Redskins vs Broncos: Upset of the Week?
The bucking Broncos are losers of their last two straight games, at home, and now have to fly cross-country on a short week to play the battered Redskins. Granted, the Mile High Club's losses were against two of the best teams in the league (BAL and PIT); however, former Broncos LB/D lineman Karl Mecklenberg details their major flaw:
During the bye, teams evaluate other teams to see what weaknesses can be exposed. Baltimore had the same bye week as Denver and used their time to notice Denver's defensive tendencies. They saw that the Broncos were rotating guys into their defensive scheme very quickly. That's why Joe Flacco ran the no huddle offense, even though it's uncharacteristic of the Ravens. The Steelers saw the Ravens were successful with this, so Ben Roethlisberger went to the no huddle as well. They also found some weaknesses in the Broncos offensive line. The season is so long that it's all about making adjustments as you go along. The teams that can do that successfully make it far into the playoffs.
After two weeks, it's obvious Josh McDaniels will be making adjustments to fix this hole. The funny thing is, he may not have to given the sorry state of the OLine, that will now see Chad Rinehart starting at RG over Will Montgomery. Zorn addressed his distaste for the sacks on the 3-foot drops. All that aside, the Redskins played a great second half against Atlanta. The oline created holes and Betts found them. Who's to say they can't accomplish this again?
To get back on track this week against the Redskins, Mecklenburg offers advice for the Broncos:
"They've got to protect Orton. He's gun shy. He got so beat up in Chicago that when he starts to feel some pressure, that throws his game out of whack."
A second way to get back on track according to Mecklenburg is to "Run the ball more effectively. Peyton Hillis needs to get involved more and a shift in the blocking scheme could be effective, so we're not so one dimensional."
This is where Blache needs to bring the house almost every snap. We've see Orton in Chicago and now in Denver, he does not handle pressure well at all.
Some Josh McDaniels quotes from MHR...
On why the Broncos have had difficulty running the ball the past two weeks:
"We've played against two good defenses, and that's not an excuse that we are going to use. We have got to do better than what we have done, whether it be execution, whether it be mistakes (or) whether it be just somebody made a nice play on defense. We are playing against physical teams, and that's what we play against every week. We've got to do better at the point of attack. We've got to do better with the ball in our hands. We've got to do better in terms of scheming something if we can do that to help ourselves, but we haven't lost faith in our ability to run the football or play good offense here. We've just got to go back to work and do better."
Seems simple enough. Take the run away, pressure Orton by all means, and play physical on both sides of the ball.

How can he do that when he barely brings the front door?

I’m not sure he even knows where the sidewalk is to bring the front door somewhere.

The big if here is...
Can the redskins run a hurry up offense? They’re used to doing it almost every game since they’re losing, but whatever Zorn comes up with be laughable compared to the Steelers HU offense.
by KevinE on Nov 12, 2009 2:19 PM EST via mobile reply actions 0 recs
then someone should gag him when sherm decides to go to hurry up
Does JC call the call in the hurry up or is it still coming from upstairs?

Good question
Zorn and Sherm Smith said they like to script their drives before hand. So majority of it is prob that format. They prob don’t k ow themselves. I’ll ask Matt Terl.
by KevinE on Nov 12, 2009 2:43 PM EST via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
Don't they just script the opening couple of drives?
You can’t really script more than 20 plays or so

it makes sense that they would script the hurry up too
you need to get to something quick, it’s on JC’s arm already. they just tell him the correct number/color combo and keep it moving.

Yea
And what’s ironic is the 1st quarter is the redskins statistically worst quarter.
What I meant is while the D is on the field for one of the opponents’ 9 minute drives, they could be scripting the next one.

Our only hope is
to play our young players and see if they can step it up with enthusiasm. Worked out pretty well in the 3rd Qtr last week. I’ll consider it a “win” if they let the kids play in prep for next year.

Our only hope is
the entire Bronco’s team comes down with Swine Flu….even then, they most are 2 TD favorites.

Not likely
Vinny needs Thomas and Kelly on the field as much as possible to save his job. Those 2nd round picks r killing this team. Davis is the only maybe but at this point Yoder is still better than him. Ugh. I’m all pissed off again.
by KevinE on Nov 12, 2009 3:28 PM EST via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
I like Yoder
That was a sweet catch for the TD – even though Yoder is the “blocking TE” I’m not sure Davis could have pulled it off.

I literally just spit my coffee all over the desk...
Hurry up offense? Oh god. “You can’t be serious man! YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!” J.McEnroe
I’m not sure our defense is going to be able to stop their pass game. I think our ranking is a little overrated because of those first 6 weeks. Our secondary….
If we want to pull off an upset, the D-Line will need to bring it every down. Get Orton real scurd then maybe he’ll start throwing the picks. If they resort to running it, the line and backers will mop it up.
On offense we have to run it… alot. Our passing game isn’t going to take off. Campell looks like he’s playing in traffic every game. I think we should run the ball, eat up clock, and hope for a few big plays over the top. It’s become alot harder to sustain passing drives with Cooley out.

I'm sure our DBs will
play at least 12 yds off their receivers, even though they don’t throw the ball that far very often. Our only chance is if Denver’s players and coaches fell out of their chairs laughing at the film of our DBs and injured themselves.

Not sure...
I only have public broadcasts on the digital receiver so I only get One.
I was hoping we would be competitive this year so they would air some of the Skins games…. but sadly that’s not the case. The best we can look forward to is if when we play Monday nights, or if we play a really good team and they decide to air it.
I’m hoping for the games against the Cowboys or Saints to get aired.
by DCtoAustralia on Nov 12, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
ive got the same viewing choice as you
how bad is ONE screwing us though with the broadcasts during work hours live (nothing to complain about there) but then replaying it at midnight-3am, i mean if I cant watch it live cos I’m at work, I dont know how a 3am replay helps me,
I think we may get the Saints game and one of the Cowboys games, I’m pretty sure we get the game thats broadcast across the country in the states (i.e the one that goes to all states that do not have a team involved in that state or region)
So R U in sydney or where are you at anyway???

Yeah I’m in Sydney.
The games they are playing at 3am are actually the live ones. I was waking up the first few weeks to listen to the radio broadcast streams at 3am, but I’ve lost that enthusiasm. Now I just wake up normal time every Monday and check to see how much we lost by.

I've done the same thing (although with Daylight saving its 5am now)
i ditched it after the Carolina game, something about the way we lost that just did my head in.
The next Skins game that is telecast on Fox or One we should meet up and watch it at Star City though, be good to watch a game with someone cares about the team rather than people I bore to death with my constant attempts to convert them to the NFL

Portis is 100% out for Sunday.
Sadly, that helps the Redskins chances.
by KevinE on Nov 12, 2009 3:55 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think we should
IR him for the year. At this point, since it is unlikely we will be able to unload him, let’s protect our “investment” and see if we can get another good year out of him with him healthy and running behind a new line. Even if the new line hasn’t gelled, it would have to be better than this one.

I agree
I’ve always tried to support Portis, but Betts looked like an actual running back with running back moves out there on Sunday. Compared to Portis, Betts actually looked fast against the Falcons, so that should tell you something about the way Portis has looked this year.

I think Portis has simply been run into the ground.
He has taken too many hits. He doesn’t have the jump anymore. I like the guy but he really just seems to be out of gas at this point.

WE WILL WIN THIS WEEK>>>>HAVE FAITH<<<<<<<<
Reasons I voted that yes we will win.
DEFINITES
The one weakness of our D is the occasioanly Big Play we give up, but Orton can barely throw the ball beyond the line of scrimmage so we will get a lot of stops.
Their weakness is the interior of their O-Line collapsion has shown by Ngata and Hampton, well Big Al will run amok this week and B-Rak will benefit from it flying off the edge.
BEtts will play like a man possessed and now instead of Portis looking to fall forward at the first contact and turn a 2 yard gain into 3 yards, Betts will explode through the gaps for some big running plays
HOPEFUL BUT WITH SOME CONFIDENCE
Someone, anyone on our O-Line will just decide enough is enough and F***ing man up for once, I can feel it, all week the over under on Dumervil sacks will be set at like 5.5 so someon in the O-Line will decide to take it personally and act like, you know, a man and show some F****ing pride and have a monster game.
Thomas will step up and catch for a 100 yards.

Not to the bank but to the bookie, much better interest/odds
and in this Global Financial Crisis probably safer too!!
Seriously Smuts, i’m not drinking Kool Aid here, no one seriously beleives we are going to go winless the rest of the year and sometimes in the NFL and what makes it great to watch, lesser teams just match up well against the weaknesses of better teams and I think this is one of them games, Denver has just come off a MNF game, so short week, they are on the road
and surely just once our O-Line whether they lack the talent or not, just has to have some F***ing PRide and play above themselves jsut once
I think this is the week

I soooo totally want
to believe in this, but expect to end up dashed against the rocks again. I can see all of your points happening except I’m not buying Thomas and 100yds. Maybe Mitchell, though, but 100 is asking a lot when I expect we will run more than ever this weekend.

the Global Financial Crisis, didnt even goe into a technical recesion (2 quarters of negative growth) never mind a real one (massive job losses) so our dollar is soaring, its in the mid 90 cent range at the moment. We were down around the mid 50 cent rage 4 years ago

the housing market took a huge hit I remember tho
by KevinE on Nov 12, 2009 6:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
not like for you guys
in fact a slowdown in house price rises was probably a good thing to be honest, the prices were just going out of control. In Australia we have this ridiculous tax break where you can claim a deduction for interest on investment propertys, so all these people (and I mean just normal familys not property developers) were buying second and third homes and renting them out, and the tax system encouraged it.
So what that mean is that first home buyers were screwed, because all these ppl who already have homes are bidding at Auctions or whatever for investment properties and driving the prices ever higher (simple supply and demand) and then these ppl (like me) trying to buy their first home are priced out of the market, but not just priced out, as we also then pay taxes that go to subsidising (by paying my tax whilst they get deductions) the very people who are pricing me out of the market and I am renting off, it is absolutely outrageous.
So when the GFC hit, credit dried up a little bit for these housing speculators so there was alittle less demand for houses and prices stabilised, although now they are skyrocketing again as people realise that Australia has pretty much escaped unscathed.
You see the beautiful thing for Australia is most of our company taxes come from mining, well mining companies cant go offshore and outsource, they have to dig where the minerals are, so that means we can charge relatively high company tax rates, and also, we are in SE ASia and sell a lot of stuff to China and India who are booming, so the “Lucky Country” as we were once called, got lucky again,
Seriously if you didnt watch the news, you would have no idea there is an economic crisis happening out there,
