First word comes from David Elfin at Redskins 360. Word is that Jason Taylor hasn't shown much interest in showing up at the Dolphins voluntary meetings and now a war of words is brewing between the franchise and the player. Who knows how it plays out? In any event, David Elfin suggests that Taylor may be coming to the Redskins, citing a good relationship between Taylor's agent (Gary Wichard) and Vinny Cerrato. Stay tuned.

Taylor's value

Can’t be very high. They can’t expect too much in return from him at this point can they?

What would it take to get him to Washington?

I can’t say that I would mind having Jason Taylor here at all. With whatever Dan Snyder is doing in the entertainment biz with Tom Cruise and what not, it seems like a perfect fit.

It doesn’t hurt that we desperately need a pass rusher and failed to address that need in the draft. I’m not worried about all the Dancing With the Stars drama. I’m pretty sure he will come in and put up double digit sacks. Strahan didn’t seem to have a problem last year. Plus, Taylor says he is in better shape than when he won DPOY.

A little dancing never hurt anyone. If we can get him with minimal damage being done to our picks next year, go for it.

I agree with you on the shape issue

Guy is 34 years old, has played in this league at the elite level for a long time, I really don’t question whether he is in shape or not.

I do think the Dolphins will have a pretty hefty price for him and I think he’ll cost more than a 34 year old player should, even granting how good Taylor is.

I’ll take him at minimum damage, as you said, but am skeptical that we can do so.

Go register. Or else.

Price

I’m stronly opposed to trading anything above a 2nd round pick for him and or some insane about of contract offer. To me the smart move would be to sign him at the last second just before the season starts b/c the ‘Fins will be under the gun to dump him for something cheaper…then again they could go the route of the Bengals owner and tell everyone to drop dead and that they’re not trading him no matter what.

Just as long as they don’t brak the bank for a 34 year old D-lineman.

I think waiting

is the best strategy for now but am deeply skeptical that we can get him for equal to or less than one 2nd round pick.

But

All of the reports make it sound like Miami has severed ties with him. If that is true, and they are telling that they don’t want Jason Taylor part of that team, wouldn’t that automatically reduce his value?

I’m asking this because I was thinking a 2nd day pick for him. I would do a 2nd though. Keep in mind, this guy was defensive player of the year two years ago. He was on an embarrassing Dolphins team. I have to think his production would go up on a team like this. We win, we have tons of money, we have a laid back coach, we have a starting spot begging for a play maker. Seems like he would want to be here.

I don’t see Jim Zorn getting upset if he wants to go Hollywood and play football at the same time. From what I’ve seen, he’d probably be all for it. I’m sure he has already figured out how competitive dancing improves technique along the defensive line. I doubt Blatche would get in a bind having an all-pro on the line either.

re:

I would trade a 2nd round pick for Taylor. I would definitely, without question, trade a 2nd day draft pick for Taylor.

The media reports to me, though, sound like the predictable and normal back and forth for a franchise that wants a player to show up and a player who doesn’t want to. I don’t buy for a second that the Dolphins are ready to part ways with Taylor for a 2nd round pick or lower (though I hope I’m wrong!) simply because they’re upset with him for missing voluntary meetings. I wouldn’t expect any less from the Dolphins, especially with Bill Parcells playing a large role in the organization. That’s his operating procedure.

I think a lot of things drop his value, notably his age, but also his inability to make it to voluntary camps. But as you said, we’re talking about a former defensive player of the year who is going to cost the Dolphins some 16.5M (per Redskins 360) to accelerate in a trade. When I think of his value dropping, I think of it dropping from a 1st and a 2nd rounder to a 1st and a 5th rounder.

But who knows? Taylor’s value is whatever the market will bear. But a lot of teams have need for a defensive linemen of Taylor’s caliber.

If we can get him on the cheap, I say pull the trigger. I’m just a cynic by nature.

Go register. Or else.

A Second Round Pick

Would be a no brainer as far as I’m concerned. Even a first round pick would be fine with me. If he can garner 11 sacks and 16 starts at 32 years old on a team that flat out sucked, it is fun to imagine what he could do opposite Carter with Daniels rushing the middle, even two or three years down road. Much more than a first would be hard medicine though, and in the unlikely event that our O tanks under Z-man and we earn ourselves a top 10 pick in the next draft, even that first round pick would be too much.

Either way, if Carter or Daniels go down for a prolonged period of time we are in for a rocky ride, especially in the event that our already thin LB corps gets depleted. While Evans and Wilson played better than expected last season, their ability to stuff the run is questionable due to their smallish size. If Washington goes down Khary Campbell is going to be a sitting duck behind the D-line for power running plays (I’ll give some credit to the possibility that the Hamburgler could step up, but I’m not sold on him as an OLB just yet). We’ll be wishing we had someone like Randall Godfry who could be counted on to step up in a pinch.

Adding JT to our D line would erase any anxiety I have about our defense and its depth all across the board. It would also give Washington a break on passing downs and allow him to focus on being on OLB, and would help him in his goal of having this year be injury free. Tangentially, we have a nice cushion of cap space that’s been set aside for the dream of an expensive Bengal with sure hands and a 1970s birthday. It would be fitting that the cash be put into the D-line, as that dream is (happily) dust in the wind. In terms of chemistry, he’d be a perfect fit in the over 30’s gentleman’s club that the Skins have developed on both sides of the line. Experience counts, as Ole’ Joe would (probably) have said. Lastly, and most importantly, JT could teach the rest our new receivers some great endzone dance moves.

Here's another take on my alleged no brainer

From the Washington Post:

As one NFL executive put it:

“Blache is not a guy who is infatuated with stats and sacks. There’s a lot of other things you need to be able to do to play for him, and at this stage of his career can Jason Taylor give you those things for 65-70 snaps a game for 16 games? No, he can’t, and he’s a guy making $8 million a year.

“That’s a team that says now that they are building through the draft and you have to take them at their word there, and after over-spending for so long that now they may be taking a different approach. You can’t just build a team one way; there has to be a balance between the pro side and the college side and you can’t be balanced if you’re always giving away first-day picks. In the first three rounds, you’ve got to think of those guys as starters. I can’t see too many teams offering those picks for Taylor. If I’m the Redskins I’m not making a move for the guy.”

La Confra also indicated that trading any first round pick for Taylor would be crazy, and that the fins have already rejected a fourth round offer for the dancing machine.

So much for my value scheme.

Wow

someone offered a fourth rounder… for a former defensive player of the year.

I think it will take a lot more to get him.

Go register. Or else.
