OK, it's almost game time, so I am in all-out HHTR mode. No bury Blache, no zap Zorn, no smack Snyder, and no viscerate Vinny. It's al about the field, and the guys taking it. I'm not gonna pummel the playcalling or slam the substitutions. I know this post is kinda late, but, oh well. What I AM gonna do is point out what we need to do to win this game, AND the rest of the games this season. That's right, I said it. I have the formula for us to go 14-2 fellas. I know it works, cuz I've seen it.
There's one thing that hasn't been talked about a whole lot, and it's kind of surprising because it's something the media usually harps on after ANY game we lose. Our balance. We've been a pass happy team all 3 games, and it's not working. We're passing the ball almost twice as much as we run it. That's not Redskins football. Ever since Joe Gibbs gave up Air Coryell for the Counter Trey the recipe for success in Washington has been controlling the line of scrimmage, thereby controlling the clock, thereby controlling the game. Now, I know what you're gonna say. "Out O-line can't control the line of scrimmage." Sure, that may be true. But if you ask ANY lineman, they'll tell you they'd rather run the ball then pass it. Next you'll say - "But Mr. Hutch, our running backs just aren't that good." It's POSSIBLE this is true as well. But WE DON"T KNOW. We've actually been averaging a decent number of yards per carry. And, whether you like Portis or not, anyone knows that he's most effective when he gets over 20 carries/game.
Now, here's the thing. For the first time in a LONG time, we have a stable of backs. Sure, some are unproven (Mason, Alridge), some are about used up (Betts, Cartwright), and one has a million miles on his tires (CP). But TOGETHER they can be effective. Add Sellers to the mi, and you don't have a running back committee , you have a running back BATTALION. Could this work? Again, who knows. It did for the Giants. Sure, some of our guys are very similar, but they all still offer something different. Portis' iron will rivals anyone in the LEAGUE. Betts, uh, can catch the ball. Rock has the determination of a German Shepherd digging for a dinosaur bone. Sellers is walking warehouse. Mason has the vision of hunting bird, and Alridge has the speed and moves of a lynx. SO why not utitlize them all, or at least a few of them. Instead of going 'change of pace', why not go 'change of look'?
Of course, this is the perfect game to do it in. And you know they're gonna try to do it to us. The Bucs are giving up 180 yards/game. Why not gouge them for over 200? Let's have a REDSKINS team with two 100 yard rushers in a single game for once. Mix up the runs, mix up the running backs, mix up the blockers. Run, run, run. Forget 8, make them stack NINE in the box. And THEN pass it. Sound familiar? No, I'm not talking about Norv Turner ball. I'm talking about Byner/ Riggs/Ervin setting up Ryp/Monk/Clark/Sanders to deliver the knock out blow. Campbell's been throwing for 260 yards/game, and it's gotten us no where. Meanwhile, we're not controlling the clock, the defense doesn't have time for a piss break, our O-line is wearing down, and the opposing defense is fresh. Let's take the game to THEM. Smash it down their throat. Let's RUN to set up the PASS. Let's play REDSKINS FOOTBALL!!!
