Jason Campbell is the issue

Hopefully, Zorn will not wait until Campbell gets injured to make a change. Campbell never seems the opportunities in any play aren't always the one called. He focuses so much on the "A" receiver, he forgets to read the defense and now that his "hot" receiver, Portis, will be WIDE OPEN IN THE FLAT. dump it off, Jason, dump it off. The hell with played called.

The game isn't executing, it's WINNING. Todd Collins proved it last year. Portis is always open. Jason never sees him nor Betts. It's downfield, waits too long, throws a bad pass, or is sacked.

Face it, Jason may never be an NFL quarterback. And, I hope, the Redskins don't hinge anymore future on one pick. The time to win is now!

quarterback

Zorn, you can’t fix it. Let it go. Move on past Jason very soon. He just doesn’t see, before the snap, that somebody is always open. That is the target. Collins showed that last year.

Before the ball is snapped is when the decision has to made, not after. Jason just doesn’t get it.

That's not fair

Collins knew the guy would be open because he’d had the same offensive coordinator since Reagan was President.

everyone

almost no one seems to know the offense anyways.

Im a Seahawk fan, who is rooting for Zorn, and I only got to see the end of the game.

I want to ask what you guys think of Zorn and if the passing game’s failure was Cambell’s or Zorn’s fault.

by xSAMx on Sep 4, 2008 10:46 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

both

some combination of both because it was obvious that campbell and probably the rest of the offense hasnt learned the offense yet. hard to tell whose fault that is

by joshp on Sep 4, 2008 11:04 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

whose fault is it ?

I think it’s Dan Snyders fault. He is a terrible owner ,these players don’t know who the coach or coordinaters are going to be from year to year. How can we know what this team can do when they have to learn a new playbook every year. The Skins have the weapons ,but if there is no consistency how can you expect them to play as a team?Lets get Dan to sell the team ,and start from there.

I think this thread is really unfair. Jason Campbell hasn’t even been given a chance. Look at all the great QBs… they’ve all been in the same system for years. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Brett Favre. Btw speaking of Favre, do you really think he’ll be great this year? I doubt it and the reason is because he’s not gonna be as comfortable as he was in Green Bay with a completely different system. People who suggest they start Todd Collins are ignorant. Collins had a great year last year and thats because he knew that system like the back of his hand after studying it for so many years. He was passing the ball before the receivers even got there. Do you honestly think he’d be so great in Zorn’s system? In the preseason he looked just as uncomfortable as Campbell did. Another thing to point out is that Campbell wasn’t really given a chance all game. Sure, he looked iffy during the first play when he got sacked and several times after that, but the play calling was so pitifully obvious that he never even got a fair chance. Run, run, pass! How can you expect him to succeed when the defense knows exactly what he’s going to do?!
You guys remind me of Philly fans and of Dan Snyder who will pull the plug on anyone the first chance they can get. You should be ashamed of yourselves for posting so absolute garbage for the public to read.

I agree.

I was about to write some angry things about Campbell before realizing that it’s the 1st game of the season.

We didn’t play well. We’ll need to play a lot worse before I get crazy.

Unfair?

Jason hasn’t showed the ability to map the play after the call. That walk up to center is his read. It should be natural. No NFL quarterback has time to think after the ball is snapped. He better already know what is and isn’t open.

Jason, spends way too much time looking around and waiting for Santana to get open. DUMP IT OFF TO PORTIS!!!.

by alocowboy on Sep 5, 2008 12:40 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Really

If the worst thing you can say is that when his receiver isn’t open, he should dump it to Portis, no big deal. Newsflash: they’re rarely open.

It's the same old

The offense is shit.
The defense is shit.
We go through this every year. Crappy clock management as mentioned by Madden. Five yard passes on 3rd and 15 resulting in no first down production.
Let me guess, the new coach even relied on the run game…yep! We have another piece of shit defensive play (JT) playing with a bummed knee and was targeted the entire game. Another shit draft with guys that are barely conditioned to take the field. Probably about 35% of the team are in theire mid-thirties.

Bottom line: it doesn’t matter which quarterback you put in!

by clp5150 on Sep 4, 2008 11:49 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I thought the defense

was somewhere above shit, though barely. I can live with 16 points.

I thought the offense was very shit.

There is definite reason for concern at this point. I’m not breaking things over my head yet but, there’s a lot of night left.

manning is still terrible

I just love how the commentators were still kissing his ass, even with a 61.1 passer rating. I shouldnt say anything though, at least he put his team in a position to win…

by hibachi on Sep 4, 2008 11:57 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I raised the point

the other day that his numbers regressed from 2006 to 2007. You win a Super Bowl and everyone forgets that, but I’m mostly certain that Eli Manning has revealed himself. He’s a good, not great, quarterback.

Having said that, Tom Coughlin found a way to win an SB with Manning and that’s all anyone cares about. There is no “Skin Patrol thinks you’re Great not Good” trophy. There is a Lombardi trophy.

My issue with the 2006 GWilliams defense was that we didn’t pressure the QB enough, that we played our cover 2 and hoped for a front four rush that never came and became a bend and break defense. Coach Blache is more conservative than Williams and blitzes less. We either do or do not have the personnel to develop a consistent pass rush with 4-5 guys. We’ll find out this season.

Manning isn’t a great quarterback and I’m still not sold on him being a good one either. He played spectacularly during their Superbowl run but he was sub par during the regular season. I simply can’t stand how people even dare compare him to Peyton just because they have an equal number of rings…

by hibachi on Sep 5, 2008 12:14 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

passer rating

is a bad metric to evaluate or compare someone. if you knew how it was calculated you would laugh. Check this out for more info. you would still rather have manning than most starters in the league this year.

And as for JC, who are you gonna bench him for? there’s no viable option that is truly better. So let’s all try to remain calm after one game and give him some time in another new offense,

by DC Pain on Sep 6, 2008 2:53 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I've always felt

Mark Brunell was the best argument against passer rating. Couple years ago he had a great rating as he was completing a lot of passes and wasn’t throwing away the ball, but his passes were dispraportionately at or behind the line of scrimmage and the offense wasn’t moving. A 7 yard pass on 3rd and 13 isn’t a good play at all, though it doesn’t hurt your passer rating.

Right

As an outsider, if I had to lay blame, it would be on Danny for “helping” his franchise QB by bringing in yet another OC with another scheme. It’s just very, very un-smart.

That said, it’s the surprise that’s surprising. Everyone should have expected offensive mediocrity until the team really understands the system. It’s inevitable. The Redskins will improve. It’s unfortunate for fans because it’ll suck until then, but there’s a lot of talent on the team and over time they’ll put it together.

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig loves it.

Overall, Most Fans expected...

The Season as expected by most fans is for 8-8 up or down a couple, you’ve got expected the team to get better but everyone expects the team to lose, it was a loss for an average team.

by dr WNC on Sep 6, 2008 12:14 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Everyone expected the offense to be shit, lets face it. Im not too worried about that and I think they’ll be able to improve it as the season moves. The one thing that really gets me nervous was the run defense and to a lesser extent, the pass defense. I’ll let the pass defense slide this week because we were without Springs, Rogers and Landry were rusty, and we did lose Smoot. What happened to the run defense though? The run defense that was number 4 in the league last year got mauled by brandon jacobs who averaged close to 6 ypc without breaking any really big ones. I was surprised that NY went away from him some in the second half because he was really just getting whatever he wanted.

the biggest concern for all redskins fans should be the play calling. you could tell it was a first time coach but i believe he’ll learn and i really hope snyder gives the poor guy a chance.

anyone should lose their job for losing to a division rival — SB champ — on the road. That happens.

Oh no, I wasnt talking about after just this game!

What I’m saying is that Zorn should get more than the 1 season trial usually given out by Dan Snyder.

Redskins defense isn't going to be good long enough for Jason to get it

It is time for Jason to go.

This team is too good to lose as we will against anybody with no offense.

Well

We might be too good to lose but if our defense isn’t going to be good enough and our starting quarterback doesn’t get it, I fail to see how we’re too good to lose.

while i disagree with you about it being jason’s time to go, who do you suggest we replace him with? Collins??? give me a break.

by hibachi on Sep 5, 2008 1:06 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Campbell

maybe Jason doesn’t know all his options… I’m sure he doesnt know the whole system and its kind of hard to not know who is going to be where. My problem with him is his lack of mobility…mobility isnt just physical its also a mindset. HE WONT MOVE. He is fast enough to move outside the pocket, and yet he just sits there like hes jared lorenzen. disgusts me

by gmgriffi489 on Sep 5, 2008 10:13 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Campbell's mobility

I’m not even worried about Campbell’s mobility. I’m worried about his memory! Did he forget that Cooley plays on the team? One pass to him ( a whopping 7 yarder) on 27 throws? Did Zorn know he had Cooley? I read an article earlier on the Washington Post that mentioned Cooley approached Zorn late after the game and brought up the fact he had caught only one pass. It didn’t elaborate much further…

So far, this is the worst defense against the pass that I can remember in some time if not ever!

pass defense

i wouldnt harp on the pass defense. i knew coming into the game that burress would be a problem. 10 catches for 133 or whatever he had is a little over the top, but i wasnt exactly surprised. springs is the only guy we have who has the ability to cover burress and he was out. rodgers clearly isnt ready physically, but we knew that already. landry also wasnt ready, but that shouldnt come as a surprise considering he missed all of preseason. given all of that, i would actually consider it a pretty decent performance by the defense. after the first giants, i would actually say that the defense was somewhat solid. they did get gashed against the run, but as someone else pointed out earlier, the giants werent able to break any really long ones, and in the end we gave up 16 points. to the super bowl champs on the road. that should be enough to win the game. i happen to think that if we had somehow won the game, people would have a much more positive view of the defense’s performance.

by joshp on Sep 5, 2008 12:53 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Defense

Of course we would have had a different opinion! BUT, when we have relied on the defense to carry us and win games for us, they did a terrible job! They need to be able to contain the opponent to the same amount of output and that’s the fault of the offense. In this case, the Giants could not have scored more than 7 points, but they did. Unfortunately, they have to contain the other teams to no more than we can score. We can’t score more than 7 points,so the defense must do the rest. I guess they suck by circumstance!

The D was hyped all of offseason that they would be back to a top ten. If they can’t defend the run nor have anyone that can defend against the pass, then they SUCK! That’s pretty much the A-B-C of defensive football. I’ll have to look for some stats on what the average of “points scored” for the Skins has been over the past 5 or so years. I bet it’s not much more than 16 points, if at all!

by clp5150 on Sep 5, 2008 4:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

defense

i dont know about you, but i didnt expect us to have an elite defense this year. in fact, all the years that we have had an ‘elite’ defense, we’ve sucked. in 04, we were 3rd in total defense and in 02 we were 5th. in 05 we were 9th and last year we were 8th. thats about what i expected, and thats about the performance we got on thursday. i dont think thats anything worth complaining about.

by joshp on Sep 8, 2008 12:04 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

DEFense

Well, I’ll remain skeptical and see how they play at home. The “D” has remained stable, I’ll give you that. I just hate to see people play with bummed knees to keep streaks alive, etc. Peter King stated that Taylor (since he claims he’s 90%) will definitely have the worst season of his career because he has no explosion whatsoever. Hopefully, they will at leat remain consistently solid.

Back to the original issue at hand: I saw Campbell on Redkins Nation last Friday and I loved the way he commented that “we” need to do this and “we” need to do that and “we” missed opportunities. When you watch Zorn comment it’s all about what “Jason” needs to do. I don’t know if Campbell is in denial or what.

Another sore spot (although I’ve yet to confirm this except word-of-mouth) is that I heard this type of West Coast Offense has no real play criteria that involves the TE’s. That being said, it explains why Cooley only had one pass last week and it causes anticipation of the worst performance year for Cooley (although no fault of his own).

by clp5150 on Sep 8, 2008 12:38 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They swear

Cooley was called on more plays but we either always got pressured or else had penalties on those plays. We’ll be able to square those assertions with reality after a few more games. If Chris Cooley isn’t catching more than 1 pass per game by mid-season, I’m going to throw myself off something.

Go register. Or else.
