Explain something to this NFL novice please

G'day All

I have grown up in Australia after moving here from England when I was 10 years old, I adopted the Redskins as my team early in life but only really truly started following the NFL on a daily basis these last 5 years or so. after I had Cable TV for the first time and became addicted to ESPN, before that I jsut watched the Superbowl every year, which beleive it or not is very rare for ppl in this country.

Anyway what I need explained to me is the reputation of MIke Shanahan, NOW I get that he has rings, but it seems to me that he had one of the best QB's in the business for a very long time and  still relied on 4th quarter heroics, more disturbuingly it seems to me that he has spent the past 6 years in a very weak division with a QB who is highly rated (though I think Cutler is Overrated. ,many experts rate him highly so who am I to argue) and has achieved very little indeed.  I havent checked the exact stats but I think he has only made the Playoffs a couple of times since Elway and when there has done NOTHING of any value.

Surely we need a coach who has proven he does not need a great QB to succeed.  Again I could be wrong but didnt Cowher do well without anyone specieal under center, and Holmgren did well with Favre and got his rings, but he also took an average Seattle team to a SUperbowl and reguarly had them in the playoffs.

I just worry that if Shanahan had trouble navigating a Weak division, how the hell will he cope with the NFC EAST

Look I am probably wrong to worry about this and may have my facts screwed up and I look forward to being corrected if that is the case.

Dead on!

I agree MS is no savior, he had his day now its time to go away. We need patience, thats it . Dan ( who no doubt loves our team) needs to let the team build thru drafts and continuity. That goes for the coachs too. We live in the “right now” generation, no ones waits for anything, you cant do that with a football team, not in the NFL. Start with a O line , we have good DTs LBs , and Secondary G and T that where it starts. Why Draft a #1 QB and let him get crushed.(David Carr) But you need a coach that will be there more than a few months. Patience young Danielson Patience

If Snyder was half the fan

he claims to be would he not have a fixation on a quality O-Line, I just dont get how a self declared Redskins fan can look beyong the O-line when he gets control of the team, when it appears to my reading of Redskins history all of our success was predicated on a great O-line.

Also full disclosure….I should admit the Redskins struggles are all my fault, I adopted the team in 1992…… so basically the Skins had a lot of success starting just after I was born (1977) through to when I decided they were my team (1992) and as soon as I adopted them they fell away, So to all the rest of you fans……..I apologise!!

I admire your loyalty to the coaches we have, but the facts are Zorn is a gonner whether we like it or not. and Snyder wont go for a project Coach again, even with the success of McDaniels and Tolmin proving the value of young coaches, so who do you think out of the big names would be the best bet???

As I have made clear my beleif is that Shanahan is not the answer, and I thank you for agreeing with me……… so then who is the best candidate

until a real GM is hired

it almost dosen’t matter who the HC is. Currently, this team operates in a less than desireable manner. IMO until a football person is hired to make the personnel decisions, the coach, at best, can affect the outcome of few games.

by grandpa grouse on Oct 26, 2009 9:31 AM EDT reply actions

Agree it's not the coach

Zorn is not an NFL head coach and even with the right people and right front office structure I doubt if he could be succesful, however as the grouse states it all needs to start with a GM, a Football person who can then hire the right coach, sign the right people and build a team.

by dr WNC on Oct 26, 2009 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

we are DOOMED until we hire a competent GM. HOWEVER, I’m pretty certain I could get better results than Zorn as HC. First of all, I would delegate authority (which is a good idea for ANY rookie HC), BEFORE being forced to. Second, I would eliminate favoritism. If a guy looks better than another guy, he plays. No matter WHO’S in front of him. Meaning Marko Mitchell would get his shot. Maybe he wouldn’t do any better, but he sure as hell couldn’t do worse. Also, Jarmon would be in there instead of one armed Daniels, and B-Rak would start at the other end spot, with Carter rotating in. I would also experiment with Moore at FS, moving Landry back to SS to find out if he’s worth keeping. And last, but not least, I would get Mason back ASAP and start his ass PRONTO.

+1

Although, I don’t have the man-crush that you have for Mason so I don’t know if I’d start him.

I forgive you

but seriously, it IS time for a youth movement at RB. I mean, I have been as big a CP supporter as there is around here, but it’s time to cut the cord. Not that they will.

And you wanna know what’s REALLY sad? I’m pretty sure I’d take every BACKUP RB in the division over Portis right now.

by CJHutch on Oct 26, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree by a significant margin...

The G-Men and ‘Girls’ each have two backup backs better than how CP is playing even after you discount the differences in O-lines.. All would have scored on that 74 yd run last week, if for no other reason that they would have been practicing hard and not out of shape.

Remember CJ

that Snyder surely has his hand in who plays. He dosen’t pay those big salaries to watch the players sit on the bench.

by grandpa grouse on Oct 26, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Therein....

lies the fantasy in the fantasy football model of running a franchise. Snydo’s not going to pay big bucks for has beens and non-performers to sit on the bench. He’s got to play with his toys. Thereby suppressing competition for starters. Less competition, people gonna work less hard, etc. It’s a downward spiral from there.

I know

but if I was the coach, I would lock that little nincompoop in a room with lollipops and Lego blocks until the season is over.

And take his

Checkbook from him and use it when necessary, instead of using it every chance he gets.

In Shanahan's defense

He always could build up a great running game, with a lot of no-names who went on to do nothing after leaving Denver. Clinton Portis is the only guy who has left Denver to find success, and he did it by completely changing his running style. That shows what a good job Shanahan has always done at always having a quality offensive line, as well as running game and run-blocking scheme. The fact that he coached both Elway and Cutler shows that his lines have also been good enough at pass-blocking to allow QBs to shine (the line he built is helping cast-off Kyle Orton show off right now). So what he has prioritized on offense has been exactly what has been ignored for too long here: the offensive line. As coach, I think he’s probably over the hill. He would probably have similar success to Joe Gibbs’ second tenure here. A guy like Shanahan should probably be looking for a front-office, GM-type position at this point. Let a young guy get his shot on the sidelines — Parcells has shown that situation to work in Miami.

Good Points

As I said I am relatively new to following the NFL, plus I follow it from Australia where without the internet I get nothing, so this is the sort of stuff I need to find out.

You make a good point about ‘giving his QB’s a chance to shine"

Do you reckon JC will get that chance or Will Snyder make it a condition of employment that you jettison JC because the disparity between how dignified Jason is and how Grubby Snyder is, is so glaring that it cant be ignored and makes Snyder look even worse than he is

until

he started letting his ego get the best of him by drafting guys like Clarett too high, thinking he could make the EXACT same D-line that sucked in Cleveland do well for him, etc, etc. I always go back to this fact. If it weren’t for the Redskins, Shanahan would’ve been considered an awful personnel guy. We are the only team he fleece, and we allowed him to do it at least 3 times.

Less glamour, more dirt

Who needs the Superbowl when you have Tri-Nations?

by A-Frankie on Oct 26, 2009 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

HAHAHAHA

Unfortunately, although I ahve grown up in Australia I am English, so all the Tri-Nations means to me is a chance for more of my mates to rip on me when Australia smash England by about 10 try’s.

Tip for US sports lovers though, if you get the chance next year in about June thru JUly, there will be 3 games of a thing called “State of Origin” on Versus or some obscure cable channell, if you get get the chance watch it, I am sure you will enjoy it

Its the best of the best Vs each other in a sport called Rugby League, brutal contact, great athleticism etc, a really enjoyable spectacel if you give it a chacne
