Right Guard and Tackle 2009 Options For The Redskins

With half of the games remaining in the 2009 season is it appropriate to ask questions about the potential replacements NOW?  For example who are the players out there as free agents that may be better than Heyer at right tackle or any of the various right guards the Skins have attempted to use since Thomas went down?

How would Heyer stack up against Jon Runyan? Kwame Harris? Terrance Metcalf? Oliver Ross? Marvel Smith? Anthony Davis? George Foster?

Tackle:  Metcalf, Terrence Career  Games (G) 84 Games Started  (GS)   25;  Ross, Oliver   Career    G  89   GS  53; T  Smith, Marvel  Career G 111  GS     1; Davis, Anthony    Career    G 47   GS 32; Foster, George   ( CLE 1st rd 2003 2nd OL selected) Career G   68   GS 57;  Shelton, L.J.  Career G 146 GS  127.

Skin right guard attempts versus (see below)?

Buenning, Dan    Career G 36  GS 23; Guards Lehr, Matt   (TEN)  Career     G 98     GS 51; Paul McQuistan Career G  35  GS  12;  Kendall Simmons -

Center Ghiaciuc, Eric  Career G 48     GS 42;

Even if these players were only active one season would the roster spots be worth it?

I would rather not

bring in some washed-up veteran to try and somehow salvage the season. Maybe a young guy to test out as a future prospect, though.

I believe we

have gone down the FA path too many times. Let’s start fresh.

OOPS

Didn’t read the post correctly – the fine print said “NOW.” I was thinking of these guys as potentials for next yr to supplement the draft.

Great post, thanks for the food for thought

Look at the big picture- getting one of these guys may be useful. If Jason Campbell gets sacked 5x per game from here on out, we don’t learn anything. There aren’t a lot of young linemen with potential out there to be had. If we want to see about Thomas, Kelly, and Davis, we do have to keep JC alive long enough to throw them some passes. A lot of the guys jefferson1935 brought up are retreads, but still pretty young- like Kwame Harris.

Unfortunately I think Marvel Smith is retired for good with a back injury, and I also doubt that Jon Runyan will be coming back. Goerge Foster is a guy who would be an interesting project, but would not be in good enough shape to bring in mid-season.

I love the Dan Buenning suggestion. If he’s available, I think he could actually be one of the more solid players on this line. Anthony Davis and Oliver Ross are also two guys that I think would be upgrades at right guard.

L.J. Shelton is also a great idea. He is a better player than Heyer, and would be useful to back him up if nothing else.

IMO it would be useless

to bring in any more has-beens to try and patchwork a respectable o-line mid season. Lets just take our lumps with the guys we have, chalk up this season as one of the morst we’ve had in franchise history, and move on. I’m very worried about the 2010 draft. If we let JC go via free agency, we will obviously target a QB in the draft. This puts us behing the eight ball when it comes to drafting lineman in the later rounds. Given the fact we don’t have a 3rd rounder, we need to use our 2nd and 4th to grab two quality lineman. My question is how much quality will we be able to get? We will obviously use free agency to try and address some o-line needs, but I fear, in an uncapped year, that some of these sought after free agents (aka McNeil) will not be avaliable. We will end up signing some run-of-the-mill, over-the-hill, washed up vet, and our situation will not improve. We may have to look to trade some players to get what little value they have left to see if we can accumulate extra draft picks in the hopes of moving up into the earlier rounds. This whole offseason worries me, and were not even there yet.

really?

Are you actually saying you’d rather have every snap end in a Campbell sandwich from here on out because the season is lost anyway?

2010 draft

Assuming the Skins get to pick within the first 5 available offensive linemen in the 1st and 2nd rounds and using 2007and 2008 as the best measure of what the possibilities are:
2007 draft 1st 5 picks averaged 14 games started; 2008 draft 1st 5 picks averaged 12 games started. Due to byes the number of games possible for 2009 draft 1st 5 picks is close to the 2008 pattern with one player having no starts as yet (Andre Smith) and a few missing some of the first 7 or 8 games. In the 2009 draft 6 OL were selected in the 1st rd. and 8 in the 2008 draft.

The problem in 2009 is that the offensive line is not respectable and was not prior to the season endings for Thomas and Samuels, i.e., no depth.

NFL Offensive Line Talent Question

The following web page has a lot of good information on offensive line talent. IMO, it is not good to become dogmatic about all the ins and outs concerning talent evaluation such as sacks allowed by offensive linemen. The quarterback also plays into the equation by having a fast or slow release. Some players take longer to develop into starting quality than others. Winston Justice might be a case in point since he seems to have developed sufficiently to be the Eagles right tackle starter and the team did not bring back Jon Runyan.

Winston Justice taught this ignorant foreigner the true value of the O-LIne

for years I had always thought that the O-lines were all much of a muchness just a bunch of Fat Dudes who sort of cancelled each other out and that their value was overrated by commentators

And this was based on my stupid thought that Sacks were a much overrated stat, yeah I nievely thought all they mean is few yards lost, you get another go

but then one night I watched that Omenyoura mauling of Justice game, where he got like 7 sacks or something and it just seemed like every play he embarrased him (and to this day I will never understand why Philly refused to help him out with some double teams) but yeah, that was the night, a English MIgrant to AUstralia who had been watching NFL intermittently for 3 years learned the Value of the O-Line

YOu would sort of think a guy employed in NFL front offices most his adult life and with the fate of a once respected franchise in his slimy hands would have learned that at some stage too, no.

Maybe his sunnies block out the trenches when he watches the games, my god I hate them sunglasses

Good article by La Confora

About upcoming free-agents in what could be an uncapped year.

Looks to me like the only likely signing would be Kampman for a DE spot. But Rak and Jarmon have been showing some skills, and Andre Carter looks revitalized. So it looks like we’ll be turning to the draft for linemen.
