2010 Coach
I know that we've heard the normal coaching names popping up the last couple of weeks, with Jon Gruden being the front runner apparently. (Guess who's in town for dinner this weekend?) But who does everybody think is the best fit? I think there will be some other good coaches available besides the old farts club (Shanahan, Holmgren).
Holmgren: Old and I'm tired of the WCO. And he did produce Jim Zorn! I don't want a coach that is also GM.
Shanahan: Kind of think he rode Elways coat tails and I've seen enough zone blocking lately. GM duties once again,
Gruden: Could bring some fire to the squad, but could also be a yes man.
Cowher: Pretty sure he's going to Carolina if he goes any where.
What about Jeff Fisher or John Fox? I actually like the two of them better than anyone else and I think both are on their way out.

We need someone like..
Mike Singletary!!! Now saying he is a great coach…..yet…..but it would be nice to have someone that takes no shit. I would love to here Zorn calling out some of these players publicly. This is the f*&%ing NFC East! We need a smash mouth, hard nosed bad ass coach. FYI-I voted for Cowher…..even though no way in hell it happens!

I’ve heard a lot people dogging Singletary lately, saying the hard ass approach only works so long before the team gets tired of it. Singletary is an awful X’s and O’s coach though.
But I’m with you we need someone with some fire.

Pretty sure
that Gruden is in town because he is the announcer for MNF. If anyone is the front runner, its Shanahan, seeing as they have already offered him the job.
I voted for Zorn. I think he’s quirky.

I’m pretty aware that Gruden is in town for MNF, I’m just saying I wouldn’t be surprised if Dan Snyder “bumps” into him.

Ha, Ok, just making sure you hadn't lost it.
It will be funny listening to Gruden though, It’ll be like a job interview.

Fisher
because I think he’s strong enough to stand up to Snyder and smart enough to do it effectively. Fox would be my next choice.
I don’t think Cowher will want the job, remember he worked for Marty Schottenheimer so he probably knows how Snyder treats his coaches. That’s a real long shot IMO. I also don’t want Holmgren (I don’t like the WCO) or Shanahan because I don’t want a GM / HC. Those duties need to be separated.
Gruden is iffy to me because the Bucs fans said that he just milked Dungy’s team and his motivational style wasn’t effective.
I guess my next choice, since the others are all absurd, is myself and I will draft OL!!!!
Plus I’ll work cheap (compared to other HCs).

I’m kind of tired of the Gruden taking Dungy’s team thing. Didn’t the Raiders (the team Gruden built) got to the Super Bowl with Bill Callahan?
by pas493 on Oct 20, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
look at the rosters
Gruden did use Dungy’s team. I don’t know about the Raiders because I’ve never liked them, in fact I’ve always disliked them.

I don’t know about the Raiders because I’ve never liked them, in fact I’ve always disliked them.
First of all that sentence doesn’t make sense. Second of all, when Gruden won the Super Bowl who did they play (I assume you watch Super Bowls)? The Raiders!!! coached by Bill Callahan, who I think we can all agree is not a top tier coach by any means. Gruden coached the Raiders from 99 to 01, so who’s team did Callahan take to that same Super Bowl? You guessed it Jon Gruden!
Dungy Defensive guy, Gruden offensive guy. Add in Monte Kiffin and Gruden improving the offense and that what set them over the top.
Rice, Gannon, Garner, Wheatley, Brown, Porter, Ritchie… All Gruden’s guys in Oakland

since you replied with an attitude
The sentence does make sense but evidently you need help. “I don’t know about the Raiders because I’ve never liked them, in fact I’ve always disliked them.”
It’s real simple but I’ll break it up into smaller pieces for you. I don’t like the Raiders. Because I don’t like the Raiders I don’t keep up with their roster changes from year to year. In the NFL, it’s not just the well known names that matter so following the details of how a roster changes is important to really know what’s going on.
After checking, the Raiders rosters were very different. There were 12 (out of 22) new starters:
Mo Collins (LG), Barret Robbins©, Frank Middleton (RG), DeLawrence Grant (LDE), Sam Adams (LDT), John Parrella (RDT), Bill Romanowski(LLB), Napoleon Harris (MLB), Eric Barton (RLB), Tory James (RCB), Derrick Gibson (SS), Rod Woodson (FS).
I didn’t know that before looking it up which is why I didn’t claim to have any facts. having facts is very handy….you should try it.

Barrett Robbins was on the Raiders since ‘95 and he didn’t play in the SB regardless. I said to look at their sides of the ball. The Raiders defense in 2002 has nothing to do with Gruden, just like Tampa Bays offense in 2002 had nothing to do with Dungy.
I was saying your sentence did make sense b/c you said “I’ve never liked them” and then followed that up with “in fact I’ve always disliked them”, wasn’t that idea expressed with “I’ve never liked them”

well apologies then
I don’t like being rude and now that you explain it I can see where that could be confusing. So here’s what I was trying to say: me there’s a difference between not liking a team and actually disliking a team. To me there’s a whole scale. Most teams I really don’t care about 1 way or the other. That’s what I meant when I said I’d “never liked them”. The same would be said of most teams. Then there are other degrees of like/dislike.
I Love the Redskins, I like the Chiefs, I don’t really care about any team not listed here, I dislike the Broncos and the Raiders (both are Chiefs rivals) , I hate the Cowboys and the Eagles. For the Giants it varies by year, even though they are rivals I’d rather see them win the division than the Cowboys or Eagles so if we’re doing well they’re the enemy but if we suck (which we’ve done a lot of over the last 15 years) then I hope for them to beat out the Cowboys and Eagles.
So it is true to say I never liked the Raiders and that I go even further to disliking them. If the scale were
1 hate
2 dislike
3 don’t care
4 like
5 love
then the Raiders are a 2 so it’s true to say 4 <= 4 and 2 <= 4.
If that’s ugly it’s because I write computer code for a living. :P
The huge turnover of starting players (over half 0of their defense) does mean it isn’t the same team. As a HC you’re in charge of both, even if you are a defensive or offensive guy. And many of those guys were impact players: Adams, parrells, Romanowski, Harris, Woodson.

Well look at the Bucs starting offense in 2002, 7 New starters out of 11
by pas493 on Oct 20, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
so we're wrong about both
which is funny. Some of those new Bucs players were good too. That’s the way reputations sometimes go though – more myth than fact. Like the myth that Gibbs didn’t understand the current NFL and that why he didn’t do as well when he returned to the Redskins (as he did the first time around). I think he did very well and that the roster just wasn’t that great. Brunell was no super star at that point in his career although he had some good players on offense around him like the OL. Back then it was still fairly decent. But the defense wasn’t very good then. But what will fans of other teams remember?

Not saying he's the best choice
But Chris Mortenson tweeted last night that Sherm Lewis was recommended to the Skins by Marriucci.
I asked Morte if he thought that made Mooch the frontrunner for head coach but he didn’t respond.
by ReggieBullits on Oct 20, 2009 10:36 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No F’ing way! Atleast thats what I hope. Sometimes I think Mortenson just makes up shit. I thought Holmgren suggested Lewis?

Agreed
Personally can’t stand Marriucci. Surely the hair salons in the DMV would be behind this move 110%.

Why wasn't Grimm on the list...
he’s Burgundy and Gold through and through and not one of the old farts listed. As I’ve said, I’d love Cowher, and we simply can’t afford to take a chance on the rest of the lot except Fischer, but I don’t see him on the outs. Just needs to rebuild. OH – and no WCO, so that outs Holmgren and to a lesser extent Gruden and Shanny.
Let’s go with tough, youth or middle age. Not old farts like Holmgren and Shanny.

My bad
But when have you ever heard Grimm connected with coaching the Skins? I know it would be nostalgalistic, but do you really want another unproven head coach? We need a proven head coach! When’s the last time you’ve seen an offensive line coach take over a team and become an effective coach? Tom Cable? The dude has never even been a coordinator! Sound familar?
by pas493 on Oct 20, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But
there aren’t a lot of examples of ‘proven’ coaches getting it done on more than one team. If you look around the league, a lot of the success stories are young coaches that are running a team for the first time: McDaniels, Harbaugh, Tomlin, Whisenhunt, Sparano, Rex Ryan. Most of these guys were coordinators and were hired more for their approaches than for what they had proved (with a few exceptions).
Grimm has been mentioned as a candidate for a HC position the past couple years. He’s worse a look.
by Boo. on Oct 20, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thats what we tried with Zorn. Do you really want to embark out on another experiment? How are Spags, Schwartz, and Cable doing taking over BAD teams (you know kind of like a team in DC that is on pace to finish 5-11)?
Both Gruden and Holmgren did pretty damn well with two different teams.
by pas493 on Oct 20, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah...
I understand the “unproven” part, but he would bring in a system better suited to the players we’ve got IMO and I think he would push off Snyder. I dunno…Gruden scares me, Shanny is not exciting, and Holmgren is totally WCO. Fox has possibilities and Fischer would be awesome, just don’t think he’s leaving TN.

What is “his” system that would work for us? He’s never been a OC, I have no idea what the hell “his” system is.

Take a look
Russ Grimm
Assistant Head Coach/Run game coordinator/Offensive Line; born May 2, 1959, Scottsdale, Pa. Center Pittsburgh 1977-1980. Pro guard Washington Redskins 1981-1991, Pro coach: Washington Redskins 1992-2000, Pittsburgh Steelers 2001-06, joined Cardinals in 2007.
I’m saying he’s an NFL East type coach. Wisenhunt didn’t bring him over from the Steelers by accident. He went to the SB as a player, and a coach on two teams. I think he’s a good character guy kind of fit which is what this team needs as much as anything.

I know who Russ Grimm is, I’m just saying I don’t know what his system is? He didn’t become the “run coordinator” (whatever the hell that means) until this year and the Cardinals have the SECOND WORST RUNNING GAME IN THE NFL. So why the hell would I sign up for that?
by pas493 on Oct 20, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good points all
around, but I guess it just shows how desperate things have gotten. Unless the team just fools the crap out of me and doesn’t tank the remainder of the season.

Yes, and OK...
a slightly different point than I was trying to make earlier, but I’d still vote Grimm in if he has a good GM and little interference (HA!) from Snyder.

me too
I don’t think Grimm is the cause of the running game problem in AZ, they haven’t had a good running game in years. I think they brought him in to help with it but just like JC playing in a WCO system, they might not have the personnel for it yet.
by aFan4Life on Oct 20, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not a fan of Shanny or Holmgren
Cowher will never happen, Fox and Fisher would not be bad.
Gruden would work ok, but not great either.
Thus is the problem, while a change in coaching can transform a team from 4-12 to 8-8 it will not transform the team to a playoff contender.
by dr WNC on Oct 20, 2009 11:11 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'd have to say
That Fisher would be on the top of my list, followed by John Fox. Comcast Sports Net said yesterday that Gruden felt he was largely unsuccessful in Tampa Bay because they lacked a franchise QB, so that’s why the Redskins wouldn’t be attractive to Gruden, so we may have to take him off the list.
However, we’re going to keep going through the same mess of being a 9 win team at best if we don’t get a real GM. I really truly hope Snyder realizes that Cerrato is crappy and is hurting the team way more than he’s helping it. A real GM might be able to convince Snyder to butt out of the decisions, and then we’ll be a playoff contender in a few years with sound decisions and drafting.

Give him the big bad boot
Redskins wouldn’t be attractive to Gruden, so we may have to take him off the list.
I don’t like what the players had to say about Gruden. We’d go from a weiner-dog to Chucky, and there would just be too much turmoil. I still think Fischer or Grimm are the best candidates and I doubt that Fischer is available.

If your talking about gruden
He was good at getting the best out of everybody but he was a horrible talent evaluator. He did do the best he could with what he had though. The bucs sucked last year and im pretty amazed that they won that much.
