Personnel Ideas for this year to make us better for next year...
So I'm pretty sure our man Jim Zorn needs to win the next two games or he's gone after the Eagles game. This way we would get a head start on the 'gals for landing one of the big name former SB champs coaches.
Depending on who comes in, you will probably see Portis, ARE, insert other veterans here by February. Maybe we can load up on picks after the season but I seriously doubt it.
But looking ahead I see a lot of areas for primary concern:
O-Line (Duh!)
MLB- Fletcher can't play much longer and is HB Blades a possible answer?
QB- Depending who comes in to coach
RB- Can Mason be a long term answer
OLB- Orakpo needs to be moved to DE, bad!
But we can't address all these via the draft.
So what to do this year?
I'm kind of kicking around the idea of trading for Derrick Johnson from the Chiefs, he's a pretty good LB that they are trying to get rid of. This would allow Orakpo to move to DE (Daniels you're, sit your ass down please!) and also would be a guy that could be a better alternative to take Fletcher's place in the future, for a few years.
I don't think bringing in Runyan and Kendall is a good idea at all. Most everyone here thinks that we are in for a long year and love to tell you about it. But how would bringing in Runyan and Kendall improve a team that you think is going nowhere? All it is going to do is stunt the growth of some young lineman. Rinehart and Heyer need to play the rest of the season as an open audition for next year, maybe even Williams and Montgomery. I think we should obviously still sign a lineman for depth purposes.
And can anyone answer this for me? I know we have Andre Woodson, but why the hell do we not have a 3rd QB dressed out on Sundays? It doesn't take up a roster spot on the active list! Its not so far fetched that if JC went down (he does get hit A LOT), that old man river wouldn't get hurt also, then what? I have to watch ARE run around all game?

BPA
After picking up a couple (or a few) good OL prospects they should just get the best player available as we’re hurting in enough areas that it’s very doubtful that any position couldn’t be helpful. Plus I think every player should have competition, real competition. And then they need to start the best player, not the most expensive player.

You’re completely right, I don’t think our FO knows what BPA means. Look how many teams have grabbed solid back up running backs to past couple of years and have a two headed attack and we just rely on Portis.
Rice-McGahee-McClain
Johnson-Charles
Westbrook-McCoy
Tomlinson-Sproles
Jacobs-Bradshaw
Barber-Jones-Choice
Peterson-Taylor
Williams-Stewart
Johnson-White
Addai-Brown
Taylor-Morris-Maroney
Jones-Washington
Lynch-Jackson
Parker-Mendenhall
We are like the only team left in the league that relies on one feature back, its rediculous

It's going to be rough...
no matter what they do. I do think if they lose a couple more…..they need to pack it in and start evaluating for next year. That would include moving Orakpo to DE….getting Jarmon more time….and forcing these young receivers into the game. I actually like the Derrick Johnson idea pas!
As far as the draft goes…..5 picks isn’t going to fix this team (1,2,3 (Jarmon),4,5,6(Jason Taylor fiasco), and 7). We need to find a way to get value for a couple players and pick up some more picks. I know we wouldn’t get much…..but cut out ARE and Betts…..that’s 2 big salaries for not much production. I don’t know what the cap concequences would be. I would like to see us get value for Portis, not that I don’t think he is valuable, but just to get the personality out of the locker room or pick up a change of pace guy we can count on to go with him (don’t think Mason is the long term solution). Betts is a good receiver out of the backfield but leaves a lot to be desired rushing anymore. There is just so much…..the obvious offensive line needs are overwhelming. We need depth at LB! Of course…..we will prolly need a QB!
It will definitely be interesting to see how they go about trying to build this team again!

I’d love to get rid of ARE but he’s basically holding us hostage with his salary cap figure. Actually I take that back, I like ARE A LOT in the slot. I would love to see them put Thomas and Kelley outside for a whole game and strictly play ARE at the slot.

Picks are solid, unless a turnaround happens in 1 year...See Daniel Snyder FF team owner...
And Jarmon is a pick, so it is 6 picks out of 7 available.

The nice things about playing our young players
1) change of pace and intensity, maybe even make playing and watching football fun!
2) even if they lose, just means higher round draft picks, which should be traded down for multiple picks so we can pick up linemen and fill other holes as best we can.
3) BPA a QB that won’t break the bank with pick from #2 above
4) trade Portis to NE as they have a TON of draft picks and BPA for a solid running back with Mason as backup (play Mason this year to find out if he can make it).
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

Watching MNF and other games makes me realize how F’ing boring the Skins are to watch. Has anyone noticed that like all of our games are over at 3:45 every week and the rest of the NFL still has a quarter left?
Just curious, but why would New England want Portis? They already have Sammy Morris, Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk, Laurence Maroney, and BenJarvis Green-Ellis

well in regards to personnel
I think we’re actually OK at WR, TE and S and on the DL. At WR, I would trade Santana for what I could get, same with Devin Thomas. Install Kelly at the #1, Mitchell as the #2 and ARE at the #3. If you need a 4 wide setup, split out Cooley and let Davis earn his paycheck. Collins would be my interim QB until we determine if the guys on the roster (Brennan or Woodson) can cut it.
The RB and QB problems are tied somewhat to the OL issues. In some cases Jason simply refuses to thtrow the ball downfield, In others, it’s hard for Portis to hit holes that are not there. I would look at moving Chris over to RT, leave Heyer as a backup and see about getting a good LT in round 1. We have some guys in at guard, but another youngster wouldn’t hurt, nor would a Center. If we get anything back for Thomas or Santana, I would use that pick here.
LB is a huge issue, Orakpo should be moved to the DL to rotate with Carter and Jarmon. The inside looks okay with Griff, Haynesworth, and Monty and Golston, I would have Alexander around for depth. That looks solid imho. See ya Renaldo, ty for your years of service. Also at LB, Fletcher isn’t getting any younger and while Blades has done okay, he’s not anything other than serviceable. McIntosh is injury prone, his knees will always be a concern. In the 2nd round we get the best LB available.
with the DL already being addressed by Jarmon, the 4th and 5th round picks should most likely be spent on either a LB or a OL for depth purposes. I think what we have at QB, RB should allow us to get by for another year. Would I like to upgrade them, yes I would, but the other needs are more pressing.
With the 7th rounder, I want to get a decent kicker on the squad, or it could be used on a small but fast CB or WR.
This doesn’t take into account who we may let walk via trade or free agency, but you have to start somewhere and if I really had a preference, I would hope that we have a high draft pick that we can trade down from to allow someone else to play the QB crapshoot so that we have some extra picks to restock certain positions
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

Good Ideas
I don’t want to see Collins as our starting QB next year, when we get a new coach, I would expect him to retire. I think Snyder will become enthralled with a rookie QB though probably someone like Jake Locker.
Please do not waste one of our 5 picks on a kicker though. Gostkowski, Prater, Rackers, Reed, Nedney, Feely, and Janikowski are all Free Agents and their are some decent guys kick in the UFL like Matt Bryant, no joke. But Suisham hasn’t missed this year and he’s making it hard for us to get rid of him, I thought he’d be gone by now.

seen Locker play
was not impressed, maybe he’ll improve with some more snaps. Looks like he needs another year at the Div one level.

Whether
you like it (him) or not, Campbell will not be our QB next year. No way is Snyder going to resign him, which means we will be getting another unproven commodity at QB. Too bad Zorn will be gone, because we will need someone to mentor the new guy. The problem is, knowing Snyder, he will not settle for a non first rounder at QB. SO if we don’t end up with a top 10 pick (which we probably will) he will most likely trade up. Either way, that’s a longer wait for our TRUE need – offensive line. I am sort of stealing this idea, and expanding on it, from jamesumd – our best best may be to franchise (or transition) Carlos Rogers, and trade him for some draft picks. He will not net us a 1, but maybe some combination of mid and late round picks would suffice. Then we use 3 or 4 of them on O-line, then RB, LB, and maybe CB (though hopefully Barnes will improve by leaps and bounds by next year). Now this part is crucial. No matter WHAT we do, DO NOT draft a wide receiver, tight end, safety, or fullback.

or kicker!
I think we will be stuck with a high round QB which means a lot more money for someone to come in and get battered like Carr did in Houston.

Who the hell knows who is going to be on our O-line next year? If I had to guess, we would sign two FA lineman (BLAH) and then draft a QB in Round 1 and maybe a lineman in Round 2
All I know is if Randy Thomas is on the squad next year I’m gonna be pissed.

Randy Thomas is a 5.6M cap number for 2010
Portis is 12M

It is a lock that JC is gone
Danny wanting Cutler or Sanchez is a sign that he is unhappy with JC and I see nothing changing that right now. If Gruden is the coach, it is possible that we roll with TC b/c he loves the vet qbs for some reason. Sonny J kept saying during the game that TC would have this team at 4-0 if he was the starter…stating that JC is not finding the open man and can’t read a defense. Without a GM in place, we are most likely looking at take the next qb on the board in the first round, then OL in the second. Potentially TC starting for one year or so under Gruden and grooming the first rounder qb. With a GM, it should be BPA in the draft.
