Ask The Falcoholic!
Hey, 'Skins fans!
Those of you who have long memories may remember when I first broke into SB Nation a few years back. Hogs Haven was a good friend of The Falcoholic in those days, and I still like to pop over here and give things a read from time to time. Blah blah blah.
But that's now why I'm here. I'm here because we're playing you guys this weekend, and you're likely burning with questions about the Atlanta Falcons. If that's not what you're burning with, please see a doctor. Please feel free to direct any and all questions about Matt Ryan, our close loss to the Saints or our fortunes in 2009 this way and I'll be happy to answer them.
Also, please Recommend this post so that it will remain up top for those who have questions all week long. Thanks, and here's to a great game!

I notice
That the flacons have previously beaten other teams, is this going to be a problem since the redskins seem to prefer losing to teams that havn’t won yet this season?

Prediction
You all are coming off a couple tough losses, do you think you all will beat up the Redskins to make a statement especially coming back home or do you see it being a close game?

It's hard to say
We’re going to come out fired up and wanting to make someone pay for the last couple of weeks, but you guys can put a stop to us if you concentrate on knocking Matt Ryan off balance and putting together slow, methodical drives that eat up a lot of time. I’ve learned not to predict blowouts, lest the Football Gods strike me down.

What is the one thing.....
that you are most concerned about coming into this game, offensively and defensively?

Apparently...
nothing. Hard to blame him.

Offensively
I’m concerned about you getting pressure on Matt Ryan, throwing off his rhythm and forcing him to make some bad throws. We don’t tend to win games where he has trouble.
On the defensive side, as weird as this might sound, I’m worried about Fred Davis. We don’t typically defend well against tight ends and the kid looks like he can flat-out catch.

Is it just me or can't I let it go
Yes, I see a team which can win some games and there will not be a game going into that game where I will think the Redskins cannot win.
I believe the Redskins can beat Atlanta.
I believe the Redskins can beat NO
I fear more the Raiders

I'm with you dr.....
I know the old saying is “any given sunday”, but this part of me doesn’t think it applies. We show these flashes of a great team, on both sides of the ball. Just can’t win a game with 2 mins of flash. I feel like these Skins can legitimately beat any team ( mainly bc the D keeps it close), but they fall short, all the time. I don’t have great expectations for the remainder of the season……but I do have high hopes if that makes any sense!

I read on ESPN of SI before your MNF game against the Saints
that you have woeful corners, and have real trouble stopping big plays from oppostions teams. Because of this do you in any way fear what Campbell will do to you on those few occasions he has time to throw, or do you think our poor offence evens out your poor secondary???

I love this question....
on so many levels!!!!!
by shvd98z24 on Nov 3, 2009 5:45 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Of course I fear
But our corners aren’t so much woeful as they are undersized. If you want to see something truly impressive, watch corner Brent Grimes pick off a Drew Brees pass this week. He gets like six feet of air.
The guy you’ll want to pick on, most likely, is Chevis Jackson. He’s still learning this whole starting thing.

That Grimes
intercept was jaw-dropping the way he got off the ground so high and on time to complete the pick. Amazing!

What do you credit with the Falcons turn around the last few years?
Is it purely coaching and a raft of young talent, or does it go deeper, into better front office management?
Also, from a purely “This game is next on Sunday perspective”, which players (on both Offense and Defense) do the Redskins need to have a very poor game to see a Redskin victory this week? Who are your biggest threats (outside the obvious ones) who contribute to the team but don’t make the headlines?
by BillWard on Nov 3, 2009 8:52 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
It's all of those things
Mike Smith is a good coach with a good set of coordinators below him. We’ve drafted exceptionally well and brought in talent, which also speaks well to General Manager Thomas Dimitroff. He’s been an absolute godsend. This team is doing more or less everything better than they have in years past, and it’s a joy to behold.
You’ll need to stop Matt Ryan’s passing and slow down John Abraham to keep it going in this one. Abe’s had a subpar year, rushing the passer wise, and he’ll be chomping at the bit to get to Campbell.
Biggest single threat that you might not know about is Eric Weems. Great kick returner, solid punt returner and a guy who can be dangerous in the receiving game. We’ll see what happens this weekend.

John Abraham: Over/Under sacks against Heyer: 3.5
I know Abraham has a nagging foot injury, but even a 1.5 legged Abraham can do a lot of damage against the Skins O-line…any word yet on the severity of his injury?
by KevinE on Nov 3, 2009 9:50 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
in the same article
I read that Atlanta are sometimes dropping Abraham into pass coverage instead of rushing him on every down, PLEASE GOD LET ATLANTA CONTINUE THIS TREND THIS WEEK
btw i’ll take the overs, if you allow me to incule 5 QB pressures as 1 Sack
then it will be 2.5 sacks and 8 QB pressures

you know what the saddest thing about my post you replied to here was
That I have absolutely no idea who your owner is, basically all I know about the Falcons is the Vick Saga and Bobby Petrino bailing early on you….. yet still even with this being the main basis of my Atlanta knowledge I would still take your ownership over ours…. Crazy Crazy times to be a skins fan

Right underneath the body of the main article…..you will see the tabs for “email”, “print” and then there is one that says “rec”! Just click on “rec”! You should do this to any post or comment you feel is worth other people reading! The more recs something gets….the higher it stays in relevance on the sites!

Redskins Bye Week Atlanta Short Work Week
How do you think the Redskins bye week, which gives them more time to prepare for this game, coupled with the Falcons short work week due to the Monday night game might effect the outcome?
At 2-5 it seems the Redskins players have a chip on their shoulder and have had time to recover from all the bumps and bruises.
Atlanta is coming off of what seemed to me to be a very physical and emotional game against the Saints. Couple that with a short workweek and the Redskins coming off of a bye week is the perfect combination for an upset. Do you agree?
How is the team recovering from the physical New Orleans game? Are the RB and QB banged up? How about the O-line?
by Kurtstack on Nov 5, 2009 9:51 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
not Dave but.....
The Falcons are getting used to playing teams coming off bye weeks (Bears WK5, Dallas WK6, Redskins WK8, Giants WK10). Saying that, is kinda like saying “We’re getting used to getting punched in the face”. (even if your used to it, your still getting punched in the face) You add in WK7 @ NO, and WK9 @ Giants; that equals a real crappy schedule. We’re hurting (just look at the mid-week injury report), tired (from all those “fresh” teams lately), and kinda in low spirits (first time we have lost back to back games since the new regime and QB has taken over). So your definitely catching us at a good time for an upset, especially considering we are at your place. I may be alone here, but I’m just not sure we have the “raw emotions” needed to come out and attack you guys like we should. I think we as Falcons fans understand more than anyone how a team that looks horrible on paper can actually be head and shoulders better than the record or play indicates. Dimitroff, Smith and Ryan absolutely made this organization better, but there was a good team hiding behind all those M Vick/Petrino stories a couple years ago. I guess what I’m getting at is this: I believe you guys are much better than you look, and I might (don’t laugh) actually be more afraid of this game than last weeks against NO. We pretty much knew we would have to play a perfect game against the Saints to win, and almost did. Our guys have a tendency to play to the level of competition a bit, and if we play to to the level your record indicates, we’re in trouble. — I think at this point most Falcons fans are waiting for the bottom to fall out (45+ years of not having back to back winning seasons) and believe very much in Murphy’s Law when it come to our beloved team.

Matt Ryan the past few weeks
Well, we all know how great Matt Ryan is and he came out firing this year but has kind of hit a rough patch recently, which is natural and everyone goes through it. Still, I’ll admit while I haven’t seen him play much early this year I have seen the past couple prime time games. Do you think his turnovers/inaccuracy are merely a matter of poor decision-making or pressing since the run game isn’t as electric at times? Or is it maybe an issue with the o-line like I’ve heard? Or would you say its a mixture?
by Reg O on Nov 5, 2009 4:29 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
again not Dave but....
Matt Ryan has been put up to such a high status (albeit of his own making) that he probably never had a chance to meet the expectations this year. He is undoubtedly a very very good QB. Which is really saying something considering the busts that typically are drafted high in first round (I know, I know, I’m preaching to the choir). He’s still only 1 1/2 years into this league though. It’s expected teams will start to get the better of him when they actually start game planning against his strengths. The key for him is if he can now adjust to the defenses. I have all the confidence in the world he is going to make those adjustments (he’s very smart, he works hard, and really hates losing). I also think that many of the mistakes he has made so far this year are because he is trying so hard to make up for the dismal running game. Until last week, Turner was running so soft I thought he had to be hurt. Norwood is hurt, again. Snelling (our 3rd stringer) is hurt. We signed a Stecker off the street and he had like 5-10 snaps a week later. When you aren’t getting anything form your running game, your passing game can’t be just good, it needs to be great. Ryan understands this I’m sure and it seems he started forcing throws a bit. If you look back at the Saints game, you’ll see that 2 of the 3 Interceptions weren’t really Ryan’s fault. One was tipped (endzone to Gonzalez) and one was a missed call (Defender should have just thrown White to the ground and sat on him considering the refs were asleep). He really isn’t playing much different than last year, just different results when teams are stacking the box compared to sitting on throws. He still makes very good decisions with the ball 90% of the time, handles blitzers well, and can throw a good deep ball. Not to mention he is facing much better teams overall this year (damn 11-5 record, just kidding). The O-line is better because they don’t have Redman or Leftwich holding the ball for years in the pocket, not from any added skill or size since the “Dead Bird” Era (anything before 2008). Thus they really aren’t playing any worse. The coaches have been getting way above talent level for a couple years now. We all have to keep in mind, Ryan threw a lot of interceptions in college. He’s probably going to throw a few in the pros too. Overall his play is about where he was last year, and that is understandable. You would like to think Gonzalez would make a huge difference in Matty Ice’s performance, but he also can’t depend on those 40 yard dump passes to Norwood anymore. He’ll be fine.
