Speaking of DEs, Redskins Sign Seventh-Round Pick Jackson
[Note by Skin Patrol, 06/24/08 7:28 PM EDT ] Promoted, edited slightly.
From the Offical Site:
The Redskins have signed rookie defensive end Rob Jackson, the team announced on Tuesday. Jackson was the Redskins' seventh-round draft pick (242nd overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft.
To make room for Jackson on the roster, the Redskins released defensive tackle J.T. Mapu
That makes four of their ten selections in the 2008 NFL Draft signed, with just a little under a month until training camp begins. Nice start and it will be interesting to see how the rest of the rookie signings go. What order will our offensive heavy 2nd rounders go? Will it be a difficult contract negations for Colt Brennan, what with him being a highly touted QB that fell due to injury? Finally when will this team commit to my man Durrant Brooks!? As always remember every pick the Redskins sign, someone on the roster will have to be cut, and that should be interesting to see who gets the ax.
[Note by Skin Patrol, 06/24/08 7:29 PM EDT ] Regarding this last point, I find myself reading slowly, deliberately, and cautiously whenever we sign someone, for fear that Pete Schmitt will get cut. Saying that was an excuse to tag his name to this post.

Colt
will sign without much ado. He knows he got lucky. Plus, he’s my adoptee. If he doesn’t sign easily I’ll noogy the six three two hundred twenty pound rook until he cries “uncle!” (or I’ll write about noogying him, which is much safer and therefore a better idea for Yours Truly).
I’m a little bummed about Mapu getting released. I have a special place in my heart for Samoans (I’m not even sure he’s Samoan, but with a name like Mapu, he better be from somewhere in the Pacific), but then our D-Line was getting a bit crowded out by the unproven.
Anyone know how making the team and signings work? I know it makes me sound like a foo (in the “I pity the foo” Mr. T sense), but assuming Mr. Horton or Mr. Jackson fail to make the team, do they still take the cap space as per the signing bonus terms of their contract? Or are rookie contracts dependent upon the rook actually earning a roster spot before their cap hit is counted against a team?

I agree.
Whatever Colt thinks about his own worth, the market will only bear 6th round money, and he’s not going to sit out of camp.
If they get cut they will get their signing bonus, which is probably around 50K and they have in hand, anyways. While signing rookies is a sign that they are impressing the coaches, it by no means guarantees them a spot on the roster. There are few financial disincentives to cutting Jackson, even if he has a contract in hand.

What I was really getting after
was whether or not the signing bonus still counts against the cap after they get cut. Now that I write it, I see that the answer is obviously yes (unless of course it’s no, which wouldn’t totally surprise me, but which would make my “obviously” comment seem a bit “foo” ish).

actually the answer is sorta
For the off-season only the teams top 51 player salaries count.
No, I’m not an expert but have a great link on the Salary Cap
“
The “Team Salary” falls under the Salary Cap. Team salary includes the amount a team must pay its current or former players under their player contracts. Notice emphasis on the word PLAYERS. The salary cap does not apply to coaches, assistants, trainers, and other personnel. Only the top 51 player salaries for a team count against the salary cap in the offseason. During the season, all player salaries count toward the salary cap

Ahh Sooo!
That just proves the point that it wasn’t just Ivy League schools that created football, but specifically their law programs. Only lawyers would make a salary cap and then mangle the easily grasped concept of “salary” by using it as a term of art.

Gracias, brother.
That makes sense.
I thought the normal rules would apply, where cut players have their guaranteed money accelerated.
