Lines.
[Note by TexSkins, 01/05/09 8:57 PM CST ] I'm promoting this because this is a good topic to get us started in the offseason. I'll have a follow up as soon as I find a few minutes away from work.
this draft i would not be dissapointed if we stocked up on lineman. now i know that may not be the smartest thing but watching our D-line fail to get any pressure AT ALL even with that "HOFer" that, in my opinion we wasted a second rounder on, our line was terrible. and it sent a shockwave through the defense. not pressure from the front four we had to send linebackers and because the oline could take our d-line one on one we had to send more linebackers or sit back and make the corners jobs harder. and if our backers go, quick dump off and no one is there to stop them. now our d was pretty darn good this year even without a pass rush imagine how good we could be with one. we could basically be the steelers except instead of being a sack machine we would be a pick/hurry/thrown away machine.
i was extremely dissapointed with the o-line at the end. the reason we were doing so well early is because our o-line would dominate and jason had a lot of time and clinton had huge tunnels to run through. but as the season wore on the o-line faded and our offense stalled, defense was put on the field more and under more pressure and the whole team collapsed. example was the steelers game. we could have demoralized within 5 minutes but the offense could not move the ball after two steeler TOs inside of the 50. they could have ended the game basically in the first quarter but they couldnt. and that was the story for the rest of the season. i think drafting a new left gaurd with a high pick(im assuming zorn will trade down) then a new left tackle maybe in the next couple years to replace samuels when he leaves and we can get a center in the later rounds this year and get some d linemen too this year then we can prepare for the future. just think in the next few yearsour line could be this
LT:Samuels LG:Rinehart C:New RG:Thomas(maybe)or New RT:Heyer
that would be a good line. tell me if you agree or if im just crazy

Defensive line
Agree the Defensive line needs upgraded but the “sacK” issue has less to do with the line and more to do with the linebackers in this defensive scheme. Basically, Greg B. continued a similar defense which Gregg W established.
To highlight the point Jacksonville went from 37 total team sacks in 2007 to 29 in 2008. The defense requires a strong linebacker group to achieve improved statistics in this catagory. A defense which runs the “plan” can then achieve an overall exceptional performance without the sacks with everyone performing their duties, Greg B. is slowly modifying this base defense which we began to see with the Eagles and 49ers game. Draft day should be about linebackers and offensive lineman, with a few “projects”

hmm.
the O-line, without question, needs upgrading. I think Samuels, Heyer and Rabach are safe. If we could grab a beastly left guard and keep Thomas I think we could have a good line. Maybe Reinhart is the answer… who knows.
I think our defensive line has a lot of problems, but Jason Taylor came on at the end and Andre Carter won’t have another bad year. He’s a good player. Hopefully he’ll get it together. Cornelius Griffin, too, was double-teamed at the end of the games last season, so my impression is that other teams respect his game still.
We def should take the opportunity to upgrade at DL with the first pick in the draft. I think in the middle rounds, we definitely need to upgrade at OLB. Rocky is worrying the coaches with his medical problems and HB Blades is pretty weak. If we could grab a DeMarcus Ware type, or a Joey Porter type, (obv that’s incredibly optimistic) that can rush the passer, then the pressure will be off the DL.

Oline Problems
I too was extremely disappointed in the Oline… however; this is what I am trying to figure out. We had a very very talented line individually. What I can’t figure out is why, last year, the comments about our line were the same. Samuels was down, Heyer was filling in with an average to above average rating. Wade and Fabini were average. But when Campbell went down and Collins took over, all of a sudden, there was protection and the line was moving with power and unity.
I honestly believe that there is a lack of unity in that huddle and wears on the Oline.

I agree of drafting o-linemen
Thats how I would like the draft to go. Use our top picks to get o-linemen. Our offense is good when they are ok but sputters about September when the injury bug sweeps the whole o-line. If we can grab one of the big 4 @ 13, then go for it. If not trade down to late first, and get either Duke Robinson, Eben Britton, Alex Mack or Max Unger.
If we land Jason Smith, he can compete/start RT with Jansen while Heyer backs up LT and use 3rd on AQ Shipley ©.
If we trade down, we could get Eben Britton to RT and get Herman Johnson (OG) or Jonathan Luigs © to backup Randy Thomas.

(And becuz we need OL like whoa)
