan Snyder can afford better lawyers than any group of Native Americans, and the courts have shown that they don’t even want to touch this issue, much less rule against the team. I don’t see it changing, but I surely won’t be a person crying if it does.

I could understand if.....
Redskins was a more common derogatory term……fuck dude…..I have never heard that term anywhere other than the Washington Redskins. It’s not like the “n” word, or “cracker”, or “wetback”! It’s just not a common term…..I am part Native American (Cherokee)…..and have never, once in my life….heard the term “Redskin” in any derogatory way! Any of the 3 aforementioned above, and yes, I would be offended! The term “Indian” offends me more than Redskin. To me, and my family, “Indian” is the same as calling someone the “n” word, while Redskin is the same as calling someone black! All, that aside……there are ways to take things to court that has nothing to do with money. If you do some research…..you would see, these groups are always out for damages. It’s not just “change the name”, it’s give me some money for the financial damage you have caused me by calling me Redskin! It’s BS and just people trying to get something for nothing.

I’ve seen this question “debated” on other sites, and many, many Native Americans have said exactly the same thing – that they are quite proud to have a football team with our traditions with the name Redskin. As you stated, you cannot put the term into the same class of derogatory stereotypes (examples you provided) when the word just doesn’t register in that way – not by the people using the word or the people to whom it used to refer. I say used to, because the modern meaning/connotations of the term are more closely associated with an NFL football team and not it’s hundred years ago slang.

by Scott E on Nov 6, 2009 11:12 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That's wrong
There is no way to do this other than to sue. They’re not just suing for damages, they’re also suing for the rights to the name, which would effectively force the Redskins to change their name. If racism was illegal in this country, they would have another means of recourse, but it isn’t, so they don’t.
In regards to your not being offended by the name: that’s fine, but that doesn’t change the fact that many people are offended by the name. I’ve known multiple black people who have said that they’re not offended by white people using then n-word, but that does not give me free reign to use that word. The fact is that words have history, and the history of the word “redskin” is one of racism and bigotry. By saying that it’s not “as bad” as another word doesn’t change the fact that it is bad. Shouldn’t it be obvious how offensive it is when you see people spending years paying for high priced lawyers trying to get the name changed?

What I am saying is.....
they don’t have to sue for money…….which they always have! That is why it doesn’t make it through court……it always makes the court question the reason for changing these names! They could just sue for ownership of the word or name! The court has to take into account the history and financial impact this name has on both parties, as well as the true intentions of both parties! Are the Redskins intentionally hurting anyone with their name? Are the plaintiffs trying to get money for something that has probably made their life no more difficult than life already is, during their generation? When it comes to anything involving racism, things would be a lot smoother if people weren’t trying to profit off their ancestors struggles! I understand your opinion, and part of me is sympathetic to the cause, but there is a reason this has been an issue that has failed to be “resolved” and it all lays on intentions!

And finally...
you make it sound like any and all references to Native Americans (not “American Indians Activists”) is inherently derogatory. I can assure you it isn’t. If that’s your perception, the fault lies in you.

Grow up..
common now there is racism all over the world and guess what, it’s not going anywhere atleast not in our generation, what you have to look at is whether it is ment to be derragatory (sp) or not. the Redskins was chosen because the fierce nature in which some Indians Fought, just like the Vikings or the Fighting Irish… Now maybe the skins don’t fairly represent those fierce tribes now, so i could see basing an arguement on misrepresenting your ancestors but you gotta take that up with Snyderatto… but seriously who cares…

No? Then shut the $%* up. I am and i have no problem with the name, in fact im proud to wear my Redskins jersey on gameday. If you have nothing better to do than trying to convince others of your narrow minded view under the false pretense that your helping others, maybe you should donate some time to a local charity or non profit organization so you can actually do some good instead of trying to convince others about something you have no right to argue about.

Ya know, as an over the road trucker, I spend a lot of time driving through and on Indian (Native American) reservations. On one of four cars and pickups, you’ll see a Redskins bumper sticker. I would imagine a sports fan watching TV on the Navajo Rez is more concerned with why they are so bad this year than the name…

Had to jump in here. Skinsfan28 brings up an interesting point. I am Irish-American and there’s a college football team called the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Their mascot? A motherf’ing leprecaun! Am I supposed to be offended by this? Well, no, I am not, mostly due to the fact I can’t stand Notre Dame but also for the fact that NAMES don’t define who I am! Hell, I call myself a mick and a cracka ass cracka and I think it’s funny. I don’t know many Native Americans but the ones I do have never even brought the subject up. Redskins is associated with a football team, never have I heard it used as a derogatory statement. Are Native Americans suing Jack Daniels and Jim Beam for destroying their culture? The U.S. government for decimating their population and sticking them on reservations? Mazola margarine for the classic commercial “What your people call corn, we call maize” with a woman in full Native American garb? Embrace your culture and everything that goes with, good and bad…… McRedskin fan out!
