Jason Taylor is a Redskin
[Note by Skin Patrol, 07/21/08 7:48 AM EDT ] Let this be the Training Camp open thread of the day, as I'll be in mediation until this evening, most likely.
Poor timing as I don't really have time to comment, but per Redskins Insider:
Vinny Cerrato just announced the Skins acquired Pro Bowl DE Jason Taylor from Miami for a second round pick in 2009 and a sixth-round pick in 2010.
The Skins assume the final two years of Taylor's contract as is, Cerrato said, with no re-negotiation (Washington had about $8 million in cap space prior to the trade, Cerrato said). Taylor has talked about playing just one more season before leaving the NFL for acting/Hollywood options, but Cerrato, Washington's executive VP of football operations, said, "I'm 100 percent confident he'll play more than one year.".
Is it or isn't it overspending? Much of that will depend on how Jason Taylor plays this coming season, but if this story is true I welcome him to the team with open arms given the great need we have on the defensive line after the Daniels injury.
More tomorrow.

I'm a little suprised
It’s not a bad deal, and as you state depending on how he plays the deal can get better.
2 picks, 2009 an 2010. I have wondered if the Redskins will get a comp pick in 2009 for Sean Taylor, it should be the highest comp pick ever if they do get one.

I think the Daniels injury...
made this more of a need-based trade than it might have been otherwise.
He (as of last season) is still a top-tier DE, especially rushing the passer. The Redskins needed a pass rush. What they gave up (a 2nd, a 6th and cap space) isn’t that much.
If he stays healthy and plays up to his capabilities, he’ll make the Redskins defense instantly better.
The biggest question now is whether or not he’ll actually retire after this season.
Yes, I am a nerd.

Daniels did make it more of a must have for Washington but
Taylor to the redskins
A month ago when this site discussed the possibility, almost everyone was ok on getting Taylor with a 2nd round pick.
The Washington Redskins went out and got Taylor with a second round pick plus a late rounder in 2010. I’m suprised Washington got him for so little considering the position the skins were in with Daniels situation, and Buzzbee.

I think the Redskins got a steal.
Toylor is only two seasons removed from being the defensive player of the year. As a Miami fan I couldn’t be more frustrated with this deal but as an Oklahoma Sooner fan I’m glad I’ve got another player to follow in the D.C. area along with Malcolm Kelly.

Andre Carter & Jason Taylor
could they become Dexter Manely & Chrles Mann 2.0?

Ho Na!
This sets up a nice cushy comeback atmosphere for Erasmus. It was already that way with Daniels and Washington, but now with the pass rushing combo we got there won’t be a need to plug him into third downs save to keep legs fresh. Plus, he’ll be playing under two great mentors in AC and Taylor. It opens the potential for Erasmus to step up into Taylor’s role when Taylor goes to Hollywood. If so, then we dropped a second and a seventh in next years draft for a pro bowl pass rusher this year and a (potential) pro bowler for the next decade or so. While it’s unlikely to happen that way, setting up one’s pieces like this seems like a pretty good strategy to me.
This also pretty much guarantees Washington won’t be subbing in on third downs. Despite his skillz at passrushing there won’t be any need. That’ll help him stay injury free (sans the freaky deaky kind of injuries, such as the two that happened today), which is a huge boon to our D.
After our long pass rusher void, we ended up with the best in the business. Regardless of the long term cost, it’ll be great to see our D-line this year. I’m real interested in how much an improved rush will impact our secondary. It may be that our dearth of interceptions will come to welcome end. Lets hope Taylor has a long, healthy and sack happy career as a skin.
TTB!

Good call
on Taylor as a mentor. Couldn’t have found a better guy to tutor Wilson and James.

It doesnt matter how much we paid for him...
regardless of how long Jason Taylor plays or whether he’s as productive as he was in the past, this was a necessary trade by the skins and they had no choice but to make it

Possible?
That a team can get better by losing their starting DE? I feel bad for Daniels but imagine the rush we can generate with Carter & Taylor!

JT Trade
2 season ending injuries in the first day? Kinda bogus if you ask me…. its called warm up people. However the Taylor trade looks to be good for us. If anything we will have someone who is light on their feet. I watched a video about the trade on Comcast Sportsnet and I can’t believe how "easy" this trade was. A few back and forths with Parcells and poof… JT. Take a look for yourself…http://comcastsportsnet.tv/common/global_flash/player/spe.swf?flv=vidcast_1302&sid=102&d=comcastsportsnet.tv

I don’t think it was ever hard. Parcells set a price on Taylor before the draft and never budged. It seems like half the teams in the league were offering him one thing or another but he stood firm. All anyone ever had to do to get Jason Taylor is offer the second round pick.

We do have questions about conditioning but....
Conditioning will do nothing for you when a 300 pound lineman rolls up on your leg

Didnt he say
that he was in the best shape of his life following Dancing With the Stars? I’ve heard a lot about how ballet and dancing can help athletes with technique, especially in football.
I’ll go out on a limb and say his numbers will improve this year, around 13 sacks. I’m thrilled with this deal. As much as I love what Daniels brings to this team, there is no doubt that Jason Taylor is a major upgrade. He is still going to command a double team, which should enable Andre Carter to go wild. Our defense is scary.
I must admit I was worried about not adding depth to our D-line this off-season. I loved our draft even though it centered on offense. Keep in mind that Campbell did not get a full offseason with Santana last year, so they should be more in sync this year. Our problems on offense (injuries aside) appear to be solved. Look at what we have to play with in the red zone this year. Portis, Sellers, Cooley, Davis, Kelly, and Thomas. Moss and Randle El aren’t bad options either.
Special teams is going to get better. I’m actually excited to see Durant Brooks play. I can’t wait to have a rough series, 3 and out on our own 15. Things look bleak, in comes Durant Brooks with a 70 yard bomb. Massive hang time calls for a fair catch. In comes to Redskins D…Jason Taylor eats the QB’s lunch.
Adding Jason Taylor IMO gives us 2 more wins this year. Can’t wait for the season to start!!

We drafted best available
but a big part of not drafting any D-linemen before the 7th round was due to prospects at that position being taken just before we picked. Trevor Laws to Philly (1 spot ahead) comes to mind and Phillip Merling (2 spots) to Miami are prospects the redskins were seriously considered by the ‘Skins.

The quality of our secondary ...
makes it easier for Taylor to get to the QB, in my opinion. Better chance for his stats to rise.

Anyone starting to see a relationship between Taylors and great Redskins players?

Breaking news of not much
Jason Taylor is wearing jersey No. 55. With Jason Taylor taking No. 55, that means linebacker Rian Wallace needs a new number.
Wallace is wearing jersey No. 57 now. Get your Wallace Taylor gear!
