This is a really low point for me and all Skins fans. I have been feeling the frustration we all feel and looking for somewhere to vent my anger. I have been unsure of what to do or how to try and effect change however. I've been thinking about it alot and was hoping to bounce it off you guys. Take the jump to see my take.
First off I am as mad as all of you. I'm 27 and am honestly unsure if I will ever see a Super Bowl again in my lifetime. I grew up with the naive idea that the Skins will always win a Super Bowl or 2 per decade and be a competitive franchise. Obviously Adulthood and Dan Snyder have robbed me of that naive world view. I HATE Dan Snyder. He is just an incredibly loathsome man. Even away from football he is a horrible human being. Don't even get me started on Cerrato. That man is a shitty little weasel. The typical guy who never admits a mistake and tries to hide his incompetence with a scorched earth rebuttal to any criticism. Spagnuolo turns down an offer to coach here? Well of course we are gonna leak shit to the media saying he wasn't offered the job. There is probably much better stuff to get upset about but Cerrato's reaction to Sally Jenkins really turned my stomach. She legitimately criticized him and he just went all out character-assassination on her. Didn't he say he was gonna fax her a copy of his SuperBowl rings? He's like an assistant scouting director for SF back in their glory days and an abysmal failure ever since and he wants to rub those rings in her face? He could not be any more clueless or tone deaf. I have been having hilarious day dreams of a crack squad of Special Op's guys kidnapping Snyder away in the middle of the night and marooning him on a deserted island like Tom Hanks in Castaway. Cerrato could be his Wilson(a major downgrade from a volleyball IMO).
That being said how do we get at Snyder without tarnishing the franchise at the same time. I am 100% against people selling all their tix or boycotting games. Not just because it's shameful but also because it's an impotent petulant gesture. I can't blame anyone who lets their tix go because they can't afford it. In this economy there is no shame in saving the money. If, however, you think someone selling their tix back or boycotting games is gonna change anything they are fooling themselves. Even if a huge movement came together and got a significant number of people to not renew their tix Snyder would still sell out. There will be ticket brokers and real fans ready to buy more tix. Even if they failed the very nature of DC ensures that business, lobbyists, etc. would still buy seats. I can't really envision any scenario where Snyder is unable to sell out or affected in any way by a boycott. The only result is a stadium full of non-fans. Any NFL player will tell you they play better with the crowd rooting them on. If we turn into a stadium of non-fans it won't hurt Snyder's bottom line it would just hurt the product on the field. It would be a classic cutting off your nose to spite your face move.
As for Paper Bags. I mean really? I hope they won't have any when I fly back for the Denver game cuz I will surely be drunk and tempted to pull out a lighter. Bag-heads = losers. Flaming Bag-heads = Hilarious. On a more serious note, stuff could get much worse here. We could go from a mediocre product every season to the Lions/Browns, etc. When a fan base completely turns apathetic it makes the team even tougher to turn around. Also I feel like we as Fans play a part in the success of the Franchise. When we support the team it is more likely to do better. Granted the FO hasn't been doing their part but I'm not gonna stop doing my part just because of them. I think we need to find a way to get at Snyder without impugning the Franchise(which presumably everyone on HH cares about) itself.
Snyder owns the team outright. He is also a stubborn little shit who will keep on turning a profit and ignoring the fans. I don't think there is any effective way to hurt his profits by attacking the Skins. I think we need to get at his other business ventures where other people most likely have more say. For instance it sucks Valkyrie isn't coming out now. He was a producer on that film. How awesome would it be if Skins fans boycotted that movie. You could get some fans together to picket outside Movie Theaters and let Steinberg know so he could come down and cover it. It's a quirky enough story that it would make local news and maybe even be picked up nationally. If businesses viewed partnership with Snyder as a negative he would become a economic pariah and THAT would bother him. I'm not sure what his deal with Johnny Rockets or Six Flags is but they are publicly traded companies so he would have to be accountable to shareholders in some fashion. We need to think outside the box a little bit. There is no one who can make him do anything in terms of the Redskins but his other business ventures can put pressure on him. My only qualms are that innocent people at his other ventures might be harmed economically. But any boycott of the skins or elsewhere will cause problems for innocent employees. If profit margins shrink Snyder would just fire more innocent Skins employees and not lose any money himself. People should remember that when they advocate boycotts and stuff. Snyder won't be harmed just the little guys. So lets find a way for people to put pressure on him. Lets be creative. Lets do humorous stuff that doesn't drag the Franchise though the mud. Lets do stuff that would have Steinberg covering it and national writers linking to it. Paper Bags and inneffectual boycotts of the Skins is stupid and uninspired we can be more creative and effective.
As for buying official Skins gear or buying beer inside I don't think people should be doing much of that whether we are a Super Bowl team or the dregs of the league. Anytime you are forced to buy venue/food drinks you are getting screwed. Period. If your a drinker, tailgate hard and bring a flask. Make sure you eat your fill before you go in. All this stuff is common sense. Of course for parents with Kids thats tougher but I think no matter what anytime your forced to buy food/drinks from some place and they have a captive market your gonna get screwed whether it be a Skins game, a concert, Amusement park, etc. The official NFL gear is always a rip off. Make your own T-shirts. Go to Thrift Shops and Ebay for your gear. The older stuff is better anyways. Want a Jersey? I got my throwbacks from some dude from Korea on Ebay. You can't tell them apart and I only payed $30/per. I guess what I'm saying is we should always be avoiding Stadium vending and official gear no matter the state of the Team.
The FO might not be doing their part but I will continue to cheer loudly every game I am lucky enough to attend and will continue to do my small part to contribute to success. If anyone can suggest a creative idea that doesn't drag the Skins down with Snyder I am ready to help out.
