Kiper's Mega-Mock (happens to agree in part with this space)
[Note by Skin Patrol, 04/22/08 1:06 PM EDT ] Promoted because Mel Kiper picked Chilo Rachal in the 2nd round... and so did we. Good move on TexSkins part in making that selection. For the record, we got a fine review from Mocking The Draft for this pick. Enjoy and thanks to Cpt for the diary, edited only slightly
Per ESPN's insider of whom I'm a founding member, Mel Kiper hosted a Cosco sized mock draft complete with a complementary jar of mayonnaise large enough to share with you future grandchildren.
1. Phillip Merling, DE Clemson
2. Chilo Rachal, G USC
3. Tyvon Branch, CB Connecticut
4. 3a Josh Morgan, WR Virginia Tech
As you can see loves him some Chilo like we do. Their scouting reports can be found here, here, here, & here
I don't always agree with the Mel, I consider myself more of a Todd McShay follower when it comes to mocking and the like. The way Mel's mock went I don't have a problem with it except the Josh Morgan selection.
Thoughts?
[Note by Skin Patrol, 04/22/08 1:27 PM EDT ] Another note, sorry to bug you. More Mel Kiper Redskins analysis:
“The draft is the best way to go from a salary cap standpoint and it’s like having a good minor league system in baseball. You better know that the draft is your bread and butter. Look at the Redskins. They went the route of free agency. Did it help them? Did they win any Super Bowls going that route? No. Now they’re back to the draft. Why? For a reason -- because it didn’t work doing it the other way. They tried three different years of free agency, none of which worked. Now they’re back with nine picks, doing what they do best. The draft is pivotal. Where would the Patriots be without the draft? Where would the Giants have been without the draft last year? … I think people see now that free agency is secondary to the draft. … For me it’s all about motivation. Where do you get your motivated workforce from? It’s not free agency.”

Those picks certainly fill some needs.
Branch is an interesting name I haven’t heard connected to the Skins before.
I don’t have time right now, but I’d have to go look at the whole thing to see who was available when. I obviously like the Rachal pick, but I’m not sure about Merling.
Phear T.S.'s Crawdaddies...
Kiper's picks
I actually like each of his picks. Football games are won in the trenches. The Redskins need a better pass rush. Merling can play both tackle and end. With Rogers out for 1/2 season, Fred Smoot getting old, Shawn Springs getting old and our defense puts it corners out on an island, a defensive t or e is strongly needed.
A good o-lineman or receiver can be found in second round.
I have watched Josh Morgan, due to Va Tech’s anemic passing play book and having 4 senior receivers, he got little opportunity. But when things were on the line, he really stepped up his level of play.
Do NOT spend money and draft picks on Johnson! Please DON’T!!!!
mel
is drinkin the kool-aid. i don’t believe for one second that danny boy and vinny have changed their ways, as evidenced by the rumored and ridiculous offer for Johnson. And the fact that they’d offer him $20 mill guaranteed. Yeah let’s give up possibly two first rounders for an old, slightly overrated receiver who costs too much, has a 70% chance of making our offense better and a 95% chance of ruining our chemistry within the next 2 years when we don’t win and don’t get him the ball enough.
But I watched Morgan at Tech, and i’m not so sure he has much of a future in the NFL. He never really did much of anything to prove that he has the strength and/or speed to be effective in the league. But what do I know
