Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

I need your help

Around this time last year I directed your attention to ESPN's Fan Satisfaction Rankings. As you probably know, Redskins fans lacked satisfaction with their franchise.

This year ESPN is taking it a step further by including thoughts from the interwebs. Fans will now have more than merely a survey voice as you could very well be speaking for Redskins fans at ESPN. Specifically they're trying to explain the results from last year, notably our dead last Affordability ranking, low stadium ranking, etc.

ESPN is also looking for gameday experiences or thoughts from fans that personify what it means to be a Redskin fan at FedEx Field. Never having had the pleasure of attending a game there, I'm not an especially attractive candidate for comment. But some of you might and the idea of a Hogs Haven reader getting their thoughts posted next to the team somewhere at ESPN was too good to pass up.

So please, please, please post your thoughts below on the overall gameday experience at FedEx field or any other random thoughts you have on the Redskins Fan Satisfaction rankings. I will make sure to forward those thoughts on to the right person at ESPN and hopefully you guys will get credited with speaking on behalf of Redskins fan nation. In other words:

This year we are trying to get comments from fan sites to go along with our summaries and data...

[They want] your opinion in brief on why the Redskins garnered some of these results from the fans, along with some lesser known details regarding the Redskins gameday experience that are cool/funny and or interesting - what it's like to be a 'Skins fan, especially when you're at the stadium.

I appreciate it. HTTR

Your not going to like what I have to say
Where to start:

I've been to 14 games at FedEx and this is what I've taken from it.

Tickets: Sold out until 2076 or until I run into the Terminator and tell him to knock it the fuck off. You would think this would result into an awesome homefield advantage, but it doesn't and here's why. The only tickets availible to buy our via eBay,stubhub, etc. All of these our 150% over face value, making it very hard for the REAL FANS to attend a game. I personally bought '06 season "nosebleed" tickets from some rich lawyer..who owned 4 OTHER PAIRS of season tickets, and of course these were not face value. People like him and they're a more then you think have a stanglehold on them. I went to every game of the'06 season and guess what, there was a diffrent person to my left and right everytime. Also just b/c it's a sold out place doesn't mean it gets filled up. I know part of that is b/c you need to field a winner, but also that prices, etc have a strong effect.

Concessions:
Nothing notable here, but came up with the standard
ballpark dreck and that's it. Again the eye-popping prices - $5 for a hot dog, $6 for fries, $7
for a beer. For thoese prices something to make the place stand out, but its not there. Anything special is reserved for the super rich and I will harp on that later..

..later is now. Anything special (special tent they have, pre/postgame club, eateries)are resevered for people that are giving clients "wow me tours" Those prices are reserved for the super rich and NASA (b/c the prices are so high..cricket, cricket..i'll be here all week)If not they're available for ur purchase via ebay at the reasonable cost of yuor soul.

Game Experience:
There are so many commercials/promotions going over the jumbo-tron that it wont allow sometimes for a homfield advantage. I tried coutless times to start a "defence" chant only to be tuned out by a redskins.com commercial.

I think everyone should expeirance a live game but w/ high prices for tickets of all sorts, food, transportation, it's more fun to chill w/ bro's in front of a nice HD TV beer in hand (under $7) and bathroom a ft away. The roar of the crowd is awesome and I love gamday at the FedEx but I cant sell all my organs to go to a game.

I hope no one thinks I'm a hater of the Skins..I love 'em but I spit the truth.

The way the stadium is set up...
makes for much less crowd noise than the smaller RFK.  It seems like instead of filtering down on the field, the noise filters up and out of the stadium.  If I wasn't told that there were 90,000 fans or whatever there, I wouldn't believe it.

The only game I've been to at FedEx was a game against the Eagles (it was a few years ago when the Eagles were still the class of the East and the Skins were less than stellar) and it seemed like there were almost as many Eagles fans there as Skins fans.  Maybe it was just thge section I sat in (behind one of the end zones) but there seemed to be so many Eagles fans.

That said, it wasn't filled.  It was a night game (I forget if it was a Sunday or Monday night) but towards the top of the stadium there were rows and rows of empty seats.

I've been to a bunch of stadiums (mostly baseball but quite a few for football) and it has to be one of my least favorite sites to watch a game.  I liked seeing the Skins play in RFK more than I did at FedEx, despite all of the "modern convenieces."  There's something about being in a stadium and feeling the energy as a fan (along with the freezing winds and the feeling that the stadium was actually moving... like in a non-engineered type of way) that makes for a better game, win or lose.
