Cincy says no to 'Skins Trade Offer
How serious are the Cincinnati Bengals about not giving in to Chad Johnson's trade demands?
<!-- INLINE HEADSHOT (BEGIN) -->
Serious enough to swat away an offer from the Washington Redskins that could have netted the Bengals two first-round draft picks, team and league sources said.
The Redskins offered its first-round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third-rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if Johnson and the Redskins hit certain performance levels, the sources said.
It was not the first time the Redskins approached the Bengals about a deal, but it was the first significant proposal.
The fact that this even went down really pisses me off. I continue to be amazed at how little the Redskins value the draft. Chad Johnson is an amazing talent but to keep fleecing our picks away is fucking annoying. I'll be very interested to see what the Redaskin Insider has to say about this. I understand the rational, that he's a proven talent so no risk per say in the trade. Maybe Chad just wants to win, if you get him some good teammates and give him the POSSIBILITY of winning, he'll shut up and play nice.
My initial reaction though is I’m not happy about this & continue to believe in building with the draft. Is anyone else against us trading? Or should we welcome it because there's no talent in this year’s first round? I still have the horrific taste of the many mega free agent busts in my mouth.

My opinion put more clearly
The Skins need to build through the draft, ride out these big salaries, build quality depth and lower their overall salary cap number. Basically the Skins need to get fiscally responsible so they can give Zorn a clean slate.
I love Chad Johnson and I think he is an excellent WR who is dedicated to the game despite his antics but the Skins do not need another massive salary at this point.
or
Giving up a the 21st pick this year and a 3rd rounder next year is not stupid. If the 3rd round pick becomes a 1st, than it probably means the team and CJ had great years, which would result in another low 1st rounder, still worth it to me.
Basically my left & right brain are arguing with eachother and I can’t come to a happy medium.

Well..
As a Cowboy fan I too am torn. I mean I would love for the redskins to trade away a first round pick this year and possibly a first next BUT with the way our secondary is I would hate to go against Ocho Cinco twice a year.
Its my Money, And I want it NOW!

Or, are we not clearly thinking
To me this is a good offer, looking at the raw data.
The number 21 pick this year, a year where everyone has talked about possibly using this pick on a WR. OK, so give it to Cinci and the Redskins still have what 8 picks in the Draft this year where the Goal of the redskins is to build depth as ALL 22 STARTERS are RETURNING.
Add a third round pick in 2009, which can move to a first if performance metrics are met…duh?
All around this is a great deal, and a great reasonable offer…Now, Can the Redskins show restraint with Cinci turning it away to not up the ante, if this was considered “the best offer”

Need to consider cost as well
as you aren’t just getting Chad Johnson, but whatever contract Chad Johnson wants. Remember that the team already has a huge amount of money sunk in its wide receivers, as Santana Moss and ARE both have very lucrative contracts. There is a finite amount of money to spend, and I question generally the idea of spending that much at WR. Throw in the consideration that we’d lose two 1st round draft picks, and I can’t get on board behind this trade.

I don't know about two 1st round picks,
but I have absolutely NO PROBLEM WHATSOEVER with the ‘Skins trading away one 1st round pick for Chad Johnson. One of our areas of concern is wideout, but WRs are NOTORIOUSLY hard to draft successfully.
Any other position, and I wouldn’t be so amenable.

I'd certainly
be more amenable to the idea if it were solely a first round draft pick. Unfortunately, as the Bengals have made clear by rejecting the offer (if they in fact did so) then we will not be capable of getting Johnson for merely a 1st round draft pick.

I tried to make that point
but my lack of typing/formatting skills ruined that. Overall I agree with your standpoint on this issue, but he’s 30 and how will signing him effect our cap?
It looks like his addition could make our offence explode, but past signings for the most part have failed.

Chad Johnson
Look at the needs on this team, especially along both lines (age and injuries). Look at the cornerback and safety situation (age and injuries). Look at the depth in this draft of wide receivers. Why then spend 21 million on a 30 year old receiver – although an excellent receiver – and give up at least two draft picks?
I truly hope that this is more of feint strategy then it is a real all out push. That said, the Redskins have consistently expressed desire (possible tampering issues afoot?) in getting Johnson.
I just think that you can find some good WR’s in this draft who can be around for several years. Johnson may have 2 to 3 years left before age starts to take its toll. Is this worth 21 million, at least one first round draft pick, a salary cap issue for at least two years?
ARRGGHHHHH! I would rather the Redskins trade up and give up a couple of later draft picks, etc and pick the first or second best DL, OL or WR on the board than get Johnson. I am thinking LONG TERM.

More generally...
with the amount we’re already paying Moss and ARE, we’d be tieing a HUGE amount of resources into one position that isn’t even really used on many/most plays.

WR costs
WR are costing money: Look at all the contracts that have been paid to the top WR this year. No one would doubt Chad Johnson is still a top WR.
Looking at 2005, 2006 and 2007 first round WR picks the precentage of top performing players is very low, with a lot of busts. If pick 21 is used on a WR, the chances are very slim the player will be an elite WR.
Recommended the post for the Capt!

Once a post get
6 recommendations it becomes a Recommended Fan Post and stays up longer, I believe.

So we will never
Have a Recommended Fan Post as only 7 people read this sight, the author can’t recommend which leaves 6, who’ll never all agree.

It could be worse
I’d rather have7 loyal, intelligent fans who post, rather then 352 fans that post a bunch of incoherent bullshit like on some other sbnation sites…(cough) Blogging the Boys
