Gibbs coming back?!?!?!?!
ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that there are rumors that Gibbs may return with a "Parcells" kind of role with the team in th offseason. Again....it's a rumor.....but I wanted to see what everyone thinks about that idea! I think it is a valid option and wouldn't have a problem with it. They say he would be the one advising on who should be hired as GM, Head Coach, etc. The one question I have is.....didn't he "advise" Snyder for the last 2 years? I love Gibbs....but part of me wonders if he is qualified to make that transition. On the other hand....he has built a force in Nascar!
Here's the link to the article:
Joe Gibbs could be taking a Tuna-style role in D.C.

And what happens
when Gibbs decides to retire again in 2-3 years? He is really freaking old and he can’t be useful for much longer (no offense grandpa grouse).
If this is true, and I doubt it is, it’s just Danny doing what he thinks will win back the fan base instead of what he thinks will set up the franchise to compete and be successful for many years to come.
It doesn’t make any sense; everyone in the entire football world knows exactly what Danny needs to do, and its not like if he does follow a winning formula it will lose him money. Get a young, up-and-coming GM prospect, give him the reins of the team, and just step back, watch approvingly, and open your check book ONLY when he asks you to.

no offense taken
but I do believe, if he were willing, he would be a great advisor to Snyder. And, as I keep saying, you will be this old too one day, if you’re lucky!!!!

It may not be true at all
It could be Danny boy leaking shyt to get the talk off his back for a week or so.

I think it could be plublicity....
but the reason I posted this was to get the consensus….like in my post….on one level…I feel like this could be a good thing….but on another level….maybe not! I was looking for a consensus opinion! I am a little upset KevinE took this down from the main page…..I don’t feel like I was trying to report a rumor….as much as see how the community felt about the idea! With the “Revolution” and all going on….you would think this would be a hot topic…..whether it was Florio….Rosenthal….or Riggins reporting this. Either way……as of this reply….in one way or another…..82% feel like this would be a good idea!

I tend to agree with Boo on this...
In the short term, this could work, only b/c ANYTHING is an upgrade, but Gibbs to me is past his prime. The game has changed so much and we need someone in here that has their pulse on all the players and college game.
Gibbs and Russ Grimm together could be something I would like to see. Too bad Snyder burned a bridge with Charley Casserly.

Why do you want Casserly back? Did you sleep through the whole 90s of Redskins football?

He's also the only person on earth who knew to draft Mario Williams not Reggie "the bust" Bush

I would rather have a GM hired and let him pick who to be head coach. Have the GM pick the right people to mold the team the right way. Having a figurehead run interference for Snyder is not the way to go. I think Gibbs is just a figurehead that will pick another yes man GM to Snyder.

Excellent points...
everyone in the entire football world knows exactly what Danny needs to do
The key really is getting a GM with the authority to make decisions and who can ID the talent we need for the system we employ. I don’t see Gibbs contributing much to this and see it more as a face saving gesture on Danny’s part.

I've said it before
And I’ll say it again. CHRIS POLIAN! For those who don’t know who he is, he’s the son of Bill Polian (President/GM of the Indianapolis Colts). I know Snyder hiring him is something that’s virtually impossible (because it makes too much sense) but I can dream can’t I?
I like Gibbs, but as others have already said, he’s past his prime and isn’t quite in tune with today’s football. Gibbs would be an upgrade over Cerrato, but Snyder needs to hire some young up and coming GM prospect, or anyone from the Patriots or Colts. But since this rumor is coming from Florio, that means it’s not going to happen anyway.

Once upon a time the Colts got lucky and drafted Peyton Manning first overall.
They never built a great team around him but thanks to Peyton’s heroics have managed to win 12 games in the last million years. The end.

It would be treading water
We need a GOOD gm and we need Snyder to FALL BACK.
Gibbs isn’t a cutting edge football mind, I don’t see him helping much.

Per O'Halloran
It is doubtful Gibbs is coming back. This is according to TWT blog:
If you look at what he is involved with, it makes more sense for him NOT to come back to this headache.

For now, it’s just a rumor.
Thus summarizes Mike Florio’s writing career.
Seriously, how did this make the front page?

Agreed. Taking it off now.
I front paged it bc we need some positive news on the homepage. Obviously I pulled a Cerrato not realizing it was Florio (he’d been quiet for too long)

Sorry about the instant negativity, I think y’all do a good job. Gibbs trying a comeback as a GM does not seem like good news to me, it seems like desperation and further tarnishment of his legacy

I wouldn't be dismissing this just yet
I can’t see Gibbs coming here to play a role as GM or coach, in fact Gibbs coming to stay in D.C. for any extended period of time is unlikely. However, The Dan is a control freak and just as a coach who coaches not to lose he operates in this same way, always scared, and that’s why Vinny is always around. He trusts him even though he’s an idiot and a loser. Asking Dan to got outside his bubble and bring someone else in is not in his nature, even though that’s what should be done. So who else does he have left to turn to? Who does he trust maybe even more than Vinny?
It’s going to be interesting to see if Gibbs plays any role in getting a real GM. This is where I can see Gibbs stepping in and helping Dan. The real challenge for Dan will always be kicking Vinny to the curb.

Gibbs did a good job of building this team
as best he could. He had to work with Cerrato that whole time and definitely made us a MUCH better team. His last year, our old linemen were at their peak, and I assume he would have invested time and energy into improving that part of the team going into 08 and 09.
But I doubt Gibbs will come back again. This is just stuff that people say SHOULD happen. Gibbs knows better though.

I like this for one reason and one reason alone...SNYDER LISTENS TO HIM
and that is all that matters, you could have a genetically engineered perfect GM bot that never makes mistakes on Personell coaches or managers, that reguarly picks up 100 game players in late rounds of the draft and has a consistent record of building SB winners (would you call it a Bellibot or a Robocheck) and it would be useless to the Skins as Snyder would not listen to it, however he would listen to gibbs and as long as Snyder is listening to someone other than himself on Football decisions I am happy

The story is that
He isnt going to be Coaching. He is “supposed” to come here to be the buffer from Danny boy to the coaches.

exactly....
People are calling this Gibbs III when this is a totally different situationall together. This is aGibbs as an official high level advisor. He is selecting a GM, Coach, and advising for personnell….not a long term GM or coaching spot. I don’t care what anyone says….but anytime you have a HOF coach on the staff in any capacity….it’s a good thing!

I think
this is a false rumor as well. It is meant to prey on the exasperation of us as Redskins fans and, unfortunately it is working because this dickheads name is flying all over the place. Seriously, why don’t they just make a National Enquirer – Sports Edition so that some of these lazy, dishonest, no talent journalists can all get together in one place. Then hopefully there’ll be a gas leak in the building.
Now, that said, here’s what I think of the Gibbs hypo. If he came in in a “Parcells role”, I’d be all for it. While Snyder is obviously the CEO of the Skins, this would basically make Gibbs the COO. In other words, Gibbs would be the Prime Minister, and Snyder would be Queen Elizabeth. I could live with that. Then maybe Gibbs would hire a good GM, who would assist him in hiring a good coach (RUSS!! – RUSS!! – RUSS!!). Then, when the two had a disagreement, it would be Gibbs and not Dan who breaks the tie.
