John Clayton Already Knows Who We're Drafting

Per the professor:

Redskins narrow choices: The Redskins seem to be making one last check before selecting Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly or Clemson defensive end Phillip Merling. A good portion of the Redskins' front office jumped on Dan Snyder's plane and visited both players Thursday. Kelly did some shuttle runs. They wanted to spend a little more time with Merling. It's pretty clear these are two of the Redskins finalists if they are available at No. 21 in the first round. The Redskins need a third receiver. They have also been looking for another pass-rusher.

Star-divide

Malcolm  Kelly worries me.  He screams 1st rd wideout bust. I heard about him throwing Oklahoma's athletic staff under the bus because he isn't very good at running 40yds with a purpose. The times he recorded don't worry me as much as his propensity to bitch and bring money up already when he's yet to run one frigging route on an NFL field. So I think we should stay away from that young man.

Words that go with Phillip Merling tend to be " Has non-stop motor, relentless in pursuit, and  plays with nasty demeanor. These are sweet ass sweet. However things like " wont scare anyone off the edge,  will get pushed back, and intelligence could be an issue" These are not sweet ass sweet things. He's projected as a DT in a 43 scheme, and going DT is what Vinny's been all about even though the consensiuus thinks we need another DE.

I read a lot of scouting reports and they all seem to either go against themselves in the "positive/negative" section or our completely different then ones on other sites.  I really don't know what to believe but am ecstatic that this thing is a day away!

More information

Rich Tandler over at Tandler’s blog, has similar information. My thoutght falls in line with it being one of these two, unless a suprise is dropped to #21

Phillip Merling will be the choice
IF an option to trade back occurs with the Redskins gaining an early 2nd round pick then the first selection will be Malcolm.
Where’s the information that the Redskins visited Jordy Nelson too. I’m hoping he’s slated for the 2nd round pick.

Looking forward to this actually occuring but we still over 24 hours away.

That's fine

but why can’t we move up a skosh in the 3rd and get him? I think we can get Jordy Nelson AND someone else in the 2nd round.

Go register. Or else.

Who we are drafting

A lot of interesting information and comments on the web about who the Redskins will draft, while, simultaneously, articles flying about the Skins pursuit of an accomplished WR.

I am not big on trading big $ and draft choices for an existing WR, unless it is a younger one, in his mid-20’s and a lot cheaper than the reported Johnson trade. To go for Johnson for $21 mil, 1st rnd and other pick(s) is a move that will more likely hurt us then help us in the long run. I still think that there are some very decent WR and linemen prosprects that can be found in round 2 or even 3.

If we stay at 21, and Kenny Phillips is available, take him! I doubt DT, DE or Ot of outstanding +’s vs significant -’s will be available at 21. If a #1 or possibly #2 top rated player, for almost any position is available at 21 take him. If not, try to trade down.

That said, I have seen enough drafts that we just don’t know and depending upon when a run on a certain position occurs, an otherwise top 10 could conceivably fall way down in this dratf.

And, I would almost love to see someone who could plot out over the past decade the number of successes versus bust for rounds 1 thru 4. I suspect that we would be surprised, despite all the effort and analysis, there is a lot of luck involved – analagous to someone throwing darts at the stock listing vs pro stock picks and which one outperforms!

Very good comment

you have earned one Shrute Buck

i couldn’t agree more on your view of trading for CJ and the importance of the draft. I disagree with your wanting to select Kenny Phillips with our first pick though. I don’t believe any S in this draft warrants a 1st rd pick. I’m a Doughty supporter and think he can do the job or at least deserves a longer look. We do need to draft a S at some point though due to lack of depth
