Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Mundane Monday Morning

Did anyone else have a big problem with the officiating? I only watched it once but I thought for sure it was pass interference on Devin Thomas on the long bomb, can anyone snag  a clip of that and post it? It just seemed to me that the whole group of refs out there were indecisive and very confusing. I didn’t see it on TV but I heard from a friend who was there that the Westbrook punt fiasco was caused by a blatant block in the back against Westbrook, not sure if it was a reliable source because I’m sure he was hammered but did anyone else see the same thing?

Please...

let’s not go down the “poor officiating” road as an excuse as to why this team sucks.

The fact is, for every bad call, even if there isn’t a corresponding one that “evens it out,” you still get 50-60 offensive snaps to make good things happen; which this team rarely does.

I was a wrestler back in highschool

and our coach would never let us blame the ref for a loss, “it’s our job as competitors to not leave the decision in the hands of a ref… ie: beat the piss out of the other guy so badly that a bad call won’t cost you the match” i’m not saying we lost cause of the officiating i’m just saying that was the worst group of ref’s i’ve seen in a while. They didn’t explain calls well at all i saw flags comming out late like on that santana pass int call. The Ref’s need to make decisions on there own not when a player tells them they need to make a call. The punt was very poorly explained and it took forever for the first call to come in.

Officiating was fine

I’m still not sure how that punt wasn’t fair catch interference, it was never explained either. Its cool how the NFL doesn’t publish their rule book.

I don’t see how that play was caused by a block in the back. Westbrook was in front of 2 to 3 guys with his back to ARE.

by Parks Smith on Oct 12, 2009 9:26 AM EDT reply actions

It was explained

Redskins insider posted the refs explanation. A block in the back is illegal, but pushing is legal if the two players are engaged. Moral of the story: Westbrook should
not have been that close to ARE to begin with

Not the first time this game

It’s one thing if it was the first time, but it was everytime Westbrook was on top of ARE as he was trying to catch the ball.

COACHING

I guess it is Westbrook's fault

But, it still seems like a stupid rule. You’re allowed to push a defender into a returner after they’ve called a fair catch? Just doesn’t make sense to me. Why doesn’t this happen more often if it’s legal? 90% of the players probably don’t even know about the rule. Zorn might not know about it either come to think of it.

No one knows half the rules...

The NFL doesn’t publish their rule book anywhere and will never release it. As far as we know they could just be making shit up as it goes along.

Too many rules are open to the interpretation of the referee, its BS, it needs to be cut and dry and everyone should have access to the rules. Other sports you hear about refs being fined or called out all the time, but not the NFL.

How many times have you seen a a field goal go directly over the goal post? Is it good or not? How do the refs below the the posts interpret or decide? No idea

Another bullshit thing yesterday was the neutral zone infraction on Orakpo (I think). I do this all the time a basketball game yelling at the refs, but how the hell did the ref on total other side of the field call that and not the one on the near side of the field? Its like refs are never willing to overturn each other, I have no idea what the hell they talk about in their little conferences, look at the Detroit game and the non call on the Santana face mask.

by Parks Smith on Oct 12, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes...but

the same things happen to other teams. I don’t hear the Denver Broncos or their fans complaining -because:

"The guys in this locker room believe, the coaches believe, guys believe in each other and are fighting," defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday(notes) said.

just after they went 5-0 while beating NE with a rookie coach.

Redskins believe….not so much.

I was referring to...

the general notion that we are complaining about the refs for our own problems, which good teams do not do. Interesting point about the NFL Rulebook, but really has nothing to do with the fact that we suck. Why play at a level that forces the refs to have to make a decision in the first place.

At least...

with good teams “bad calls” get lost in the noise of success.

I wasn’t citing it as the reason we lost, I was merely bringing up a general point around the league.

with good teams "bad calls" get lost in the noise of success.

No shit, if you win everyone forgets about shitty calls, but good teams bring it up too. Ask the Seahawks about Super Bowl XL or ask a Cards fan if Holmes had both feet in last year.

by Parks Smith on Oct 12, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Well....

I would say bad calls in the SB are the worst case…as they do put in their “best” officiating crews and there are 50 more camera angles to help with sideline/end zone crossing and complete or incomplete pass types of calls.

But those are calls related to the finer points of play (did the receiver have both feet in and control, for example). Westbrook was essentially out of position and should not have been in any position to affect the outcome of the game.

I will say, that poor officiating does happen and it really sucks when things don’t go your way.

And, as much as I hate to admit it, the Holmes call in last year’s SB was absolutely, photographically proven correct. Rest is sour grapes.

Danny Smith

needs to be fired. nothing resembling a good return game in kickoffs or punts, just this fiasco against carolina.

by rgelfand on Oct 12, 2009 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

can't put that on danny smith

that’s all Randle Fell and Rock’s doing. He can make the guys block, but he damn sure can’t make rock any faster or make Fell go forward.

I'm to young to Die Danny...don't make me do it tomorrow....

danny smith

is more likely to be promoted then fired as of now

by skinsfan28 on Oct 12, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, but

he can and SHOULD tell Westbrook to stay the hell away from ARE. I still hate the non call, and I don’t know why we wouldn’t do it ourselves EVERY PUNT from here on out. But Westbrook should still be far away from the receiver.

I have been saying that...

Special Teams was the one bright spot for us this year. Sorry I mentioned it…

by Scott E on Oct 12, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

OK...here's the rule on the punt

Remember, El signaled for a fair catch. Therefore, all the skins should technically stop blocking at that point. If a return team player is engaged with an opponent rushing to tackle the returner, he can leagally be pushed into the returner. Think of it this way, if after a fair catch signal, the rusher cannot touch the returner, why should he be blocked? If he is blocked, he may then force the blocker into the returner.

All teams know this, and all teams practice this, including the Redskins.

Stupid mistakes and a lack of understanding…
