Erasmus James is a Redskin
I had a feeling we'd go after this guy. I guess the pros outweigh the cons here...he's got big upside (I think. Has anyone actually seen him play since 2005?), Palermo coached him at Wisco, and he was cheap. 7th round conditional in 2009 cheap. He's still relatively young (26) and we've got depth issues on the D-Line.
But will he ever play again? He's clearly not in football shape now, Minnesota told him he would be cut 4 days ago after he failed a physical. I don't like bringing guys like this on board because he'll immediately demand more attention from the training staff then his performance warrants (I'm not talking about potential).
Good move?

That's what happends when you say it's a slow news day dr WNC ha ha
From what I read we traded for him, conditional seventh-round pick in the 2009 draft to Minnesota this sounds like a great get. I’m all for bringing in talent for next to nothing especially when said possible talent has something to prove.

He has to make the roster for the Vikes to get the pick.
The more I think about it, the more I’m leaning towards it being a good move. No real risk other than having some dead weight around the locker room if he doesn’t get back into shape.
This could turn out to be huge.
Please go away Justin Speier. Your work here is done. And take Quinlan's half-inch fielding radius with you.

If this pans out....
Allow me to be the first to give early props to Vinny for being proactive. According to John Clayton:
Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerato called Vikings coach Brad Childress Tuesday and convinced him to trade James instead of releasing him….
Grabbing the bull by the horns, I like it. He probably wouldn’t have made his way to us via our number 20 position on the waiver wire.
Over the weekend several teams made inquiries to James’ agents about putting in a waiver claim on the injured defensive end.

I guess we have to have faith
in Palermo’s opinion of James. It had to have been Palermo who went to bat with Vinny to get this guy, and hopefully he’ll know enough about the player to limit the amount of coaching neediness he takes up.
We didn’t lose anything, but this guy is no lock to make the roster, either. Then again, 7th rounders rarely are.
Thanks for the FanPost ReggieBullits, and the heads up on Erasmus.

i love it
we got a first round pick for a seventh round. if he can play at the level he is capable of that made him a first rounder, we got ourselves one hell of a deal.

I thought the trade was not final until
Reading the Redskins traded for EJ, while a very worth while attempt at strengthing the Defensive line, had to require a player to be released. The player is one Dorian Smith.
It would suprise me if we were to read about any of the Draft picks being signed until just before camp, with the “rules” as written the Redskins can only carry 80 signed players on the roster. While every signing is met with big news, every fan should be expecting the “who is released to open up a spot” especially the Adopt-A-Player fans.
