Redskins Sign OT Levi Jones and RB Quinton Gaither
Release RBs Anthony Alridge (again) and local boy Marcus Mason (sorry CJHutch), and P Glenn Pakulak.
Levi Jones had worked out with the Lions and Packers this past month. Don't get excited Redskins fans, Levi Jones has gotten porous reviews the last few weeks. We'll certainly take what we can get though.

I don't know
about signing someone that a lot of teams say doesn’t have it anymore, especially if it means getting rid of some of the young talent we have (talking more about Mason than Alridge). anybody hear anything about this Gaither dude?

Per Wikipedia.....
“Quinton Ganther (born July 15, 1984 in Oakland, California) is an American football running back for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played college football at Utah.
At Utah, Ganther ran 1120 yards in his senior year with a 5.5 yard per carry average. He added 314 yards in the air, and had 8 total touchdowns.”
if you’re gonna drink the kool aid, it needs to be red (not cherry, or strawberry – RED!)

never heard of burgundy kool aid, but whatever floats your boat

Levi Jones
What does it say when a team, Green Bay, who is hurting at the Offensive line position almost as bad as Washington turns down a player—Or a team, Lions, who has signed a lineman released by the Redskins but won’t sign this player.
Levi Jones:
In my opinon this is a signing to quiet the fans…while at the same time stick it to the fans by releasing two fan favorites without giving them an opportunity to showcase their skill, Daniel Snyder building Apathy with the fan base…. yeah…
Hold on a second...
I know he is above every facet but how come when something like this happens that the finger is immediately pointed at Snyder? How do you know that he even had a hand in it. It seems like on Sunday Snyder said “Hey Vinny fix this shit” and then hopefully said “or your ass is grass”.
I seriously doubt Snyder woke up this morning and said I’m gonna sign a lineman and drop two running backs. This could be Vinny just grasping straws.
vinny don't do nothin
without dan’s approval.

it's going to quiet the fans for one week
until we put up less than 10 points and we do it all over again!
The Offensive Line is Snyder's Fault
no
it will quiet the fans the don’t follow the game as much as others. levi jones has been released by too many other teams to have me feel anymore confident in this O-Line then I did last week.
SpotieOtieDopalicious
well...
The Skins literally had ZERO tackles left if one went down…they had to sign someone.

Why the F’ do we keep resigning Renaldo Wynn to the team every week? I’d rather have Marcus Mason than Wynn. Like what the hell does Renaldo and Pakulak do all week, are they even allowed to hang out at Redskin Park?
We need Wynn
He can play all the positions on the DL, he knows our system, he’s one of the few DE’s that can play the run block, and w/ Phillip Daniels on life support, Wynn will probably see time.

Wynn + Daniels = Defensive version of Heyer and Thomas
by BayAreaBullet on Oct 20, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I wouldn't say
That we “need” Wynn. I think it’s a stretch to say that. I’m not sure we can even make a strong case for Wynn “belonging” on the team. He’s yet to even be active in any of the games. If Daniels goes down for the season I guess Wynn could be a valuable backup, but other than that I don’t see why he’s on the team.
if you haven't prepared yourself yet for that very likely scenario
I’m sorry for you
SpotieOtieDopalicious
its like the feeling after a loved one dies
the gravity of the situation doesn’t hit you for a while.
stop it Doc
stuff that makes sense doesn’t happen for this franchise.
SpotieOtieDopalicious
it doesn't
Levi was signed today because he has been available for 3 months, instead of waiting to hear what the prognosis is on Samuels-This is typicaly Franchise crap
Vinny is like a little kid
that just got his allowance for the week. He doesn’t think to save it to get the big lego set down the road, instead he buys the cheap knock-off legos that won’t even be compatible with his Christmas present later. A bit of a stretch, I know, but the point is the same.
They won't be resigned
Mason burned some bridges on his way out of town and we signed Ganther cause he is a combination of the two of them. Why bother anyway, we don’t need ANOTHER running back.
Still don't see what everyone else does with Mason
Sorry CJ.
by BayAreaBullet on Oct 20, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions
He was the local kid made good
Which is why he got a spot on the team to begin with. It was just another poor personnel decision based more on keeping an (uninformed) fanbase happy.
what do you mean he burned some bridges?
SpotieOtieDopalicious
you should join me
in denial. It’s a lovely place where bad things, like a career ending injury to Samuels, never happen. He’ll be back next week, right? :P
Who?
Who in the hell is Quinton Gaither and is he really any better than Mason or Alridge? OK, it’s settled, we picked up Levi Jones so now we don’t have to “waste” any draft picks on O-linemen in next year’s draft. I don’t know what we’d do if we weren’t so lucky to have a guy like Cerrato ruining running this franchise.
Should have happened earlier
I don’t think he’s that great but he’s probably better than Heyer or Williams(after a week or 2 to get prepared). Also with us needing three new tackles next year it doesn’t hurt to bring guys in and maybe one guy shows a little something and can be a backup next year since it will be tough to get 3-4 O linemen, 2 D-linemen, OLB, RB, and CB through any draft, especially one missing a 3rd(still love the Jarmon pick) and a 6th(still loathe the Jason Taylor trade). If we had been bringing guys in like this and seeing if something sticks since Week 1 we might have weathered the Samuels injury a little better. Still I think we were just a team with too many holes to fill and no particular signing or draft pick last year would have salvaged this season.
SUPER BOWL
Vinny Cerrato is the freaking man!

Our O-line has been neglected for to bloody long & as usual our backups or should that be lack of backups are useless most times & not to mention the injures, Maybe if the skins got a few OL in the draft or through the start of FA, we could have a pretty decent offence that knows the system & not ones we pick up midway though season that dont know the system or calls, I just HOPE Jones can fit in & help on offence (got to hope) & as for Quinton Gaither who is we ???
Redskins for Real or not
If the Redskins are interested in helping the line
Just released by Seattle, Kyle Williams
A good backup, but better and younger than Jones and could be better than both starting tackles on the Redskins.
If you really want to upgrade Front office, pickup this guy!
Or, wait til someone else signs him then trade a draft pick for him
by Kevin Ewoldt on Oct 20, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Or wait till he's been out of football
for 5 years and his best years are behind him. Then try to rehab him back into shape and keep reminding everyone that he was first round pick 12 years ago.
Heard on the radio on the way home
Mason gave some comments to The Fan on his way out the door that were not the most complimentary.
Paraphrasing here, he said:
Maybe now without me on the team they can beat some teams with winning records instead of giving teams their first win.
They said he specifically told them to quote him, but it sounds to me to be a bit of an emotional outburst and not a well-thought-out statement. I’m sure if he thought about it he could have been more scathing.
Maybe Mason should have realized that for a 3rd year player
who is a marginal NFL player at best should be able to play Special Teams or learn how to block. People have probably been telling him that since his senior year in college but he looks as bad as any rookie ever in Pass Protection and Special Teams after three freaking seasons!!!! Dude is either just not an NFL caliber athlete or a lazy a$$hole who thought he was so good he didn’t have to do what it takes for undrafted guys to make it in the NFL.
by BayAreaBullet on Oct 20, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions
and yet, Heyer has a job??
SpotieOtieDopalicious
Heyer atleast improved over the last couple years
not enough to be any good but he did get better. Your right though that Heyer is another example of a marginal NFL player at best. It just bugged me that Mason looked like a rookie when it comes to the areas of the game he has to excel in to make an NFL roster. He has been on practice squads so he had time to work on Special Teams and blocking and I doubt that there was a single knowledgeable football guy who didn’t pound it into his head that he can only make a team if he blocks or shows an ability to play ST. Probably being too hard on him but that really irked me about him.
by BayAreaBullet on Oct 20, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe not much longer
Do you think we move Heyer back to right and start Jones at left if he can get up to speed? Or do we keep Fatty Williams at right? Heyer played awful at LT (his supposed natural position) and if he had more than marginal talent at RT our run game maybe wouldn’t have been so one-dimensional.
Though, surprisingly the pass pro wasn’t that bad against the Chiefs and maybe it would be better to keep the same line in tact for two games in a row.
was anyone watching Big Mike closely?
I saw him hold up 1-1 a couple times but to be honest I spent a large part of the game either throwing back whiskey shots or with my head in my hands.

i actually didn't see him.

Do you have Cataracts?
The dude is bigger than Haynesworth.

i work at a retail store on the weekends
so I wasn’t able to see as much of the game as someone sitting on the couch would smartass. so no, I didn’t get to see how he held up in protections
SpotieOtieDopalicious
I was making a fat joke not criticizing you
Also since I live West Coast I have to rock a bar stool.

sorry 'bout that
this team has me edgy
SpotieOtieDopalicious
at this point
I’m thinking they’re going to throw jones into the fire and start him just to put heyer back at right. i guess it couldn’t get any worse.
SpotieOtieDopalicious
Quinton Ganther
Here are his preseason highlights.
On the radio I heard him described as a “less talented Maurice Jones-Drew.” He seems taller, but you gotta like the way he broke that long one.
That's IT
I’m DONE with this team. What, Portis rips off one long run so you think he’s found the fountain of youth? Why cut Mason to sign someone just like him, when you haven’t even given him a legit shot? This FO is such a joke.
Truthfully, I’m not surprised. I half expected Mason to be cut at some point after we picked up Alridge. I just figured we’d actually USE Alridge. I’m happy about Jones. He may be washed up, but he’s better than Heyer. Personally, I think they should have picked up Mark Tauscher instead of Alridge a few weeks ago. Of course, I’m not use to the FO doing things that I like anyway
GO ARGONAUTS!!!.
Not a Mason fan
but I gotta admit I felt kinda bad when I read it just for you CJ.

I don't believe you
I’ve had the same feelings in moments of madness caused by the stupidity of Vinny but you’ll be back just like I am.
No, I'm
not going anywhere. But, Mason fan or not, you have to wonder what the hell they’re doing. Is this guy Ganther a proven commodity? No. SO what makes him a better option than a guy who’s been in your system for the past few years? The answer? It really doesn’t matter. They’re probably not gonna use him anyway. Either way though, this is just another example of how so goddammed stupid the hierarchy of this organization is. They always think the grass is greener on the other side. Rather than developing their own talent, they would rather look elsewhere for it. Which, in REALITY, just proves that they have as little faith in their own scouting abilities as the rest of us do.
